Looking to change oil coolers Harley cooler needs help. Are there any members using the Ultra Cool oil coolers they seem to move more air than the Jagg oil coolers do but are they as good Jagg? all comments certainly welcome. Ride safe Fred

Dunno about looks...that is subjective. But we tested the Ultra-Cool & the Jagg several years ago, and the Jagg cooled better, by over 15 degrees in stop & go, and 10 degrees at highway speed. Both were better than the factory oil cooler.

This is the Jagg we tested-

You can see more photos and details on it HERE.

The Ultra-Cool we tested is NOT the one they are making now. The one now looks more like a radiator. Would be interesting to know what they say about how much better it works than their previous model.

Might be time for us to do some more testing. :)

I was comparing air flow and all the specs. offered between the two. Just because it sounds good looks good means it's good ya kno... Thank you for the response. It seems Ultra Cool has upgraded the line I will keep reading reviews also. Ride safe Fred

Good info. I'm curious Kevin, do you know if the 2017 M8's, like my Freewheeler, have a different/improved oil cooler over previous TC models, or are they the same old design?

The fan assisted oil cooler on the '17-'18 Freewheeler is larger and more effective than the OEM oil coolers on previous year Twin Cams.

Harley use to use the Jagg oil coolers as their factory OEM oil coolers, but then they went to a less expensive cooler that is not as effective as the Jagg. The internal design of an oil cooler has a major effect on how the oil flows and dissipates heat. The less expensive OEM coolers are not as good as the Jagg, inch for inch.

BUT, the oil coolers on the 17+ Freewheelers are larger, and that makes up for a lot.

On the 2018 M8 Softails, the oil cooler is even larger than the larger one on the Freewheelers.

A little bit off subject, but what a horrible place to locate that oil cooler.

I agree, much of the wind is blocked by the front tire, plus it is vulnerable to rock dings and getting plugged up. Surprisingly there are not too many failures.

BUT, that is where HD puts the OEM cooler, so lots of folks like to do it.

I prefer of the downtube, where there is much more wind, and less likelihood of dings and getting dirty/plugged up. They work much better there. But with lower fairings, the largest you can go is the 6 Row. Without lowers, you can go with a 10 row (with or without a fan assist).

I have a 6 row on my Tri-Glide...

...and a 10 row on my Softail...

Both of them much more in the wind than the low-mount HD style.

btw, Fred, on my 2011 Tri-Glide, I ran two oil coolers...one in the factory location, and a second one off the downtube. Something to consider...instead of spending $ and still only having one oil cooler...spend a little less $ and have two.

Interesting Kevin however I was looking for the fan assist you know getting trapped in traffic. I would not object to having two but I believe one should have a fan to assure cooler oil. Is there a fan assist available for a upgrade for OEM? travel safe Fred

If you have Wet Heads don't order. Their web site will state they have a Ultra-Cool to fit the Tri Glide. But at this time they do not. Reason I know, I ordered one for my 2016 Tri Glide, while trying install the bracket, it would not fit. Called the company and they confirm that it would not fit. They offer a refund and once I shipped it, back I received the refund within 24 hrs.

Supposedly they are making a bracket that will fit, but it is several months away.

Will the 6 Row Jagg Cooler fit with the Love Jugs installed?

If you call the owner of this site at CUT-SHOOT Customs he sells to site members Love Jugs at a very good price. Plus you help him stay in business and this site up and running.
That is where I got mine great person to deal with... just sayin... Fred

With your Love Jugs, don't think you really need a fan assist for the oil cooler. But, if you want one, since you have lower fairings, then the lowmount Jagg or Ultracool are the choices.

The 6 row will not work with a fan assist.

The only oil cooler that works with the Twin Cooled is the one at this LINK.

We designed it, and patented it a year or so ago.

I talked to Ultracool back in 2015 and they said they had one coming out soon...they still don't have it.

We spent a lot of time on this...because the Twin Cool motors (both the Twin Cam and the M8) have a real challenge with oil temps. They actually run HOTTER than the non- Twin Cooled.

The only other place we found to put an oil cooler on the Twin Cooled Trikes was under the body. And there is enough room there to put a 10 row, even a fan assisted 10 row. But the 6 row, right behind the lower fairing does such a good job that we never bothered to put it into production.

I have the Ultra-Cool, no complaints, seems like the oil temp gauge will stay lower for a longer time than with OEM cooler. I bought it used and the thermostat for the fans doesn't want to turn them on. I simply installed a manual switch. The little LED indicator light comes on when I turn on the fans. I haven't played with a thermometer, but I'm sure the oil is cooler with the UC than without. If I get in heavy traffic, the rumpety-rump idle kicks in just like before. The oil might be cooler, but the heads still get hot when no air is moving. DK's remote oil filter mount helps too. Considering the Mighty Mites, but I just can't seem to get past the way they look.

I run mine all the time

They do make a 50 degree difference on my oil temp

I'am going to buy the cooler and filter relocation kit from DK. I like the way they look and know of no one else who has done so much research before they came out with their kit. And they are the best folks I've dealt with in all my years of riding. Where HD puts their under sized OEM cooler ain't the dumbest thing I've seen them do but it's in the top ten.

If you re going buy their Ultra Cooler. I suggest you call them instead of ordering off their web site, just to make sure it is going to fit. I made the mistake of ordering off their web site and they don't have a Ultra Cooler for a 16 Tri with wet heads.
