My husband, my Hero

This is about a hero I know. Maybe not to anyone else, but he did save the life or serious injury to himself and his fellow passenger.

My friend was taking me up the street to pick up my vehicle and as we were pulling out of the driveway, I saw my husband's plane coming in for a landing. I knew he had his lawyer on board and they were coming back from a meeting in Md. Only, he wasn't landing, just circling the airport. I told my friend that I thought that was strange, but not to question my husband, we went ahead down the road to pick up my car. As I was getting my car, I again saw the plane circling the garage where we were. I knew something was amiss. Then I heard the ambulances, police cars and fire trucks passing by on the highway going towards the airport.

I just knew it was about him. As I passed the airport, sure enough all the emergency vehicles were out by the runway. I saw the plane take a low pass like he was going to land, but then pulled up. I turned into the airport road only to have a police officer stop me. I told him that was my husband up there and he immediately gave me an escort to the terminal. I saw right away what was up or I should say not down. The front landing gear wasn't down. For sure was not going to be pretty.
He was circling to burn off fuel. Meanwhile, here comes the Air ambulance helicopter landing mid field. Everyone was hugging me and I could only say, if anyone can do this, George can. After several passes he radioed that he is ready and tells them what he was going to do. He was going to cut the engines right before landing and glide in.

Standing there watching him, I was very scared. He brought that plane down, cut the engines, gently touched with the back wheels and then the front of the plane hit the runway, spun around as he radioed......WE ARE OK!! Everyone clapped. He and his lawyer were out of the plane in seconds. They rushed them up to the terminal, as George jumps out of the truck, whips the sweat off his brow and said......Nothing to it........

What a guy!!!!

OH MY GOODNESS!!!! Joan, just reading that I have tears running down my cheeks!!! I can't imagine how you felt standing there watching and waiting, except I am sure you were praying constantly. Give George a hug from me and tell him I am so thankful he is safe. He's one heck of a pilot, for sure!

Joan: PLEASE tell George, that as a pilot myself, someday I would like to shake his hand. My similar incident changed my life. I had to make a youthful course correction, from flying jets to sailing on Merchant Marine ships. They don't let you fly jets with spinal fusions. He's a better pilot than I was. God Bless!

Great job! We're all so proud of the way he handled that! It must have been a terrifying, stomach-turning moment for you! Oh Joan! Happy to know that you are both OK. I love happy endings!

Dang talk about a thriller, glad it worked out. He must be one heck of a pilot to stay that cool and set it down without incident.

Really glad he is okay. After reading this on FB, and knowing George and passenger were okay, I got to thinking about last year at the rally when you were telling me, Ron and a few others standing around, about the first time you went up with him. :)

I was out shopping and this was the very first thing that John told me when I walked in the door . . . we're both so grateful that George (and you) are both all right!! Congrats on his cool head in a crisis, and props to you for knowing you needed to be there!

Lots of hugs to you - see you in MV in a few months!!

Congratulations George on a truly professional job, glad your both ok. The minor damage on that good looking Piper looks like it might buy 4 or 5 new trikes though.
SEL for 30+

Now that George is able to talk about it, he said that he told Jesse Johnson, his passenger, that if he couldn't get the gear down, they would have to crash land. He said WHAT??? George then said," don't worry Jesse, I won't hurt a hair on your head, I guarantee it." "But I hate to see what the hell I'm going to do my plane. "

Probably about 6 trikes, brand new...

Wow!... That is amazing and props to George for keeping a cool head and gettin' down safely. He must be a very talented pilot...
Joan.. I have a question that I hope is not out of line and I think some other people not familiar with aircraft may be wondering also. And I have no clue,, just very curious about this stuff. Can you tell us what a propeller for a sweet plane like that costs to replace? You don't have to answer of course and I mean no offense..Just interested in the mechanicals of it!..Thanks!!!

Joan from one pilot to another, GREAT job George. Just what we train for. By the book landing. Great pilots do not let problems ruin the day as so often happens out there. Proud to know a great pilot like George.

W O W just W O W ! for once I am speech less . I can't imagine being in the plane as a passenger let a lone a pilot or knowing the person piloting the plane let alone being my spouse. I was reading and trying to read ahead, I almost just jumped to the end but I controlled my self saying I hope the ending is a good one .

I really don't know what just the props cost, but I Can tell you that since the props hit, we have to replace both engines AND the props , FAA Regulations. That is probably almost as much as buying the whole plane.

Yea Joan the FAA gets cranky about the crankshaft possibly being damaged even though George shut the engines down to prevent that. I bet at the very least they will require a complete tear down and inspection. Then you might a well zero time the engines. GOOD LUCK, hope your FSDO guy is able to be worked with.

Joan...Thanks for that info..I also didnt realize all the other regs involved! I am just glad your Hero did what he needed to do. Thanks!!!

GREAT Job......Super Glad They were OK.....I love Stories like this with perfect endings....."HERO", Yes, Totally and Definetly.....ThumbUp
