Group Riding

Phu Cat, how big was that trike?? One of those big V8 monsters?? :AGGHH:

Was it directly behind you or in the center of the lane?

I haven't rode that often with a trike behind me, but I don't remember ever having a problem seeing the bikes behind it.

My Tri Glide is about 16 inches wider then an Ultra, but that width is down really low - about the same heigth as the saddlebags so it shouldn't obstruct too much.

Thanks guys, lot of good comments. We went back to Myrtle Beach Christmas day for a couple weeks. We went by the bar and us and the owner were the only ones there. I guess this guy told some what he had said as I had not said anything to anyone. The owner said he had a number of people tell him. He was pi$$ed and told this guy that he did not tell anyone in the rides anything. This guy is a jerk it seams, he tried to pick a fight with one of the guys that is much older than he is. The owner told him he would kick his a$$. He still comes in once in a while but the owner doesn't speak to him. This is an informal ride with no rules. I like to ride near the rear so I can see all the bikes and watch whats going on. I don't know the area as well as everyone as they are all locals and I am not, don't want get lost so I don't ride dead last. I am not aware of anyone that cares where I ride. The last ride we went on some two wheelers motioned me to go a head of them. All is well. These are real nice people, one couple that lives on the Inter Coastal Waterway has a setup at his place for the RV, water, power and sewer. They said we could stay at their place as much as we like. I don't think we will but the offer sure was nice. Again thanks for all the good input, I am in agreement with what you all are saying.

Lakeman,
Great, glad to hear you let it roll off your back. And I agree with you 100%, in that of all the places we have been to for motorcycle events, Myrtle Beach locals really know what hospitality means. I have never felt so welcome by the locals anywhere else. Sure, some places at each event we go to go out of their way but down there, they all seemed to do it. Maybe it's the economy down there. I know locals personally that live in the town of another event we attend and they told us the attitude is much different from the majority. I don't care. If you treat me right I treat you right.

And as 10rhrk stated, two abreast is dangerous, very dangerous, unless you have years of experience with the guy next to you and the situation is perfect for it, but by "side" of course I meant getting naughty and riding abreast in two lanes. Something else I would never do unless the opportunity presented itself.

I suggest you try down Murrells Inlet (Murrells Inlet SC, Fishing Village, Salt Marsh Nature Preserve, Seafood Capital of South Carolina). Not only is it a real nice ride to do from top to bottom but there are places for RVs there and a lot of really nice waterfront restaurants and bars. It was my favorite area down there. If you want the hustle and bustle go up to North Myrtle to the Hard Rock Cafe. Me, I like it slower in the inlet.

Anyway, good luck and keep the rubber side down, oh wait, does that even apply anymore?

Lakeman,
Great minds think alike. Love it down there. I bet I know the bar too, not the name (it's been a while) but I remember it having a black and white checkered board tile floor with skid marks on it from when a car drove through the wall, and after repairs they decided the skid marks gave the place character so they left them. My favorites though were the two places that have decks right on the water.

Except for the mosquitoes being as big as our Trikes, I could live down there.

Been in 2 side patch clubs. In the first club I was the only trike and would ride at the rear. The second club, where at one time we had more trikes than bikes the trikes would always be in the front. Last summer ended my love of riding in large groups. Did 2500 mile plus ride through Europe, I led most of the way but we had situations where we lost the group formation. One day I'm told to speed the group up as some of the bikes wanted a bit more speed, but I kept the group together. Then the next night I'm told that I was going to fast and the group stretched out and the split. From my experience if the group rides within legal speed limits you can keep the group formation, especially on unfamiliar roads and for us in the UK riding on the other side of the road in Europe. I am no longer in a patch club and whilst I will do the occassional ride with my HOG Chapter will not do 1000’s of miles with a mixed trike/bike group again.

If Im on a trike or two wheels.. I always ride in the front..and you better keep up. I'm a pretty aggressive rider whither I'm on a sport bike, Screaming eagle 110 ultra, GL1800 trike or my Sport touring Yamaha.

I know where I'm going as I plan most of the trips and I like twisty roads or the long hauls.

I pretty much would have called the guy out on that B.S. with the trikes in the back. And then I would have found other to ride with that were not for some reason.. NOT THINKING WITH THEIR HEAD BEFORE OPENING THEIR MOUTHS! ThumbUp

when the wife and i were riding our ultra classic , i always lead the group on our little trips, now that we have a trike i'd rather be in the rear , but our little group insist me taking the lead , when there is somewhere we ride to and someone in the group knows how to get there better then me i ask them to lead but then they still put us in the middle cause there is usually someone else likes the rear so i don't argue, but thing about a trike you can ride it just about anywhere you want too , where you might not a 2 wheeler

I have rode now with three different groups, two different chapters of one riding club, which always wanted trikes in the back, I was riding a ultra classic at that time. Joined another riding club Last Tuesday, and rode on a group ride Saturday. I asked the Road Captain where he wanted me and my trike, he suggested anywhere you want. We ride staggered....doesn't matter to him, I rode fourth, second on the right since I parked four in line on arrival, and we all formed a line from our parking spot, except for the tailgunner, or last road captain. Enjoyed this group off all same brand bikes, also, all about the same ages. About 15 in this group....Rode about 60 miles, small ride in NC....

My wife and I like to do what we want when we want. To many rules in this world as there is. I don't need someone telling me where to ride, when to leave, and when to stop. Just doesn't sound like any fun at all.

I disagree to a certain extent. Yes, I love riding by myself most of the time. On occasion I do like riding with a group of friends - I think that's the whole idea of riding - being able to share fun times traveling with friends by bike to all parts of the country. I think it would get a bit boring without someone to see things with. And I also do a couple charity rides a year.
Don't like riding in a group of unknown riders though.

Thankfully we are free to ride our own type of ride.
