Not going in Gear???????

While up @ Americade this past week I was pulling out onto the highway and it did,nt go in to first , so I dropped it down and still was'nt going into gear it seemed like I was in neutral, but the indicator light was.nt showing that. I pulled over and the bike would roll in any gear, and I could select Neutral and the light would come on. any suggestions this is on a 2004 H.D. Ultra with Hannigan kit, I had the Trike towed back to Buffalo today. Any suggestions???????

remote but trans sprocket might of come off, but you should hear alot of noise if that did. Clutch as John says is a good place to look first.

Check the easy things first -- final drive belt. You can see the trans sprocket/pulley from underneath when you look at the belt. Then check the primary drive chain through the adjustment window. If primary & final drives are ok, then pull the primary case cover & have a look at the clutch & engine compensator sprocket. In those are ok, then the only thing left is the transmission.

I am sorry , I thought he had a Gold Wing. So yes there are a lot of extra moving parts. Good point. Can you hear the clunk of parts moving when you shift? does it feel like the clutch lever is doing something?

Check the easy things first -- if it doesn't move in 1st, try second & third. If you don't get the normal "Harley clunk" when you shift into one of these gears, check primary chain, compensator Sprocket & clutch. If these check out, leave the trans in gear & with engine off, with proper safety measures, jack up one rear wheel & see if it'll turn. If it does, check final drive belt. You can see the trans sprocket/pulley from underneath when you look at the belt & check it's adjustment. See if the belt moves when the wheel is turned. If it doesn't, there's something messed up in the rear end & it's time to see your friendly Hannigan dealer unless it's something obvious like an axle that's disconnected.

Yes sounds like a mechanical disconnect from rear of motor to rear wheel. Could be very simple . QUESTION is , you rode bike home no problem. You parked it . When you went to move it it stopped/ would not go OR you where riding someplace and all of a sudden it would not move. any noise you can remember? just reread the story so you were riding and stopped and all of sudden it was dead in the water. Still sounds like something let go. Let us know what you find . Do what N.M says start with turning rear wheels.

What I did first when I got it jacked up was to try to turn wheel,in gear, it would'nt turn. I then put it in Neautral and spun the wheel, belt and everything turned fine. I then engaged the clutch by pulling in the clutch lever & tie-wrapping it to handle bar and taking out of neautral, again everything turned fine. I did'nt want to pull any covers in Lake George cause I did'nt have alot of tools and my service manual. Plus now I've settled down a bit and can focus on the problems ahead. I did talk to John tonight and the surgery on his wife went well, so thats a blessing, now we have to keep the prayers coming for her till she's up & jumping about. Got to be the clutch... Last test. Jack and secure the rear wheels off the ground. Only need to be a few inches. Make sure it can't fall off the blocks. Start the bike put it in gear and let out the clutch out , I bet the rear wheels spin with no load. Don't know how to replace a Harley clutch but can't be that hard . The wing clutch it a b&*## because of the shaft drive

Well it's narrowed down to rear sprocket that bolts to hub, bolts either backed out or sheered off. Talked to Hannigan and there shipping all parts to complete the job hopefully. Still talking with them on everything related to this. Will keep you posted.

Too bad we couldn't fig it out at Americade, Might have found one at the Hannigan tent. well sounds like an easier fix than the clutch

It,s going to be a bit more then just putting bolts in, Hannigan's people said it takes them at least 4 1/2 hours to do something like this, I believe the axles have to be pulled back and part of suspension dropped, will have to see what parts are sent.

I think the hord part is getting the old bolts out.
