Starting in gear

Does anyone know if there is a way to change the setting so the bike will start in gear without pressing one of the brakes? I had a friend stall in a busy intersection and he had to come to a complete stop to get it restarted. This is a dangerous safety function Harley installed. I had it happen to me as well. I couldn’t press either brake just enough for the light to come on either. I had to come to a complete stop in traffic to get it to start. Hitting neutral when you’re in a hurry is almost impossible as we all know too.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Richard, Welcome to Trike Talk and your first post

To my knowledge there is currently no work around on the starting without the brake/brakes ( when stalled)

This is a very bad design IMO and someone will get hurt or killed because of this set up

My Freewheeler will start in gear ( stalled in in traffic) with very light brake pressure, I dunno how it compares to a Triglide

What year Tri are we talking about here?

Some had clutch switch problems, causing starting in gear issues

No way......Nature of the beast..AKA Safety Cops....

Just to add I had a 2017 Triglide bought it new and I can’t remember in all my years of riding bikes stalling one so often.. I found out that the clutch lever had a very abrupt engagement so I put on an adjustable clutch lever and never stalled it again..

And yes if you stalled it in gear either put it in neutral or step on the break’s..

My 17 was touchy until I installed a set of recurved levers. I have had mine stall in traffic while turning right into an intersection, definitely intimidating.

I would say it would be fairly simple to over ride the safety switch if someone was so inclined

I might do it on my bike but I wouldnt do it on anyone elses

My rider mowers have a switch under the seat so with the engine running if you get off the machine the engine shuts down I fix that with a U-shaped piece of copper wire…..But theirs no way I would think of messing with the wiring in a Triglide..Just saying..!..

Yeah I wouldnt/wont mess with the wiring either. but since just touching the brakes will over ride the safety. it would just be a matter of running a hot wire from the switched side of the ignition switch. to where ever the wire from the brake light switch goes to the safety switch for the starter. And install a diode so it wouldnt back feed the brake lights .

Just touching the brakes W/Trans in gear Activates the safety which..Its not like yesterday when one wire ran to just one accessory , Nowadays one wire does more than one accessory..Hence you see people posting about their trike throwing a code or on some makes going into limp mode after they monkey with something...IE; Adding extra lights, Changing handlebars..ETC,ETC......

I am all in with Bob here

The new can bus electrical system is a very ill tempered redhead step child

I see nothing but bad JU JU messing with diodes and other wiring to defeat the switches, not to mention if there ever is a ( recall by HD) how are you going to face this, or worse yet what if your brake lights fail and you get rear ended and the insurance company investigates and sees the switch has been tampered with

More bad JUJU just my humble opinion

I Did that to switch on my zero turn a few years back, Got a pretty steep hill to go up the grass was tall and a little wet, got about half way up the hill lost traction sliding down the hill backwards it got traction & flipped over I dont no how I got away from it, it was running upside down with the blades running, I thought I was F ING Graveyard Dead ! My new Zero turn I did not Touch ant safety switches, I had to get the big tractor to flip it back over :xzqxz::D

Like I already said I am not going to try and hack it.

But the safety was engineered and built by humans

It can be hacked by humans or just eliminated completely

Its the lawyers- inexperienced peepo's starting in gear and running through grandmas patio doors. I practised in a parking lot intentionally stalling out and doing a restart.

Yep its the lawyers and stupid people that wont take responsibility for there own screw ups !

The local Harley Dealer here wouldnt let me take my wife on a test ride on a trike because an idiot drove thru a wooden fence that is in front of there outside display area just a week ago.

He managed to break his leg and his wife got some serious facial injuries. on a Tri-Glide !

Then they were talking about suing the dealership ! :xzqxz::mad:

So the dealer implemented a no passenger rule

It almost cost the dealership the sale of a Tri-Glide to me also

Cause my attitude is its a touring bike if my wife cant see if she likes being on the back or not its a nonstarter

My wife also has her motorcycle license they would let her take it for ride but she couldnt ride on the back as a passenger :xzqxz:

All because of Idiots and lawyers !

Easy you take the Trike out for test ride but have your wife waiting around the corner In a phone booth drive by and she jumps on and there you go…..😁..

Yep Clark Kent’s dressing room……😉..
