Passenger Grab Handles

My trike conversion kit is currently in transit from the USA to Australia, I am trying to prepare for its arrival. Can anyone tell me if the Kuryakyn passanger grab handles for the Ultra Classic will fit my trike kit.

Well you say your "trike conversion kit" is in transit.
What kit are you getting and what bike are you converting?
One would need that info in order to try and answer your question.
Dan

I put the kuryakyn set on a Lehman Jackal. I had to have a shop flatten the curved base. I dilled into the rear deck to anchor nuts. The most expensive part was the used Kuryakyn unit. I had a compelling need (my wife has hip issues). Be sure to think outside the box. Let me know if you want pics.

Hi aussie
I have a set of GRAB HANDLES with the CHROME covers for the Harley that states what bike it will fit under Classified on this site. They PERFECT as NEW. Check it out.

Good day

Before you buy a set of grab handles, determine the eventual ergos that you need. My wife needed a 5" cushion placed on the pillion for the angle of her knees to be comfortable. Using both the pillion and the cushion, the grab handles also had to be 5" higher.

The grab handles are made for the rear fender of a bike. Your trike probably will have a flat deck. Any grab handle set you buy will probably need the center flattened. You won't need a set made for your base bike because the set will need to be modified to fit your trike. Doughboy's set may or may not need to be modified, but the first question to answer is what ergos you need. I went with the Kuryakyn set because of what I needed for my wife's ergos.

Thanks guy's for your help, Doughboy unfortunatly your handles wont fit my bike. I have also had my seat reconfigured for her and its about 2" lower than stock. I think I will just have to buy a set of kuryakyn handles and have them modified.

I will try to take apart my grab handle mod for pics next week, but your response to Doughboy really has me wondering. If his handles would not produce the correct ergos for your wife, I don't think you will be happy with the Kuryakyn set.

What are you trying to accomplish? Grab handles are stock on a Lehman Jackal, but I had to raise the passenger seat 5 inches for my wife to sit comfortably. That meant she needed grab handles 5" higher, too. Doughboy's handles would not have been high enough. The Kuryakyns are. Without the 5" cushion, the Kuryakyns would have been 5 inches too high.

If all you are trying to do is add grab hadles, you might get by just adding handles. My stock handles are just bolted to the body, not the frame. Doughboy's set and the Kuryakyns are meant to be boltes to the rear fender, underneath the passenger seat

Things will be clearer when I get a chance to take and post pics.

Hi David, thanks again for your time. Doughboys for sale add listed the bikes that his handles would not fit, and my bike was on that list. I have had two inches of hieght taken out of my seat, so I would need the handles to be lower than the seat as to not interfear with my wifes legs. As you state the Kuryakyn handles bolt onto the rear fender, and my rear fender will be removed and I have not yet seen how the conversion fits, I really just wanted to know if there was a place on the new frame where I would secure the handles. I would not think the fiberglass body would be strong enough if someone was pullng thier weight against it. I would be worried about it cracking. Cheers Eddie

The trike has a deck under the pillion. The pillion is anchored in front by the driver seat and, in the rear, by the deck. That can support half the weight of your wife because that is part of the trike design. There is no rear fender to match. The Kuryakyn set was for a HD and my base bike is a Suzuki Boulevard C90 (1500cc). Don't worry about which bike the grab handle assembly was designed for. You are going to make it fit a flat deck. It will all be clear when I can take and post the pictures.

Thanks David I guess it will all be clear when I see your pics, I think my biggest problem is not knowing what support the trike will have, I will just have to be paitent and wait until the kit arrives and is partually fitted, I am sure between myself and my installer we will be able to sort it all out. Lehman said that the standard harley handles will fit. But because I have altered my seat I think I will have to modify whichever handles I buy.

Sorry it took so long to get these pictures ready.
If you buy the Kuryakyn set, the bracket has a curved cross-section like the cross-section of the rear fender. The rear deck on which you will be placing it is virtually flat. I had a shop flatten out the bottom of the bracket so that it would sit flat on the seat. To anchor the bolts, I made fender washer and nut sandwiches and attached the sandwiches to the deck with small nuts and bolts. The passenger seat sits on top of the bracket on top of the deck. I needed a longer bolt at the rear of the pillion.
Note that this setup was designed so it fit my wife, but I could return it to stock in a matter of minutes. For that reason, I left the original grab handles 5 inches below the Kuryakyn grips.

Hi David, thanks for your time, and taking your seat off and sending me some photos. I really appriciate it. I did not relise that the kuryakyn handles were so high. I think I will have to modify mine more than I thought. At least now I have more of an Idea how I will attach themto the trike, your pics were really helpful. I will take some photos and let you know how it all went, although that wont be for a few weeks. Thanks again Eddie

Aussie,
You are very welcome. Since you lowered the seat, give some consideration just to installing the new grab handles lower. You probably don't need any accessories. Don't rush things, but think them through. Keep things simple and cheap. I am on my fourth iteration of a toll-lane pass holder, and have two more, cheap designs ready to go, if needed.

Hi David, thanks again, Yes I will take my time in positioning the handles, I guess it will all depend on the wife and where she wants them. My kit was supposed to depart the USA on the 20 Aug, got news yesterday that its still there and now wont be dispatched until the 13 Sept..So I will just have to be paitent.. Cheers Eddie

Aussie,

Do you know how far below the level of the pillion the grab handles have to be? That may be something Lehman can do for you or tell you what you have to do yourself.

No I dont, and I wont know until my Kit arrives and I fit my seat to it. Lehman told me that my currently fitted harley handles would just transfer to the trike kit. But my bike did not come with fitted handles. cheers
