Moly or bearing grease for U-Joints???

Heres what I use on my driveshaft joints. Been using if for years. On the driveshaft splines I use what Honda recommends.
 
Schaffer waterproof sticky stuff. Or any Marine grease. My quad has a bizilion grease fittings, so waterproofing is a must.
 
Do any of you that use MOLY grease for your driveshaft splines, also use the same "Moly" grease for your U-joints??

Or do you use a lighter grease for the U-joints?

This can be confusing, but it appears Hondas' Service Manuals use a generic page when it comes to chemicals. The chemical page is found behind the Table of Context page. It shows 2 Moly's a paste and a grease. However, the only MOLY used on a GL1800 is MolyKote Br-2 plus. I'm sure very few readers have it. Many might have tubes of Moly 60 sold by Honda dealers and shown on their chemical page, but, according to Honda's Service manual, that grease is not intended to be used anywhere on a GL1800. Finding a page where they actual call for it's use has thus far not been found.

I use MolyKote Br-2 plus as Honda calls for it in their service manual. I use it when doing transmission repair lubing main, and rod bearings, on some internal and external reverse parts, and lubing drive shaft splines.

On the chemical page where Moly 60 is shown, they also show MolyKote G-n2 as a substitute. If I recall G-n2 is a lube intended for plastic and not metal. Moly 60 could be the same, so unless the tube says something else, its best to not confuse Moly 60 as a metal lubericant. I do have a tube of Moly 60 paste but have never read the tube or used it.

As for U-joint grease. Back in the 70's grease guns were full of common grease used to lube suspension parts. The same guns were used to grease u-joints. However, now it's more confusing. There are several choices and often their containers have warning about not mixing them. So be cautious.

The rule of thumb I was always taught in all my auto shop courses was ... never use a chemical unless it can be justified.

Below is a picture of how I order in my MolyKote Br-2. I have to order mine off the internet. I've never found it on a shelf anywhere in my greater city area (Tampa). This city is to small for such and is also why very few will have this grease.

My worldly experience has taught me that any grease on a regular basis is better than none!

If one wants to extend the greasing interval beyond the original manufacturer's spec, synthetic is the only way to go. There are many other positive reasons to use a synthetic, but time nor space allow the full discussion.

If one is "religious" in keeping to the manufacturer's lube schedule, a moly/dino/conventional grease probably works just as well...
 
ok now im just as confsed as i was...

I use valoline moly for the splines and Mobil 1 synthetic for the U-joints.

Opps ... sorry ... I was living in the 2-whld world and forgot this is a trike forum. When it comes to drive shafts on a trike, the trike manufacture is the ones to consult for proper lubing of their drive shaft. Sometimes that info is printed in a trike's Owner's Manual.

Correct... I called Motortrike, and they say automotive MOLY for splines AND in the u-joints.

Mine is coming off this weekend for regreasing!!!

Glad to hear you are inspecting and lubing as needed. When you check the slip joint splines, if you find something like this, repair is needed. Be sure to clean them for a good inspection, and then lube them with the Moly MotorTrike calls for.
