Traveling with a dog

I need some tips on traveling with a dog from people who have experience.

We have a 6 lb. shih-poo. I have taken her on one ride in a dog crate secured to the backseat. We had the crate covered up as much as possible to protect her from the wind.

She didn't seem to be any worse for wear, but it was only a couple of hours between stops.

I've ordered some doggles for her eyes. I have a cooling vest for her and a cooling mat on order. I don't foresee much riding when it is too cold for her, but I will create a cover for the crate that affords her some air but adds warmth.

We just returned from a 4k mile car ride and the motels were more receptive than we had experienced in the past. (Except the casinos in Wendover.)

What else do I need to do or other suggestions?

I have traveled many a mile with a dog or two with me. You pretty much covered most things. I stop a little more than every two hours to let them out to do their thing. Keeping them warm in the cold is important as well as keeping them cool in the heat. I have always made provisions of sorts for when it rains so they will keep dry.
I haven't had much of a problem with motels either with the exception of Canada. Had problems with them in a few places.
I hope you have better luck with the Doggles than I. Mine just don't want to wear them and keep removing them.
It is a lot easier to travel with Sheba in my trike now than with the two wheels, but then I made a special place for her.

I've traveled with a dog for several years. Last dog was a 29 lb Terrier shelter dog. She rode with me almost 20,000 miles in a crate without a top and no leash on the back of a Yamaha Roadstar. We took tent camping trips through the rocky mountains and visited 8 states. Had to put her to sleep in Aug, 2009.

New puppy last year and new trike this year. She hasn't traveled yet, but has ridden probably 200 miles around the area just to get her used to it. I built a carrier for her crate, and she seems to just snuggle in and doesn't mind it at all.

She has doggles and won't wear them. I ordered them with the dark lens, and I think they are too dark and restrict her vision too much? I'm going to order lighter ones and try them again. But in a car, she hangs her head out the window and 70 mph and seems to love the wind.
