Slipping Grip

I am enjoying my new(2me) '11 TG. I have noticed that the left grip is moving on the bar. It will rotate, and can be slid in-out on the bar. Is it supposed to do that?

I have some of the glue left from a grip change I made on my son's Honda Shadow. Could I use it and just put it on the bare bar with the grip slid down? Is there anything I could screw-up trying this?

NO-it ain't right! The adhesive has broken loose, I've used rubber cement or even rv silicone on them and had success. Pull your grip off and clean the bar before re installing. I'm sure there will be many other suggestion like contact adhesive but you have to rotate it just right because it adheres instantly-I like to be able to get exact placement and leave it overnight to dry.:Dpoof

Years ago when I bought my 88 Softail Custom you sprayed hair spray on the bars & grips when you changed the grips. Now you clue them. You could try cleaning the bar & spray the hair spray & see if it works. Its worth a try.

You can't hurt putting more oriental parts on...... Just be sure & clean all the old glue off. You can take the grip off by taking the housing apart to get the grip completely off. As mentioned before hair spray is what I have used for years. Not the soft set, the good stuff ! Just let it set for a while after you assemble, whatever you use.

Here is another vote for hairspray. Was taught this 30 years ago - get the dollar store maxumum hold cheap kind. No use wasting money on the brand name stuff, and the dollar store stuff holds better. Clean the inside of the grip and the bar, spray inside the grip liberally and a very light coat on the bar and install the grip with a twisting motion. Any that is pushed out can be cleaned with alcohol, Goo-Gone or even WD-40 while it is still wet.

OK, Thanks for all the advice, and now, feeling completely foolish bozo, I will ask: "How do I take the housing apart?"

I took the one large Torque screw out of the top, and can't see any others, and it is not moving or coming apart. :gah:

Being very new at this, I did not want to just start prying on it, or beating it, so I thought I'd come ask for help again

My experience with these grips (left side only) is that you twist and rotate them to break them loose to remove them-should just slide off without loosening any screws. The right grip requires removeal of the throttle housing screws to remove.

It looks like there is a flange on the end of the grip that is inside the housing. The grip will slide outward to a point then just stops.

Mabe a skinny screwdriver on the inside would gently ease it off whats is hangin up. Try rotating it with firm pressure downward. Maybe there is a small set screw or allen set screw that is not obvious.

Another vote for hair spray. (Ever notice what it smells like when the OL puts it on her hair?) You can use a razor knife to get the loose grip off, just like peeling a stuck radiator hose off that old Valiant you used to own.

FIRST: PUT A TOWEL OVER YOUR FUEL TANK FOR PAINT PROTECTION !!
To get the switch housing loose there is another screw from the bottom on the tank side. The take the reverse switch top off and use a 5/32 allen wrench to loosen the clutch housing (2 screws). You probably won't have to take it completely off but enough to give yourself enough clearance for the grip flange. It is rubber, and will bend over, so not much slack is needed.
The grips that everyone are talking about is for aftermarket grips that have no flange. You could just cut the flange, but then there is no safety stop like you have found on these. Otherwise it would work just fine as long as the glue holds...... If you have good heavy duty hairspray, I have never had that come loose.
Have fun, it's not all that much to do.......

Be Safe !

Just a note: When you get an aftermarket set of grips they show to just cut the left grip off. But I never do that as a primary way. You may never use your old grips, but you never know.

OK, worked it out. Thanks to all for the help.

There is a second screw on the bottom, but I was looking in the wrong place. I was looking at the bottom of the reverse switch housing, and the screw was on the bottom of the horn/headlight switch housing. I was able to loosen the housing for the horn switch, and twist the grip out. There is a flange, that sits in a groove in the housing.

I cleaned the bar and the inside of the grip with 400 grit sandpaper, then spread some 2 part epoxy (because I had it here, and would have had to go buy hair spray). Twisted the grip into place, wiping off the excess before it got all the way up to the housing. Slipped the flange into the groove, and screwed the housing back down. Let it sit for a couple hours, and it is just fine.

Here is a pic of the end of the grip, showing the flange.
