Run Away Trike

We read a lot here about how we park our trikes when we walk away.

Some use the Velcro thingy around the front brake level, some park in 1st. gear,
some use the reverse......

BUT

Has anyone had their trike roll away while parked in neutral, at the gas pumps or down thier driveway???
Hopefully without damage.

I make a point of shutting mine off in gear unless I'm sitting on it.
It does not take much of a grade for it to roll.:AGGHH::AGGHH:

Never park/get off with the bike in neutral except in the garage when I'm working on it. Always leave in first gear and if any substantial grade then add the parking brake.

I had a Spyder roll down my driveway [60 ft] then continue another 100 ft till it stopped hitting a curb.. No damage except to my pride.. It was in neutral engine running and the park brake was set.. But like most things on my Spyder it [ the park brake] wasn't very reliable ..
I never make that mistake again.. With any Trike..
Theres a old saying.. A wise man learns by his Mistakes.. That is wrong.. A fool learns by his mistakes... A truly wise man learns by the mistakes of others..

Actually yes, it rolled about five feet into a parked car. No damage to either vehicle thank goodness. Parked the trike and left it in first gear or at least it was when I got off. Reanacted the crime with the wife and we believe she inadvertently stepped on the heel portion of the shifter and knocked it out of gear. She had no idea of what it did but lessen learned.

ran away trike

yes I did, pulled into carport. killed it and went in house for lunch. had left something on the trike and went to get it and the trike was gone, it had rolled out of the carport and maybe 50 ft. beyond. it only took 1 time I have never done it again. and this is the first time I have told any one ( even the wife ) this goes to show that TT forum makes a person bear his soul

I totally agree.

I clipped the front end of a junk older car at the filling station going around it and marked up my left-side fender on my Roadsmith trike by cutting in to short.

The owner of the car was just super understanding and was more worried about my trike then his car.

Went home, close the garage door and got the rubbing compound out to rub the bruise marks out.

Moral of the story: Do you think that stupid stunt made me a smarter rider, you bet.

We humans are supposed to be one of the smarter animals on earth,

and still life is a learning curve every day,

I'm glad no body was hurt.

Run away trike? Actually in my case it was more of a walk away. Stopped to pick up the mail and must of accidentally kicked it out of gear as I dismounted. The trike only rolled a few feet before stopping but as my terminal dumb-azz set in I attempted to run after it and with my dead feet promptly fell flat on my face. Casualties: trike = 0, me = skinned hands and nose. SNAFU!

Never happened to me on a bike but happened to me with my F350 crew cab. Stopped in the gas station for cigarettes back when I used to smoke. Came out and my truck was gone. I looked around and there my truck was across the street. It had rolled across 3 lanes of traffic and wound up between two packed cars against the curb. Could have been way worse.

Did you quit smoking because of that?

Not me i let mine roll, I figured it will stop sooner or later... Like any one who works on roofs will tell you, Even if it's his prize hammer that drops and rolls away... Never ever chase it....:D

not a trike but my son parked his s10 chevy truck in first gear on a small slope went into the gas station to get a pop came out though someone had stole it started looking around it had roll out in to the middle of the street Man he was embarrassed

I also had this happen parking my friends new 1965 2-door Chevy Bellair with standard transmission.
I ran to get some burgers, park it in his driveway went inside, a couple minutes the door bell rang, and was notified of a run-a-way car across the street, hitting the curbing and stopped.
I guess I thought I had it in gear, never, ever, forget that day.............:cxtv:

Maybe acute case of cranial malfunction.................

Just what the wife said earlier today. In slightly not as nice phrasing.
Met up with group in Torrington. While everyone else was getting gas, I pulls to side. Turned TG off and sat in neutral. Was level and not rolling. Then I heard a cell phone ring that someone dropped in parking lot. I jumped off to get it. All I heard was wife make noise like Tasmanian Devil. Apparently, trike started rolling. She slid forward and grabbed clutch and brake. I turn around and ask why she is yelling out nonsense. The spousal abuse directed at me hasn't abated yet.

Why would anyone park anywhere and leave their bike in neutral? Did you leave it idling?

I my case i was warming up the engine so i could check the engine oil.... And the parking brake release all by its lonesome....08 Spyder..... It was on the only level spot on my driveway, But i guess the engine vibrated just enough to roll it backwards...:gah:
