Pic Heavy 2016 Ride Report - 40 Days Following the Front Wheel

As a lot of vet's in his era they have not received the honors they deserved. Sorry for your loss Mary, as we know he is in a better place now.

Kevin, I'm just down the road from your house, well I'm in Tupelo headed home from Gulf Shores where we have been this week.

I am sure I have said this before, but sorry for your lose. Mary's Dad sounds like he was an awesome man to know and quite the patriot.

Looking forward to the rest of your trip!

It couldn't have been expressed better, ol' school, Ditto!

he served his county well. tu for the insite

I am sure that Mary's dad is resting after being a Soldier for his Country. Jim

I just read all these posts to Mary. She was speechless.

Just cried a bit, and then said he was so proud of being a Soldier.

Thank you so much, from the both of us.

Day 33-

We're changing up our route a bit, so that Mary can be in Colorado Spring by noon tomorrow.

Today we're headed down the Million Dollar Highway, will be going as far as Alamosa, CO tonight.

The river behind the River's Edge Motel we've been staying at.

The 550, aka Million Dollar Highway is an amazing road to ride!

11%20Just%20started_zpstbne7slj.jpg

Right near the beginning of it, outside of Ouray, is a scenic stop. That's a lotta water!

12%20Lotta%20water_zpseamahvym.jpg

They have quite a bit of information on how it was built, pictures from the olde days, and there was this old fart wondering around the area. lol

I was away a couple of weeks taking vacation, then don't have access to a computer when I'm in the perimeter truck 4 night a week now, so I haven't been posting much.

Just read about Mary's Dad passing, and I wanted to add my condolences and thankfulness for his service to this great country. If you'd pass that on to Mary, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Scott

What beautiful part of the country. Thanks for the ride and photo's and I hope the both of you are enjoying it as much as I am. DJ

I did Hwy 550 (Million Dollar Hiway) from Silverton to Ouray, CO on July 8th. Did you get your patch at the gift store in Silverton? The young lady that runs it was the designer of the 550 patch!

Hey Scott, hope you had an enjoyable vacation.

Thank you, I will pass on your message to Mary tonight.

What beautiful part of the country. Thanks for the ride and photo's and I hope the both of you are enjoying it as much as I am. DJ

Yes, this is a trip that has made a Lot of good memories for us.

I did Hwy 550 (Million Dollar Hiway) from Silverton to Ouray, CO on July 8th. Did you get your patch at the gift store in Silverton? The young lady that runs it was the designer of the 550 patch!

No, did not get a patch, I did pick up an Silverton HD Poker Chip at their little gift shop there.

Day 33 Continued-

As we got near Silverton we ran into stopped traffic. While we were waiting our turn to go thru the 1 lane, 1 way section, this Hot Rod drove by.

31%20Hot%20Rod%20at%20traffic%20jam_zpscl8ylog0.jpg

After waiting better than 30 minutes, we finally started thru the construction zone. As you can see, there was not much room to work or travel between the rock and the edge.

32%20After%20wait_zpsqu5ulbs5.jpg

Back rolling, this is a fun road and I was not behind those cars by the time we were thru the first curve they're slowing down for in this pic. :)

This museum is huge! Different from many museums you can walk around the displays, some have a barrier, but many you are walking right around them.

41%20M5_zpshrfltgqb.jpg

Very interesting read-

42%20M5_zpsobaxhbdd.jpg

We are now in the underground section of the museum.

43%20M7_zpsud9wzglq.jpg

I lost count of how many rooms there are underground AND above ground. Thousands upon thousands of items on display. We took a couple hundred pics, just sharing a few.

That is a Really Old 'calculator" in the center.

We forgot to change batteries in Silverton, so we stopped on the side of the road here to change them out. I decided to walk down to this stream and see if my boots were still waterproof...and to see how cold the water was. These boots have well over 70k miles of riding on them, still holding up well, and still waterproof. The water.... IT'S COLD!

That museum looks like an awesome place! Loved the old cook stove ! Reminded me of the one my Grandmother had in the kitchen of their farmhouse. She made many a good meal on it and made the best sourdough bread and cinnamon rolls in its oven. And it heated up the place in the winter too and dried my hunting gloves many a time. Thanks for the memory!

Very cool. We have a wood-burning cook stove in our home currently. Mary has not cooked on it much, but it has heated our home many winters.

Day 33 Concluded-

We've not traveled this road before, but it sure looks like we are headed into a storm. When we stopped for gas we put on our rain suits.

81%20Stopped%20for%20Gas%20and%20RS_zpsxyzg4yqe.jpg

82%20Gas%20and%20RS_zpsszwfkvh6.jpg

Back rolling...

