Pic Heavy Ride Report - MS to Bella Coola & Back 11,000 Miles Heat, Hail & Bears

Day 30-

And what a day it was!

We stayed in a Super 8, Mary's preferred chain, & leaving out of Midvale the temp was pleasant, in the 80's.

1%20Leaving%20Super%208%20in%20Midvale_zps0bkazkqh.jpg

There was traffic, a lot for what we are used to...

2%20traffic%20Yuk_zpsc5y6j4ld.jpg

...but thru most of the congestion on the freeway we were able to travel in the HOV lane.

3%20Car%20Pool%20Lane_zpsdsvth0sl.jpg

We finally got back out onto the open road...

4%20Out%20of%20traffic%20fun%20road_zpsklnz6ecr.jpg

...and there was some really nice sweepers and sights.

5%20more%20like%20it_zpse2e4vel3.jpg

For awhile we traveled behind this couple on a Softail...

6%20Behind%20couple%20on%20Softail%20in%20Con%20Zone_zpsg4577hl0.jpg

...but it was not long before we tired of them slowing in even the most gentle sweepers, we blasted past them with a friendly wave, then had the road pretty much to ourselves for quite a few miles.

Price Canyon is a fun ride...

8%20Starting%20Price%20Canyon_zpsfwzlsfuk.jpg

...and quite spectacular, looking back...

More in next post.

Day 30 continued-

When we first left Midvale it was nice, in the 80's. We both switched out our leather jackets for our mesh jackets while we were in Missoula. Mary also has mesh pants.

By the time we hit this gas station it was around 100*.

We got gas, and a lot of water.

I also ate a bit and took care of some business, on the phone, with the shop.

We weren't in any big hurry to get back out in the sun, but after about 30 minutes we were on our way.

11%20Stopped%20for%20gas%20and%20water%20100_zpsru6llq6q.jpg

As we headed southeast on the 6/191...

12%20Long%20straight%20hot_zps7lhp69s9.jpg

...we got teased a few times by seeing rain in the distance....

13%20saw%20rain%20in%20distance_zps8vv5ph6g.jpg

...but not a drop fell on us.

:)

14%20Miles%20and%20miles%20of%20hot%20desert_zps6c7z5fgd.jpg

It is a funny thing about heat- yeah, I know a lot of folks live & ride in this all the time, but it is new to us.

The funny think we noticed is that going from 90* - 98*, there does not seem to be that much difference. It is warm, but not terribly uncomfortable. With the mesh jackets, and Mary's mesh pants, she just keeps them wet and, for me it's not bad at all, for Mary, she does not like it so much, but she manages it by keeping her mesh wet and using her water spray bottle.

But, BUT, going from 98* - 106*, this is a HUGE change, a whole other world! It did not bother me terribly, but I could definitely feel the 8* increase from 98 to 106 was drastically different than the 8* increase from 90 to 98.

Mary, did NOT LIKE IT AT ALL!

Even the camera took some weird pics, and it was mile....

15%20Wow_zpskwwoq1cg.jpg

...after mile with no shade, no cloud cover.

16%20So%20Hot%20106_zpsgkgoahml.jpg

Mary asked me to pull over, she was feeling sick...there was nowhere, I had been looking for an off-ramp, or some shade, then a minute or so later...an off-ramp!

It didn't go to anywhere close by, but we were able to park under the overpass to get some shade.

17%20Hiding%20from%20heat_zps3g6slwq3.jpg

We stayed under here for around 30 minutes, just wetting down, drinking and when Mary felt better, we got back on the road.

It wasn't another 30 miles and we are in Colorado!

18%20Colorado_zpszaurykwh.jpg

And another 25 miles and we see the Colorado river....it is now down to about 102* and we have some cloud cover.

:)

19%20Colorado%20River%20close%20to%20GJ_zpsy5iawnwr.jpg

Rolling into Grand Junction! It is still over 100*, but with the cloud cover, and the Super 8 nearby, I am feeling quite a bit better about being able to get Mary out of the heat! :)

20%20Grand%20Junction_zpst5sj726w.jpg

Tomorrow we Ride with Fuzzy, aka FuzzyWuzHe, to see the sights GJ has to offer.

Kevin

as i was told when we went out there 3 years ago. get out early and try and be at your next stop by 1pm at the latest.

Good advice .... or stay in the high country ... we are in the 100's pretty much every day from mid June to Early August ... but it's a dry heat ... :AGGHH: ... we are technically classified as "High Desert" ... 5200 feet and humidity in the teens most of the time ... the good news ... soaking your clothes will cool you down and it won't take long to dry. Save lots of the water for yourself to drink ...

