oil temp gauges

Thinking of replacing my air temp gauge with an oil temp gauge. Any comments?

If you are the type of person that wants to know what is going on then yes. I like to know when I have over heated the oil so I can change the oil. Doesn't happen often but nice to know when it does.

Air temp gauge is pretty useless. Replaced mine on my '05 with an oil temp gauge. Peace of mind.

Oil Temp Gauge

Thinking of replacing my air temp gauge with an oil temp gauge. Any comments?

Did it in my 2012. Glad I did. I use Ward's Fans and went back to dino oil. Oil temps rarely exceed 235, that makes dino oil happy.
The oil temp gauge makes much more sense than knowing what the air temp inside the fairing is.

That's pretty clean.

I replaced the air temp with the oil temp on my 11. On the 14 I have the dipstick temp gauge. I'm hoping one day they update the software to allow oil temp on the infotainment.

The only vehicle i've owned with a oil temp gauge was a VW GTi... And the few times i would scroll to it, On a hot day going through the Lincoln Tunnel it would read well over 300.. So i would ignore it and drive on.. What else can you do.. Stop in the middle of the tunnel and cry, My oil is hot 'my oil is hot';;; By the way when i gave it away the odometer was at 350 thousand miles, And never had any engine work done or needed.. Oil temp gauges are just another distraction...

I put on Wards fans and a Jagg 12row fan assist oil cooler. Pulled that worthless air temp gauge out. Moved my AMP gauge over in it's place and put the oil temp gauge right above the oil pressure gauge. Now with a glance to the right I see the temp and the pressure.

MY opinion, MY experience
Worst Mod I ever did

When I migrated from the 2 wheel section to the Trikes in 2011 I read a gazillion posts on oil temperature, burning up engines and replacing stock oil coolers with multi-row, fan assisted super-duper heavy duty industrial strength oil coolers. This trend was closely followed by FANS! Big fans, small fans, quarter sized high rpm fans, automatic fans, parade fans, you name it.

I bit and changed out my air temp gage with an oil temp. Spent the next months riding with 1 eye on the road, the other on the oil temp gage. In traffic, or stopped at a railroad crossing in 100+ temps, my oil temp hit just over 300*. Usually cooled down when I got going to the 200's. Considering the thermal breakdown of Synthetic oil is over 400* all that worrying was for nothing. When I traded the 09 and 11 trikes the last thing I would ever do again is add an oil temp gage. Now, I look at the scenery, see the sights, smell the smells and don't worry about oil temperature. I've owned 8 or 9 Harleys, most made it to 60 or 70 thousand miles before I traded it for bigger better faster newer. Never had a toasted engine, never had any oil problems.
