Well I did it. I bought a 2008 Electra Glide with Lehman “Renegade” rear. Will be at my local HD dealer next week to get the Pingel electric speed shifter kit. Now I have another question. What do you think about electrical vs gear drive reverse? Advantages and/or disadvantages to each type? Anyone have guestimate about cost of kit and labor charges? Have to admit it sucks getting old.

:AGGHH:
Thanks.

The electric reverse is an assist reverse... The mechanical [Gear] reverse is a true reverse.. I 86ed my Electric for a mechanical,[17 hundred$] So now i'll park anywhere, Downhill in gravel i back out with out any problems... If you live in the flatlands then maybe you can get by with the electric...

I have the mechanical reverse on my Harley. It just installs on the end of the transmission and should last as long as the transmission. I had an elictric reverse on my Goldwing. There is no comparision. I can speed up and slow down with the mechanical and I don't have to worry about the battery. Go mechanical.

Electric Shifter and Electric Reverse, sounds like the beginning of charging system problems.

Put a Champion 6 speed reverse gear on it and forget about it. It will cost you $1,600-$1,800 installed and will be the best money you spent and is easy to use and understand.

Why the electric shifter ????

Hi I have a 2012 Ultra Classic with a Lehman Renagade Kit installed. I had the Champion mechanical reverse fitted, it cost $1350.00 and $500 fitting cost.
It is fantastic I use it all the time. As you have to engage 1st gear to stop the gear box spinning, then put the bike in reverse, You just have to remember to take it out of first before you reverse then remember to take it out of reverse before you engage first. I have almost forgotten a few times, and could have damaged my gear box. I know it sounds a little complicated but I still think its better than an electric one.

Don't know about Champion.... But my Mototrike mechanical reverse has a Reverse lock out harness ... So if your in Reverse and put it in first it will immediately stop the engine , No chance of doing any damage..I would if i was you check with your installer to see why you don't have a lockout...

Just to add with mine i turn the ignition on put it in neutral slip the lever in reverse start the engine, ease of the clutch and back up. Then to go forward i clutch, slip the lever out of reverse hit first gear and go..

if i remember correctly motortrike uses the champion reverse i may be wrong though been know to happen

I had mine fitted in Australia, by the local bike shop (Not Harley) the guys followed the champion installation instructions, but they did not mention anything about a lockout, and to be honest I do not want to test it just in-case. But I am sure if it comes with a lockout they would have installed it. Its been fitted for about 2 years now so I doubt if the guys would remember, maybe I will contact Champion.

I'd go with mechanical reverse. When I was at Bike Week back in 2011 I took a Tri-glide for a test ride and I didn't care for the electric reverse. (JMHO)
Never used reverse on the Wing didn't like the fact that it used the starter.

Go mechanical..electric was a piece of :AGGHH: IMO..It worked but drained the electric system when used and was slow.

:Agree: Hannigan installed the Champion mech reverse on our trike and it works great. Our Street Glide/Transformer is light and pretty easy to move around but there's no way I would want to own a trike w/o reverse.

Mechanical reverse is the best way to go, cost is high but peace of mind is worth it. I got the Champion on mine and it looks pretty straight forward to install. You can download the instructions from their web site.

Reverse

The one thing I dislike about my TriGlide is the Electric reverse. I loved the mechanical reverse I had on my Electraglide with Lehman conversion. Go with Mechanical if given the choice.