83%20A%20look%20ahead_zpsfzrudcbs.jpg

...it looks like we're going to miss the worst of it. We are starting to hit roads that have already had the storm pass over.

84%20Which%20way_zpskyxtias9.jpg

But there is no avoiding some of it. There was a fair amount of lightning off to our right, but only rain ahead.

85%20missed%20most_zpssxso9ra4.jpg

This was the last pic Mary took before tucking the camera away for the next 30 minutes. It got very heavy....in this pic, when it was just starting, you can see a good amount of rain going above and to the left of my hand.

86%20Put%20away_zpssj3hnnhz.jpg

I got just a snippet of video. The video camera somehow was seeing much better than I was. lol It was coming down pretty hard. I almost pulled over.

We hit a low spot in the road where the front tire hydroplaned briefly.

Click HERE to see the short video.

After a bit we came out of the storm and just ran in and out of light rain the rest of the way up the pass and down the other side.

87%20WCP%20Sign_zps9mpitxwn.jpg

This is a really fun road, and though it is a bit wet, we had plenty of traction...

Here is a short video of some of the fun we had going up the hill to the summit of Wolf Creek Pass.

At the summit. I've lost track of how many passes over 10,000 feet we ridden in Colorado, but it's been a bunch!

A look back as we start the ride down.

92%20A%20look%20back_zps5s4tz4ql.jpg

A picture of us both in the mirror. As you can tell, this has been an amazing day of riding. Colorado Rocks!

While we are really enjoying today, there is a bit of melancholy to the day. Tomorrow I am dropping Mary at the airport to fly back and see her dad.

We've been on many trips together over our 25 years of marriage...never had to interrupt one before, and finish it out separately.

93%20Both%20of%20us_zpsthujw7w3.jpg

Another look back at this beautiful country we're riding thru.

94%20Another%20look%20back_zpsiykqgvpe.jpg

As we got near the bottom of the pass, the canyon walls narrowed up, and there was a pretty robust stream running along the right side of the road.

95%20To%20the%20right_zpsmx9tt23n.jpg

Here is a short video of the picturesque ride at the bottom.

Click HERE to see the video.

Headed into another heavy rain cell. Was only 5 minutes, but it was coming down hard!

97%20More%20Rain_zpsqulgrxax.jpg

The TG is running really well. 40 mpg since we put on our rain suits. We are back at the same elevation as we started at 72 miles ago. Could not be more happy with it.

96%20MPG_zpspdkjofbv.jpg

That is our motel in Alamosa up on the left. It barely started raining as we arrived. By the time we were unloading it was coming down hard.

98%20More%20Rain%20at%20Motel_zpsmkghub9m.jpg

What an amazing day! I hope I did not drag it out too much with 97 pics and a few videos...I pared it Way down as it was. We have really enjoyed our time in Colorado.

Day 34 coming soon.

Kevin

Day 34-

Loaded up at the Super 8 in Alamosa. Rained a fair amount last nite, cleanest the TG has been in a while. :)

1%20Leaving%20out_zpspiif7fug.jpg

Passing by the turn off to the Great Sand Dunes National Park-

2%20Passing%20turn%20GSNP_zps2rywtyzz.jpg

We're moving along at a good clip, Mary needs to be at the airport in Colorado Springs in a couple of hours.

Stunning view to our left-

3%20To%20our%20left_zpsigcuzeau.jpg

This is a really nice riding road, just some relaxing winding asphalt.

4%20Nice%20riding_zps5espdmce.jpg

Some fellow travelers....thought there was a trike in the mix...it was a bike pulling a trailer.

5%20Fellow%20Travelers_zpsfd40k1ku.jpg

6%20Climbin%20La%20Veta%20Pass%209426_zpsd3sgavf3.jpg

Coming down the other side of the pass, super fun road...but we are a bit subdued, knowing in a couple of hours we are going separate ways.

7%20Down%20other%20side_zps7mvkwatk.jpg

Straight shot now to the 25. Still getting right around 40 mpg. Right around 155 miles on this tank, climbed and descended two passes, cruising mostly between 60-70 mpg. :)

8%20Straight%20shot%20to%2025_zpsghdb1dz1.jpg

On the 25 now, long, mostly straight to Colorado Springs Airport.

9%20Long%20straight%2025%20to%20CS_zpskvl49pfu.jpg

More in next post.

Day 34 continued-

Pulling into the airport at Colorado Springs.

I do solo trips all the time, enjoy them a lot. But it is a bit of a different feeling having started the trip together and finishing it solo. I think it is just as much that we know John will not be with us much longer.

