How Fast?

Personally, my trike will be lucky to EVER see 100. I don't see a need for it. I prefer to just cruise along. I am never in a hurry to get anyplace.....

I've gotten my TG up to 90mph. But that is under ideal conditions and with the wings of angels pushing me along.

I have to agree about the enjoyment of an easy ride, taking time and enjoying the scenery. But for almost 60 years now I have also enjoyed the thrill of spped and power. So while enjoying the fall colors, no traffic. and a limited access road near Fall Creek Falls in TN, I got the urge to push the trike on highway 111. What a rush! Now I am good to poke along with a wee bit of sudden acceleration from the stop lights :)
The reason for the post is to find out just how fast a stock triked Wing could go with windshild and Baker wings, riding two up. I reaize the 100 I saw was on the uncalibrated speedo(10% error or so).
A:)

I know someone with a 2008 Goldwing trike with CSC kit. She has (this isn't fiction) ridden her trike at 145 mph. And no, I was NOT on the back with her at the time. OMG!!

So she knows exactly what here speedometer error factor is, your friend should compare her '08 speedometer against a known accurate source. Unless she was way into/over red line rpm condition or has a very low ratio final drive 145 is not possible. Not saying it's not attainable with enough flat ground but one of these conditions had to exist. I seem to recall 142 is max on stock GL1800 at red line.

I've had my '06 to 110 (GPS indicated) on a test run and it is very stable so I don't doubt it could very well stay that way right to the top end.

88mph according to the GPS before she in the Admiral's seat noticed and thumped me hard on the helmet. She also has seen that the indicated speed on the speedometer is just under 5 mph faster than on the speedometer. I get 5 over the speed limit before she "asks" me to slow it down.
Alone on the trike I am usually on the curvey roads here in the Ozarks, fast is relative to the curves.

Gold Wing (1800) speedometer is off by approx. 7% So if you were reading 143 your actual was 133. There's something on the wing called a rev limiter which is going to limit you to around 130 tops.

I've seen 85 a couple of times passing on the Super Slab, trike was very stable, however can not say I was completely comfortable. I enjoy cruising more than going fast, 60 to 65 is a comfortable and enjoyable speed to me and my co-pilot.

An "indicated" 105 mph once....just to see if it would. It did and was still pulling pretty good. Doubt if I'll do it again though...I'm allergic to talks with Barney....

Lets just say that I could not afford the ticket I would have gotten had I got caught. I was keeping up to a Kawasaki 1600 on a flat road in the middle of nowhere. We left a few other bikes way behind. My Goldwing speedometer is accurate with a GPS. I now have a bigger tire up front 130x80 18. Lets say it is accurate at 80 , I was able to check it then , not sure what it is after 125.

Well I've been 200+ on a ZX14, 132 on my 05 Wing, I believe my trike has seen 80 maybe once, just don't feel the need, but I figure it will easily hit 120.

I just enjoy cruising and will NOT take my ride faster than what is either necessary OR the posted speed limit........anything else is looking for trouble. I did not spend that kind of money on my trike to waste it trying to be stupid.

I was cuttin across Wy on my 12 Roadsmith an had it indicate 114 on my gps...........still felt stable..................just need more power...........u never have enough power..........hisst

Like some others have posted, I also do the speed limit or 'slightly' above if I have to pass someone. I think the fastest I've done at present is 65 mph and that's plenty fast for me. I really enjoy a leasurily, laid back ride the best! ThumbUp

Ghost Wheels have been tested to 100mph. I took her to 105 once just for laughs. No problems, and I had lots of throttle left. She sounded like a clap of thunder too! I do the speed limit +/-. The fastest I have ever gone was in the early 70's on the back of a 750 Kawasaki at night on Industrial Road in Florence Kentucky; 135!

I drove a Nascar Sprint car at 150+ on the Homestead Race track. That where those kind of speeds belong. Just my opinion To many critters that may jump out at you.

I agree with you as well. If you got a trike and THINK that it's necessary to go as fast as possible, then you got the WRONG bike. Better rethink your priorities and, perhaps, get a different type of ride.
What's your hurry? But I have pushed this one to 90 just to see how it would handle if I need to run it there. Most of the time I am right at the speed limit.

I've had my trike to 160kms/hr (100mph) and had throttle left over. I really just wanted to see if it would do it with the conversion, is all. In my opinion, on three points, there was just way too much stuff happening too fast...sure does get the blood flowing though. I used to routinely do it on two wheels, but guess I growed up... just wanna cruise at road speeds anymore.

For me a "spirited" ride means cruising through the mountains or a slow ride along the beach. I don't see a need to test it at overly high speeds as I am not traveling fast enough to put myself in a situation where I would need to accelerate to over 100 mph. I'll go the OTHER way with the throttle and slow down LONG before that would ever happen.

No hurry here, but it is nice to know if the trike gets squirelly at a higher speed. For those who dont like a spirited ride, a Moped might fill the bill
Out here in the Wild West, the freeway speed limit thru town is 65, which means everyone is doing 70 to 75. Outside of town, the speed limit is 75, which means 80 to 85.
Anything under 75 and you will have semi's crawling up your tail pipe and blowing you off the road as they go by you, and you will also be causing a traffic jam.
A Wingers origional post was just curious about top speeds, not about what was safe or not safe, which varies by rider and conditions. Many riders, specially those on a big ol' Wing, are very comfortable at 80 to 85 mph, which is a very common speed here and very safe to do on many roads. I ride with a Bud on a Honda VTX 1800 that has the need to decompress sometimes, and disappears over the horizen, then waits for me down the road a ways. Even at 85 or 90 it takes me a while to catch up to him on my TG.
His choice, his comfort zone. I think at sometimes in our lives, we have all had to the urge to push the envelope from the first time we started driving cars or riding bikes, and some still do, but it dosn't mean they are unsafe or dangerous. It's just because you can and your ride is capable of it. Your choice, your comfort zone. No judgements.

Dont worry Gold Rush... Never any judgements on my part!! We all just do what we are comfortable with, and that's the way it should be.
