question about harley air shocks?

I have to replace my rear shocks because 1 side is bad, the question is Why did this shock decide to quit working.

I do know I road the trike and never check the air pressure for the shocks, will this ruin them? most the time I use 20lb of air, it has set for about 2 years with out being checked plus I had them off bike. I will make sure the replacement set always has air in them. anyone got a good idea what could cause shock to go bad?

Running it without air wouldn't necessarily rune the shocks..Could be when you had them of the trike the shock oil leaked out of one...

Or sometimes things just happen..:Shrug:...
