A few days ago I got a Federal Jury Summons that required me to answer questions before reporting for jury duty. So I went on line and completed the questions. Then I got a notification that I was "excused" from jury duty. They didn't specifically say it was age related but one of the questions asked if I was over 70 years old. I don't "think" I'm that old. I still like riding my bike. I still like the company of younger people. I still like having an independent opinion. And I still think my life experience has value. But apparently the court system thinks I'm too old to be objective. I was actually looking forward to serving but that is not to be. Oh well, life goes on and now I have more time to ride..... Many years ago i had jury duty....3 and a half days on a case.....Biggest waste of my time and the taxpayers money...The guilty party was on trial for assaulting a security guard while stealing razor blades and batteries at a A & P Store..Half way through the 3Rd day he copped a plea ......

jhb, you will probably find that the older you get the more isolated you feel. Having progressed to 88, that is my experience. not complaining, jus sayin' it is reality. Guess I'm pretty happy to be upright and still riding.

Wasted times

Got called to Foley Square in NYC , many moons ago. I’m a country boy. Had to get on the train , then subway , out of the rabbit hole and your there. Got called for a mafia crime case , then got excused as some of the names were familiar to me . Did that for two days . That’s when I realized that subway people are all miserable and strange . Ain’t been there , city , since , and not only do I want to go again , as it’s a whole different world to me that was a nitemare .

Before I got too old to serve I recall the last 3 times I received a jury summons I was twice rejected once it became known that I worked as a high ranking civilian for the Houston PD for many years. Apparently I must have had a biased opinion. The last time I sat all day and after not being picked. Was instructed to come back the next day for the next round. The very next morning as soon as I checked in the bailiff took me aside and apologized that I had not been weeded out the day before due to my questionnaire I filled out and said the judge dismissed me from having to serve after all. Have turned 70 since. Guess there is at least one advantage to getting old.

Same here in Virginia. The wife and I were both called last year. When we answered that we were over 70, we were excused.

Kinda SKEERT to go because of the virus anyway.

Funny how they don't want us making decisions on a jury after 70, but can serve in Congress and all the way to President past that age. Doesn't sound right to me.

Not there yet but I was always under the impression that it meant you were not legally bound to serve any longer but you could if you wanted to... :Shrug:

I remember my mother was so happy to get that “excused from jury service” notice because she just detested having to drive from the northside into the downtown bowels of San Antonio...I don’t blame her.. I worked for a legal firm in downtown San Antonio for about 9 months before I got a job offer to go back to Midland in west Texas... I couldn’t get there fast enough.

What I found interesting is that I didn't ask to be excused. But, like your mom, I wasn't looking forward to fighting my way into the big city during commute time. I didn't read all the fine print after I saw that I was excused. Perhaps they would have accepted me if I really wanted. Looks like 70 is the magic age for no more jury duty..... Jim

Interesting. I've been registered to vote since I turned 21, been paying property taxes since I wa 24 but have only been called 1 time. I was in the jury pool for 3 months got called on 2 trials both plead out. Now at 75 guess I dont have to worry about it any more.

Maybe there's more than just the age factor at work for excusing people over 70. If you were being prosecuted for a crime and things seem to be going your way, would you want someone on the jury to suddenly have to be hospitalized, then have to start the whole trial all over again? Could be costly for the person being prosecuted, but definitely would be costly for the county to have to start the trial all over again.

Good point - but I was under the impression they had alternate juror(s) chosen they could substitute in case a situation arose as you pointed out.

Been about 3 years since I was called to jury duty.... a lot of water under the bridge since then.... so I'm a little rusty with all the rules/regulations...

Have you taken a good look at the people in congress as well as our current president who are over 70?? No wonder they don't want anyone over 70! :xzqxz::AGGHH::AGGHH:

When i was on jury duty ....They did have alternate jurors....
