Just got our computer back from having one of those "your computer is locked" viruses removed, but the screen doesn't 'go to sleep' like it used to. I've looked everywhere thru the control panel and can't find anything that makes my computer screen shut off after I'm finished using it. Am I lookin in the wrong place?

TIA, Phu Cat

If you are using Windows 10 you can click on the lower left icon, then look for settings then click on system, then your power sleep settings, adjust accordingly or you can click on the power app, you'll find three choices, shut down, restart, or sleep, if you use the second process for sleep it'll need to be done manually every time you are done on the computer. Shouldn't be much of a problem getting it reset. Hope that helps accomplish your original settings.

On the first option you'll be able to set your screen to shut off or to put the computer to sleep standby. I use the screen shut off after 30 minutes of idling and never put to sleep leaving it operational 24/7.

I'm using a MAC since Microsoft quit supporting Windows XP. I don't know about the newer versions, but I fired up the XP machine and found it under:

Control Panel>Display>Screen Saver
at the bottom, there is a button for POWER. Clicking on that brought up options to turn off the monitor, hard drive and go to standby.

You might post which version you have for someone else to help if this is no help.

I was advised to avoid Windows 10 so my guy installed Windows 7. Once I click control panel no where can I find "display". I've tried going directly thru "Monitor" and that doesn't help me get to display either. Somewhere, somehow I have to find a way to get to display to get to the necessary commands to get the screen to turn off I think. Thanks for those ideas, I'll just have to keep trying.

My wife installed Windows 10 just a few days ago. I know it gave her fits, but after she repaired several drivers, it is now working like a charm. The last windows we had is no longer supported, and sometime this month, Windows 10 will quit being free and they will charge some big price.

It's a racket.

If the above didn't work,

Try a Hard Reset. Contol, Alt, Delete keys at same time.

Good Luck

Thank you Catfish, that's exactly what I've been doing but the darned screen just won't go dark. My .357 otta fix that but that would be a little drastic I 'spose. There's gotta be another way. Gonna have to cave and call the guy that fixed this thing originally but he's on the road at the moment. Thanks again for trying.

I don't know how much you want to try and fix yourself, but media sharing seems to cause a problem with putting it to sleep. Here is another video if you choose another attempt at fixing.

That didn't do it either Catfish, but thanks again for trying. Called the guy that refurbish our computer last night and he was able to get into it from his home. He made several changes that were supposed to fix the problem but didn't. Am going to text him now.

The only thing that seems to be left is updating your drivers, especially your graphics card drivers. Good Luck, wish I could have been more help.
