Riding a Trike makes me feel safer, which is more of a false security. I have a half helmet and a 3/4 helmet with face shield. Does anyone here wear a full face while riding a trike? If so, do you wear it all the time or just on long trips. I have tried every kind of full face, but just hate that closed in feeling. GIves me the creeps, plus they are heavy and hurt my neck. But going on a long trip, I do worry. So what do YOU wear?

I too feel safer on the trike. I normally wear a half helmet with goggles except when it cold out (the back of my neck gets COLD!).
Then I wear a NOLAN N102 full helmet with chin guard and bluetooth com system. Seems to work out well.

I use a half helmet for the most part IHP

I do own a full face but normally wear it only during the colder days as said. They are a little heavier unless you purchase something like a light weight Shoei or other name brand full face or you are faced with a 4 pound model.

Personally I like and use convertible or modular type helmet like this. You can push a button just under the chin and the face will flip up like wearing a 3/4 helmet. They can be a bit pricey but worth looking at.

Harley has this model, which is the one I use, but it too is a little heavy. It is not made by Harley and can be found without the HD design for about half the price.

C wears a half helmet but does own a 3/4 for the cooler weather which is just fine she says as long as she can wear neck and chin stockings. She doesn't like the full face models at all but it is not the design, just the added weight.

Hello Iron..

Have you tried the Roof Boxer helmets or the new Shark helmets? They slide all the way over thus giving you the open face but also the side protection. There is also the Airoh TR1 helmets which you can take the mouth piece off if you wish.

Hope this helps with your dilemma;)

I wear a half-helmet almost all the time, with the usual zip-off ear covers, along with a Buff when the weather is cooler.

I'd like to have a full-face helmet for cooler weather, but if I got one, I'd want one of the Shoei models, as Reksul mentioned, and it seems like a lot of money to spend for something I'd use maybe one or two months of the year at most--being in Florida, that is.

I know some of you will yell at me but I don't like to wear a helmet at all.

When I am forced to, I wear a half helmet. Don't feel comfortable with the full face even though I think they are safer?.

I confess..... Bryan, I'm with you 100% on your statements here!. Guess I'm a bad girl!

Here's another confession. The Chief and I just came back from a ride to the beach, and I wore no helmet. But I USUALLY do wear one, so don't fuss at me!

Nobody fussing, LOL!!! I tried it when I was in Florida, but just feel too naked. WHen you come from a helmet state, it is just habit. I have been bad and shaken off a lot of the gear, going in my short sleeves on warm days. WOuldn't do that for anything when I was on two wheels. By the way, welcome back JuJu!!!! Missed you.

Thanks, IHP--and I'm happy to BE back!

I was such an ATGATT girl for ages--I NEVER rode my two-wheeled bike without full gear, including helmet, jacket (though it was a mesh jacket with body armor in summer), gloves (shorties in summer), jeans, and boots. (The only thing I never owned were chaps.) But since I've been on the trike, I, too, have shed the jacket and sometimes the helmet on hot summer days. You DO feel naked at first, but it's so nice NOT to arrive at your destination all hot and sticky, and with your hair flattened and matted with perspiration (ewww--I know--TMI :D). And the wind in your hair--just wonderful. But I still ride in long jeans, boots, and gloves--I don't care how hot it gets.

Half helmet on the Harley, used to be the same on Her Purpleness until we got an intercom system. the plastic "ears" for the speakers only sort of worked, so we got 3/4 helmets. Sound is a lot better. Occasionally helmetless when in free-choice states.

Vega Summit XPV flip-front helmet all the time.

I don't like the wind in my face (or scorching my skin) and I like the feeling of protection.

I wear my 1/2 helmet 99.9% of the time. The rest of the time my modular when it rains. I have only caught myself twice without it. I believe as an adult it should be your own choice. Ted

I wear a full face Nolan helmet & my wife wears a Nolan Tourer with full visor, for racing we must use full face helmets.----- HOWEVER---- & this should get the manufacturers wound up, I contend that the full face helmet is perhaps one of the worlds most dangerous inventions ever. There you are I've gone & said it ! :D

I wear a 3/4 helmet with the face shield. I wear it with the face shield up when riding on city streets. I also have a modular helmet but only wear it when the weather is cooler. The modular is hot and heavy both of which I do not like.

Helmet or no Helmet. It's down to personal choice or the State or country you reside in. I joke about not wearing one but..... I feel I need the safety net. Anyway when my eyes are behind the dark visor I can glance at the pretty ladies without getting caught :p:blush:

I wear 3/4 helmuts...one is HD Jet II w/face shie..heavy, neck hurts after long ride. Second helmut I just bought HD kevlar w/face shield...lighweight and used it on 1,161 miler with no aches.

Well, wife & I have gone from the full face to the 3/4 helmets, and I also wear the 1/2 helmet on occasion. Full face is now worn mainl;y in the Fall season. I will say we were fortunate when we were rear ended one time that we had our full face helmets on, and when I came back and smashed the front of my wifes helmet with the back of mine, her chinbar took the blunt of the impact. So in that icase, the full faced one did it's job. Also remember that you should replace your helmet every 3 to 5 years. Tis......

My internet has been crashing so much that I haven't had a chance to reply.
I figure that hitting the pavement will be the same off the trike as the bike, so I dress accordingly. Also I don't often have to deal with the high temperatures that many of you do. I wear a full face helmet all the time. I have a nice light Arai one with lots of vents and often I ride with my visor open a bit to enjoy the smells :). Both help with that closed in feeling. I also have an HJC modular and it is ok but you can't really ride with it open because the front section ends up catching the wind so much.

Until this year I always wore a modular full face helmet - it was all I owned! I felt it was more secure, but it could get hot and heavy really fast. Not very comfortable when it gets humid here. I usually ended up riding with the visor open, so figured I'd start looking for something "open faced".

This year I bought a 3/4 helmet, but I don't feel as safe with it as I thought I would. I can easily picture losing my face if I had an accident (I have a very vivid imagination)! Also, the one I got has a snap-on visor - kind of a pain for those "sudden" rain times!! I think I'd prefer one with the open/shut visor, but I haven't bothered trying any on yet because I just don't have the money right now.

So, when hubby's back to work and the bills are caught up, looks like I'll be on the hunt for a new one too! ;)

I wear a half helmet 90% of the time. When it gets cool I put on the neck curtin for added warmth. If it's in the 30s, I use the 3/4 helmet. Colder than that...I don't ride.

I've tried the full face several times, but I can't tolerate the "closed in" feeling. I'm not normally claustrophobic, but the full face nearly sends me into a panic.
