Motor Trike Solid Spyder?? Driveshaft replacement

I have a 2003 Wing with an older solid axle motor trike Spyder? Model (tiny trunk opening with hidden hinges and oem unlock method).

Can the newest style drive shaft be installed without loosening/moving/removing the rear end?

I have the original style with the gl1500 front half and spring loaded for easy removal.

I don't see any springs on the picture for the new driveshaft assembly.

Motor Trike seems to go home early on Friday so I'll have to call from work during lunch next week.

Yes Bob. I have installed two of the new drive shafts on kits just like yours.

There is a spring very similar to what you have now. Also, the new shaft is keyed so the splines will only line up one way. You will install the new shaft in reverse order from removing the old one.

Thanks!

Great to know it's a "relatively" easy swap. :pepper:

I'll probably order one next week just to be safe. I have no desire to be stranded or worse after the shaft/ujoints give way!

Hey Bob, this thread might interest you. Steve has an '05 so your set up will be the same drive shaft when you get the new one in. He says the 90 degree Zert grease adapter works well...

Good tip gold rush. I'll order that once I get a hold of motor trike.

Did someone post that the new shafts are/were somewhere around $150?

That sounds about right but it has been over a year since I did the last upgrade. They are the only source so we pay what we must.. :AGGHH::AGGHH:

Thats strange, I have the gen 3 drive shaft (green) but the zerk for the front u joint is in the center of the ujoint not on an end cap.

So i must have a 3.1, or you do

When did you get your Gen 3 drive shaft? The latest one I've seen was bought from Motor Trike about two months ago. It was exactly like the one I put on my '06 two years ago. Sounds like Motor Trike is using different front U-Joints depending on availability. Might be something prospective buyers might want to specify during ordering. :xszpv: :xszpv:

We'll apparently 2/3 of the shaft assembly parts are "due any day now" at Motor Trike and I'm waiting on prices from my local dealer. MT was probably closed by the time they tried to call back...

Guess I have time to loosen the frozen/loctited heim joints and find out where the mystery wires go while I wait for ordering/receiving drive shaft parts...

That was close to the time I got mine. As I recall there was quite a back log then so maybe they installed alternate U-Joints then. I've installed a couple since and they were as described. A friend of mine had his '05 converted to a Razor kit a couple months ago and his is the same as what I showed.
