Here on this forum as on many others engine oil is a topic of intense discussion. What brand, what kind - dino or syn, etc. On my initial 1k mile service I changed to Amsoil full synthetic - 20w50 in the engine. Then at the 5k service and again at the 10k service I sent oil samples for evaluation. The results speak for themselves. As you can see the 5k service was in August and the 10k in October - the hottest period of the year. In fact in mid-October in Texas the air temp reached 104 degrees! My oil temp (yes I have oil temp displayed on my Dakota Digital gauges) never exceeded 215 degrees and my trike is bone stock except for a few 'creature comforts' - nothing done to impact performance or engine temps. I do think other brand oils would have performed well also but I am a firm believer in full synthetic in my TG.TG oil analysis.jpg

I'd say, that you got a good lab result..
I'm an oil changeOHLIC,
I change my oil so often in my bike, that I stopped worrying about what brand oil to use, as long as it motorcycle approved oil..
I change oil and filter in my Goldwing every 2,000 miles

Hey Jerry,

Good report.

Gotta question for you...on the report it is listed as a 117 CI .

Is that a typo, or do you have something special going on with your TG?

I hope you see that copper PPM down closer to normal range on your next oil change.

I've pulled maybe thousands of oil samples in my 25 yrs of being a offshore mechanic. Wear metal is common with a new engine but it should decrease to normal levels within several oil changes.

The oil drain is not the ideal place to pull a sample from. Using a vacuum pump like they sell with new tubing each sample is recommended. "Same kind of pump I used when a mechanic."

The tubing should be inserted to within and inch or so above the bottom of the crankcase and the sample should be taken quickly as possible after shutting a warmed up engine down. You will have your best true results doing it this way.

I know most people pull the sample from the drain after about half the oil has drained out and that works.
I was just putting in my .02 in about oil sampling.

I would think the copper would come way down next oil change. Thanks for the info about best way to draw a sample.

I'm an oilchangeOHLIC, I change my oil and filter, very often, (usually @ 2,000 miles) I always replace, with a new filter as well. (My owner's manual, reads to change the O/F every 8,000 miles o_O) Never would I ever go 8,000 between changes.... I know it's really a waste of oil, BUT I like the "good" feel'nnnnnnn I get, :cool:when I know that Fresh, Clean Oil is splash'nnnn around in my motor. Especially when I'm cruise'nnnn the highway, on a long trip.... It's so easy to change that oil and filter, and it just make(s) me feel real good, that I'm baby'nnnn my Honda Goldwing...... 78,xxxx miles w/o problems..
(she's in hibernation now as we speak till April 1st )

How do you get a tube into the crankcase of an M8 motor? I don't know of any access to the crankcase from the top.