:D

I can confirm...that is REALLY GOOD ADVICE! ThumbUp

Yeah, well, it dries too fast! :D

Mary and I have decided we like the humid heat Far more than the dry heat. :)

A couple of days in Grand Junction, visiting and riding with Alan, aka Fuzzy. ThumbUp

Last night we met Fuzzy, Alan, and went down the road for dinner. Had a great time visiting, closed the place down. Great food, Great conversation, & A/C for Mary. :)

Went out to the parking lot, our two Tri-Glides were the only vehicles there. Yes, there are two TG's in the pic below....shows you the benefit of a light color at night time.

1%20After%20Dinner_zpsp6mwclfk.jpg

This morning we see someone had scraped against my rear fender in the Motel parking lot. Does not look good, but will see if it buffs out.

2%20Someone%20scraped%20my%20fender_zpsp6guzdct.jpg

So...Today was a BIG day! Fuzzy took us to the Colorado National Monument, then to the Grand Mesa, then to the HD Dealership, then back to the Super 8, our home away from home.

Mary took over 650 pics, and most of them are spectacular.

It's going to take a few days to whittle it down to 60 or 80 of the best.

Here's the first installment-

Following Alan out of Grand Junction.

3%20Headed%20out_zpswdgkfjcr.jpg

It is not long before we are at the entrance to the Colorado National Monument.

4%20Following%20Fuzzy%20to%20CNM_zpsgaosfqni.jpg

Since he knows I like the twistys, and knows I can't take a wrong turn (only one road), he tells me to get up front.

5%20Here%20we%20go_zpspkaligaj.jpg

This is gonna be fun!

:)

6%20This%20is%20gonna%20be%20fun_zpsr7snwp2h.jpg

Oh yeah, after the long straight road yesterday, in crazy heat, it is nice to be climbing into cooler temps via some really great curvy road!

7%20Oh%20Yeah_zpsgozdpnbb.jpg

An off camber long sharp curve ahead...just my kind of fun. :)

8%20off%20camber%20u_zpsyay66n7b.jpg

But, very quickly I find myself torn....I like to ride hard into the curves...but the sights dictate a slower pace to fully appreciate this amazing place.

9%20struggle%20sights%20road_zpscfrf5lbn.jpg

I decide to take a much more leisurely pace, enjoying all the sights. Every now and then I speed up for a curve, but mostly we lollygagged along, trying to take it all in.

At this point you can see a bit of the fun road, and we are just barely started!

Colorado National Monument continued...

WOW! Everywhere we look...

...the sights are amazing!

12%20Amazing%20Place_zpsfzhusje3.jpg

Just breathtaking!

13%20breathtaking_zps6kpweqe5.jpg

As we climb, Mary takes a pic of Alan coming up the hill in this enchanted place.

14%20Fuzzy_zpsb8n5bulx.jpg

This looks strange, not sure where the road it going...

15%20whats%20this_zpsxdlmtobu.jpg

...ah, a tunnel. That's a lot of rock!

16%20A%20tunnel_zpsjwhpxgst.jpg

Looks like a massive amount of work cutting thru here!

17%20lot%20of%20rock_zpsscqpogra.jpg

Looking back at Fuzzy, the tunnel, and where we've come. This place defies words.

18%20out%20the%20other%20side_zps5jowvoh7.jpg

Another tunnel, much shorter, much rougher.

19%20Another%20rougher%20tunnel_zpsnhcgh78n.jpg

A look at just a bit of the road we've traveled so far. Wow!

Day with Fuzzy continued, still on the Colorado National Monument.

Stopped at the Fruita Canyon Overlook...we're no where near the top, but the view is spectacular.

22%20Fruita%20Canyon_zps5t1afeit.jpg

We were looking at the clear coat I put on my rear wheels to see how it was holding up. Just a couple small spots where it looks like it got chipped by some rocks.

21%20Looking%20at_zpsrg4vj7cw.jpg

Stopped at the visitor center. Inside, was so enthralled with all the info on how they built the road, did not take any pics. lol

23%20Visitor%20Center_zps0ujlozjm.jpg

Back on the road, heading up the hill.

24%20back%20climbing%20some%20more_zpss8bayjur.jpg

Looking back.

25%20looking%20back_zpsl11wy9l0.jpg

Usually Mary takes what pics she can as we are riding. The scenery up here is so immense, that I was constantly slowing down, sometimes stopping for pics.

26%20What%20a%20view_zpsooia0vki.jpg

The edge of the road the road is hanging out over/above the road....not something I really care for. lol But it is an amazing sight!

27%20Side%20of%20hill%20hanging_zpsxavqyavf.jpg

Everywhere we turn the views are HUGE. Pic taken on the fly.

28%20Amazing_zpsm9ktuvgc.jpg

Even though I was mostly taking a leisurely pace, every now and then some curves just begged for me to him them hard...which I did. :)

Near the top, taking in the view.