10%20Airport_zps8wseofk2.jpg

After helping Mary get checked in, I take off for Kansas. Not sure how far I'll get, but this is what I see as I leave the airport-

11%20View%20leaving%20the%20airport_zpsfifo9fw1.jpg

I turned east right before hitting that rain, starting the long trek across the high flat straight desert of Colorado...

12%20Lot%20of%20flat%20straight%20road%20to%20Wakeeny_zpss2vfeohn.jpg

...which was pretty much the same as I crossed into Kansas.

13%20Crossing%20into%20KS_zpsgehhklqs.jpg

I am taking pics with the video camera...not trying to hold the camera that Mary uses and ride at the same time. :)

This road, the 70, has a great surface. I'm eating up the miles running 80-85 mph. MPG have dropped, partly due to the speed, partly the wind, and partly the lower altitude.

14%20eating%20up%20at%2080_zpsw5jbahky.jpg

Gas stops are a lot quicker riding solo. lol I am playing music off of the USB and the two gas stops I made tearing across KS were less than one song each.

15%202nd%20gas%20stop_zpsmryzegxz.jpg

Beautiful sky, great road surface for making miles disappear...and farmland, and more farmland. Whenever crossing thru farmland like this, I am thankful for the farmers that do the massive amount of work that makes it so easy for us to get our food.

16%20Growing%20our%20food_zpsxtcmfp7n.jpg

Decided to stop in Wakeeny, KS. A moderate 450 miles for the day...wanted to go further, but I was hungry & there was a Super 8, so just called it a day.

18%20Home%20for%20Night_zps1ieg8isi.jpg

Day 35 coming soon.

Kevin

Day 35-

Leaving out of Wakeeny, KS...

1%20Leaving%20Wakeeny_zpsrnswdqa6.jpg

...there are a LOT of miles that look like this.

2%20Miles%20and%20Miles_zpsqrhnsgmh.jpg

But the road surface is good, the traffic is very light, and the speed limit is high. These wind generators are HUGE!

3%20Wind%20Power_zpsjoiqws7y.jpg

I've been chasing the rain for a couple of hours, finally caught up with it...

4%20Chasing%20rain_zpsvxzmypxk.jpg

5%20Rain%20Suit_zpsymfnjhs5.jpg

6%20Rain_zpsmxaestbp.jpg

The last bit of 35 in Kansas is a Toll Road. Pulled into this gas stop on the toll road.

Got some gas, met a guy that rode in the Hoka Hey Challenge a couple of years ago. Talked with him for a bit. That is one crazy ride!

Went over to the McDonalds and got some lunch. Called Mary. She had a really good visit with her dad! :)

7%20tr%20ks%20HH%20CM%20McD_zpsucqzzaha.jpg

Back on the road...

8%20Rain_zpsduohfi1t.jpg

...the bottom fell out and it was coming down very hard for awhile.

9%20heavy_zpsglbfgw6m.jpg

It let up to just a steady rain by the time I arrived at the next toll booth.

10%20Toll%20in%20rain_zpsujyjtka5.jpg

More in next post.

Day 35 Continued & Concluded-

Back on the road after the toll booth. Yep, their mattress is getting wet AND it is trying to fly off their vehicle.

11%20Mattress_zpsrb5vnrgl.jpg

About an hour later, I had stopped for gas and then caught up/passed them again.

12%20Again_zpsygog4uvm.jpg

I missed the sign for entering into Oklahoma...must have been in the rain somewhere...but this is Oklahoma now.

13%20Horrible%20roads_zpsgwutrupa.jpg

Passing thru Tulsa, taking the Broken Arrow turn off, to the southeast. Decided to stay in Muskogee tonight.

14%20Tulsa_zpswhmpz1tj.jpg

In the late 90's I had business that took me to Oklahoma more than a few times. The roads were horrible then, and ever since I have avoided Oklahoma.

When planning this trip I thought they have had almost 20 years to get their act together, maybe it won't be so bad now.

No offense to those who live in Oklahoma...but the roads are still terrible. I suspect it will be another 15-20 years before I ride thru that State again.

15%20looks%20bad%20is%20worse_zpsibgyuph7.jpg

In the final stretch to reach Muskogee. Looking at this photo of the road surface, it does not look bad...but it is bad, very bad.

Talking to the clerk at the hotel, his words were "we have more toll roads than any other State, and worse roads than any other State, someones pocketing the money."

16%20Final%20Stretch_zpsxhkzwxtt.jpg

Turn off to Muskogee.

17%20Muskogee%20OK_zpsjqbpidnk.jpg

Tomorrow I am taking imold's advice and going to hit Mt. Nebo in Arkansas. Will be posting up pics soon.
