Ok the 2017 saga continues.Last year the left handle bar switch went wacko,the right cooling fan stopped working so it was replaced then in Oct of last year the right cooling stopped working 3 days before leaving for Daytona then started working the day before we left still stops some times.This past June the left front rotor would sometimes not release completely burning the rotor black in the process,so the caliper,rotor and rotor bolts were replaced.Had about a 1000 miles on my oil and trans oil change before my trip to Natural Bridge KY so i checked all the fluids pre ride and the trans was a little low.

So called the dealer for a appointment to have it checked for trans to primary migration.They topped it off and said ride about a 1000 miles then bring it back,yep 2 oz low so they top it off and put dye in the trans fluid tell me to put 5000 miles on it,checking it every 1000.So today getting ready for a long weekend trip and now i have an engine light on PO0522 and PO0523 open circuit,ARGH cant get in to service until next Tues.Got a hold of the tech i know and he said more than likely its a faulty oil sending unit,it shows oil pressure and the oil light goes out upon start up,he said it will be ok and if it blows up let HD put an engine in it.

Called HD Corp to tell them how unhappy i am and all the issues i have had with this bike and got the same old,we are sorry for the problems you are having with your product. Didn't expect any more than that but i got it off my chest. Told them that if Indian comes out with a factory trike this thing is history.Okay i'm done.

Steve, it seems strange it would throw a high and low code for the oil pressure

I dunno why they would not just replace the sender and give you peace of mind

My M8 thru a low code once, that said I talked to my service manager. His words were they had a bad batch of sensors during building the M8 engines and he had already warrantied a few

Good Luck;)

I know how you feel......Thats why my 17M8 is gone and i have a Slingshot now....

I have to go back every 8 hundred miles....And when i talked to Harley and said what if i were to drive cross country....They had an answer to that just stop at any Harley dealer on the way and the'll level the fluids out for you,N/C......And that was just one of their answers ....:mad:....

P/S....When i said to them what if i just ride it and the transmission burns out .....The answer you were told to bring it in every thousand miles to have it checked....So if you ride it over that , No warrteny if something happens.. And thats what my Lemon Law Lawyer said i would have to do to continue the case...Or park it till the case is settled....That could take a year, And i would have to be at all hearings depositions, And Court....Or all legal costs are on my dime.....So i worked out even-up trade for a new Slingshot..

Sorry for your trike issues. I’d be ranting too. Hope Harley gets yours sorted to your liking.

Rhino, What model slingshot and how do you like it? It has to be quite different but no doubt fun.

SL.......Taller windshield and the Slingshade top.... Its different alright , Its a hoot to ride and very tempting to go overboard on the curves, Still can't get use to the backup camera 'Little tight getting in and out...The Grandkids love to ride in it...

But like i said its not for every one, Very limited cargo space....And it rides very similar to my Ex Spyder Tail wagon the dog sensation .....Gas mileage is 30/31, With an almost 10 gal tank......Definitely gets everyones attention..... :shock:

I get the P0522 code once every 8 months (I've gotten 2). I never got the check engine light though. I talked to my chosen local HD dealer. My codes cleared and didn't return(for 8 months). He said he had seen it before & it was a fluke, but if I get it again, he would change the sensor.

I can't see why you would get a low & high voltage code at the same time?

Just got the codes today,rode it to work on Monday and Tuesday no engine light,sat in the garage,started it up today and engine light.Revs clean no limp mode,pulled both side covers looked at and checked all connections,pulled fairing nothing was loose or disconnected. Service guy said it could be one of 23 different things to check.May be a fluke have an appointment on Tuesday will keep ya posted.Pulled the main fuse to see if the engine light would clear,no dice.

Steve, follow this to read and clear your codes Read #8 note

Diagnostic Trouble Codes and TSM/TSSM codes through the Harley gauge cluster as well as a list of codes.

1- Turn Ignition switch to OFF & Run/Stop switch is to Run.

2- Push odometer reset button in & hold. For 2014 & newer touring models this will be the toggle switch on the left control mount.

3- Turn ignition switch to Ignition and release the odometer reset button. Background lighting should illuminate, speedometer needle should sweep its full range and indicator lamps (battery, security, low fuel, check engine and cruise) should illuminate. The word "diag" should then appear.

4 - Push the odometer reset button once and you will see the selection menu "PSSPt" with the first P flashing.

5 - Each letter represents an area of the diagnostics module. The module that is flashing is the one you are going to check. To move from one letter (module) to the next, you push the odometer reset button one time. (from P to S to SP to t and back to P, etc.)