Colorado National Monument with Fuzzy continued.

We're starting to head back down now...

31%20headed%20down%20now_zpst77agztt.jpg

Mary missed a shot she wanted...so we did a u-turn. Alan was a bit unsure at first, but then realized how stable these TG's are. :)

32%20U%20Turn_zps6ar4vcvl.jpg

Amazing view!

33%20Amazing_zpsc2tom122.jpg

Look ma, no hands! Felt a bit like we were on a roller coaster, and it looked like the road ended up ahead. :)

34%20Look%20Ma_zpsa5q7jnwt.jpg

Some more fun curves!

35%20fun%20curves_zpsrfsnkfrn.jpg

Oh Yeah! :)

36%20Oh%20Yeah_zpsgljo4lxx.jpg

This pic is not distorted, that is how the road surface was angled. Fun!

37%20no%20distortion_zpsv3xxl1zx.jpg

Everywhere we looked the road was fun and the sights were amazing. We can't thank Alan enough for taking us on this tour today.

Whenever I heard of the Colorado National Monument, I thought it was a monument, a statue.

38%20Looking%20back_zps0o7b79vv.jpg

Another tunnel...

39%20Another%20tunnel_zpsqsrmdu8e.jpg

...guess they decided not to tunnel thru this, just blow a channel thru the rock!

40%20No%20Tunnel%20Just%20cut%20thru_zpsaclwhff6.jpg

We still have a bit more the the CNM, then a ride across some desert, then up to the Grand Mesa, then a ride thru a great canyon road, then some more desert, then back in GJ.

Next installment coming soon.

Kevin

A tour with Fuzzy continued!

There is no denying this is a fun road!

...from the top, at 7200 ft, to the bottom at 4700 ft...

45%20Still%20coasting_zpsjlufgli2.jpg

...about 1/2 of that drop is steep enough...

46%20TG%20laughs%20at%20sign_zps6rjng2gp.jpg

...that I just put it in neutral, shut the engine off, and we "flew" down. No sound but the rushing wind.

Almost at the bottom...

On to the Grand Mesa!

Crossing about 50 miles of desert...yeah, it was up around 100* again...to get to the base of the Grand Mesa...

52%20Toward%20GM_zps6b3s2ou0.jpg

Fuzzy set a good pace and we were there quickly.

51%20Tooling%20along%2075mph_zpshjwop0th.jpg

Filling up before getting some lunch and then heading up the hill.

btw, we both filled up at the same gas stations, and we both rode very close to the same ride. I did slow down some in the straights and nail it every now and then in the corners. I also coasted down a few mile hill with the engine off. We compared MPG several times and he was always about .7 to 1 mpg better than us. For all the riding we did, we averaged 38 mpg, that includes climbing up the National monument, and then also climbing up to over 10000 feet on the Grand Mesa, also including close to 100 miles of 70-80 mph interstate riding.

53%20Gassing%20up%20before%20lunch%20GM_zpsq12lduea.jpg

After lunch at Subway, and some good visiting, we started up the hill...

54%20Beautiful%20Day_zps48pvvsar.jpg

...stunning country, and more fun riding!

55%20Climbing%20the%20to%20the%20GM_zpsqjlfvsde.jpg

Still climbing...from the floor to the top is about a 6000 ft climb. At the top, is the largest flat top mesa in the world.

56%20Still%20Climbing_zpse0rupjsx.jpg

A lake along the way.

57%20Lake%20near%20GM%20visitor%20center_zpskg89pd67.jpg

And still more climbing. It is getting cooler, which is very welcomed! :)

58%20Still%20Climbing_zpsjq4nxwdm.jpg

A look back at the lake we just passed a bit ago.

What a view! Emerald colored lakes always get me.

63%20Gravel%20Rd%20View_zpsgh47soeu.jpg

Whoa! What's this? Alan takes us on a dirt/gravel road that is reminding me of The Hill out of Bella Coola!

Another amazing view!

We got to the top, something around 11,000 feet, and it has been nice and cool for awhile now. :)

It is really flat....

I'm being a bit selfish here but I'm not looking forward to you and Mary arriving home and finishing this trip. I have looked forward to ALL your posts and have totally enjoyed each an every one of them. I'm so envious!! Looking forward to the day that I can just take off and see some of the natural beauty that North America has to offer.

With that said, I wish you continued safe travels and good weather for the remainder of your trip.

I gotta admit ... I had a blast riding with Kevin and Mary ... great people ... If you get the chance to ride with them, do it .. but make sure at least some of the time your behind them ... just so you get a feel for what Mary does to get her great pics ... LOL ... it's truly entertaining. :D
