How Hard Can You Run A Trike

Don't intend to sound dumb but after a 1800 GW has been triked will it handle 80-85 mph cruising without getting hot? I seldom run that fast but depending where I'm at sometimes I do to keep from being run over

The engine is liquid cooled, so I would say no problem.

I was in Texas in an area with the 85 mph speed limit. I put the cruise on 80 for awhile and no problems other than co-rider getting beat up by turbulent air from semi's. We didn't stay on the big road for long. Trike didn't seem to have any problems at all; well, other than watching the gas gauge drop like a rock. :AGGHH:

Yup, they suck up gas very quickly above 75mph. Major highway speeds are 75 mph and interstates down here are 80 mph away from populated areas so we get to test that higher speed quite often. There is no doubt you can cruse as fast as legally allowed with absolutely no concern. :xszpv: :xszpv:

93 mph

On a 2006 gl 1800, 2010 roadsmith conversion.
2012 - I'll admit to doing 93mph on a long straight stretch of Texas road with almost zero traffic. I did 93 because my external GPS told me that equated to 90 actual. I took it up to a little over 100 but that felt uncomfortable due to the wind so I dropped back. Held that speed for several miles until my gas gauge shocked me back to my senses and I realized I was no longer a macho and stupid 18.

The upshot: The trike didn't care how fast it went as long as I was willing to feed it gas. No overheating, no wobbles, but glad I had that Roadsmith auxiliary gas!

Road mine across the Mojave at 85 all day in 113 degree heat. The only time the temp guage climbed to the 3/4 mark was going through downtown Vegas in bumper to bumper traffic in 109 degree heat.

Well that covers another ? I had before going to a trike. Its not if but when. Still on the fence if I want to sell my Stratoliner or keep it around to satisfy my speed fix every now and again after getting a trike

It probably isn't cost effective to keep the STRAT around just to ride once a month but I did it for several years. When I bought my '15 GL1800 the dealer actually gave me what the STRAT was worth so I took the offer. You can get the speed fix on a trike just like any other bike but you can't get that "kick in the pants" acceleration. :AGGHH: As the gray hairs have become more plentiful, the need for speed has gotten a bit less...... :xszpv: :xszpv:

I kept my Stratoliner because I thought I would need the 2wheel fix every now and then after I bought my Goldwing trike. Turns out I only rode 3-4 hundred miles in a little over a year. Most of the time I had to force myself to ride it because the trike was so much more relaxing to ride. This spring I found a 08 Venture/Hannigan trike that I liked so I sold the Strat and the GW to pay for the new trike and haven't regretted it a bit. But you got to do what feels right for you.
