What can I say when I lived in northern Calif. I was spokesperson for Bay area ABATE I think that helmets are dangerous and should be outlawed, just like seatbelts. LOL

Helmet types are a matter of personal choice. All DOT and/or Snell rated helmets are far better than none in my opinion. I wear full face, flip front helmets. I also have a 3/4 helmet with a face shield that I bought on a closeout just to see how I liked it. I feel naked with it on but that's just me.

Those modular helmets are nice aren't they Ben?

I really enjoy mine during cold weather runs... have you noticed the disclaimer? Says it is not designed to give chin protection.

I hear that! My dad used to rail against the seatbelts as unsafe too. He said that if his car was going over a cliff he would have no chance of jumping out. Of course, he was absolutely right!

As stated the debate is not the safety or not of the devise, but your right as an adult to make the choice. I am a law enforcement officer and I have seen them dead with and without a helmet. I know of at least 2 that probably would be alive had they had one on. I have seen 3 that it did not matter. The bottom line is your right to choose. I will enforce the law because that is the way it is written. In Florida seatbelts manatory, over 21, helmets optional (with proof of insurance) like 10k of insurance will make a difference.

You got that one right. They've got cigarettes taxed to the point of costing 6 bucks a pack, but for those willing to paying the tax, the risk of cancer is just as great as it ever was.

They may say that, but when I had an unexpected dismount from the bike 3 years ago, I faceplanted. I was wearing an modular helmet that was destroyed completely. Not a scratch on my face, chin, head. No injury whatsoever above the waist. I swear by full-face/modular when on 2 wheels, but the half helmet is my choice on the trike.

I would have to agree ht... and glad you came out hairy side up.

I too love my modular. Put a black shield on it so I can wear my specs and actually see where i'm going.

No experience with face plants with the modular but thought it to be funny they add that disclaimer. Now something we, who own modulars, have done or will admit to.. ever flip yours up to talk to someone and just as soon as you turn your head the darn thing comes crashing back down and locks? I've done this several times because it didn't lock in the upright position... darned embarrassing.

Will the issue of mandatory helmet laws ever go away? Probably not...:Wrong: Personally, I'm against them..., always have been and always will be. I believe that it should be the riders choice.

I encourage all of you to read the press release from the Motorcycle Riders Foundation that outlines the NTSB's efforts. (You can find the release at http://www.mrf.org/2010/news_release/10NR33.htm.) Join the MRF and help fight this unprecedented attack on motorcycling freedoms. Riding a motorcycle is not a hobby-- it's a lifestyle that is worth of protecting.

Support your states A.B.A.T.E. organizations as well. DO I HEAR AN AMEN?

Well said Daydreamer, it is a matter of choice. We are adults and should have the choice. In the area of minor children I beleive the helmet law should be mandatory. We should protect them in every way.
