If you really want to go to STURGIS, go in JUNE, early JULY or SEPTEMBER.
There is no traffic and the T shirts are already available.

There are TWO things in South Dakota called Sturgis. One is a city. Go anytime you want. Very little to see for much of the year.

The other is a Rally. In the motorcycle world when one says they went to Sturgis they are talking about the event. The event runs from Belle Fourche to Hot Springs and Devils Tower to Wall. All of that is Sturgis the event. You can only go to Sturgis the event this year from August 3rd - 9th. If it wasn't for the event not much mention of the town would be made.

Basically true ... but 90% of the vendors are there at least a week or two before and after the "event". And that includes the pop up bars.