P = ECM/ICM(Electronic Control Module)[EFI] /Ignition Control Module[Carbureted])

S = TSM/TSSM (Turn Signal/ Security Module)

SP = speedometer

T = tachometer

6 - To get the DTC within an area of diagnostics, push and hold the odometer reset button in for 5 seconds and release. If there are any DTC's the code will be displayed or the word "none" will appear if there are no DTC's. Push the odometer reset button again to view additional codes if they exist.

7 - Record the codes.

8 - If DTC's are not to be cleared, Press and release the odometer reset button. Part number of module will be displayed.

NOTE: To determine if a code is current or historic, clear the displayed code by pushing in and holding the odometer reset button ( longer than 5 seconds) until 'clear' comes up. Release the odometer reset button. Turn OFF the ignition switch. Run your bike and shut it down then recheck the DTC's again by repeating steps 1 to 9. If the code is current it will reappear.

9 - Press and release the odometer reset button to continue to the next module.

10 - Turn Ignition switch to OFF.

On models not equipped with a tachometer "No Rsp" will appear when the tachometer identifier is selected.

That run around with never ending problems with a Harley is why I don't own one anymore. I too hope Indian comes out with a trike but I'll probably need one before they do. So my choices are slim. Wife already rides a Spyder so know what they are all about and a conversion would leave me without a ride at all for who knows how long. Indian really needs to come out with a trike. That baby-boomer group will soon hit hard. I really don't want to go the finger pointing conversion route but looks like that's it. Or get a F3 Spyder and be done with it.

Just curious...why would you want the F3 Spyder instead of the RT or RT Limited?

Other than the oil venting problem with my 12, even running the 1/2 qt low, got no other complaints. As far as ever replacing it, a Honda trike is sounding more like the replacement. It’s a shame when your ride has to visit every other HD dealer on a trip to check the levels. For all of you that have a 15 tri with the oem water pump, make up a overheating story as the replacement system has been upgraded. They will not replace the pump under any recall, as it ain’t a recall. Only if it fails, and it will fail 500 miles into your trip.

Ok went to back the trike up and no reverse,pulled side cover reset button wont reset so maybe that is were the issue is going to call the dealership today to record this issue because the warranty runs out tomorrow.

Friend got the P0522 code on his six month old TG while at the D3W rally. Cleared it and did not come back. I got both 522 and 523 a couple weeks ago. Cleared and did not come back but took it in and they replaced the sensor / sending unit whatever it is called just because they could not find any other possible problem. When it throws both low voltage and high voltage at the same time I gotta suspect the sensor.

Good luck getting it all sorted.

My wife's 2016 had a bad problem with the battery not holding a charge. We replaced the battery and still it would die. I had it in and out of two different dealerships and they blamed the battery, the fuse, even my tender. But they said the bike had no issues.

Now I work for a major OEM car company and I know that corporate doesn't want to have to deal with noise from the dealership level.

So I literally searched google for the names of any internal high ranking people I could find at Harley. In about a day or so, I had the name of several including a Director of Dealer Support and I sent that person an email, venting about my solution.

The next day I get a response telling me to expect a call from my dealership. Then the dealership calls and they ask to pick up our trike.

They keep the trike for two weeks while they broke the electrical system down to find out the problem. Sure enough, after having it three days they replicated the problem. Then they began troubleshooting the problem.

Every two days I would receive a phone call from the general manager of the dealership with an update. And sure enough, they found the issue with the charging system after a little over a week.

They fixed the issue, gave us a new dual bike battery tender, and even replaced a complete set of dealer installed 3rd party LED lights that had been the root cause of the problem. Then they delivered the bike back to our house for my wife's inspection. And they did this all at no charge whatsoever.

In my discussions with the Corporate Director, they asked me not to release the name and internal email address of my contact. So I will not repeat it here.

But I can tell you that you can find this info if you search for "@harleydavidson.com". It will take some digging, but you will find email addresses within PR news releases as well as several financial sites (Dunn & Bradstreet) that will list email addresses of officers and officials.

Always try to go around the folks on the phone. Their job is to be a buffer between the people you really need to talk to and the public. Email is always the way to go.

I too hope Indian comes out with a trike but I'll probably need one before they do.

I would be afraid to buy an Indian now after what Polaris did with the Victory. In January of 2017 they announced that they were shutting down Victory because it was less profitable than Indian (which they purchased on 2011). They also said they would only make spare parts available for 10 years for any existing Victory bike.

Two people in our local riding group bought Victories in 2016 and were not happy to find out that they effectively had an expected lifespan of the next 10 years.

I often wonder if harley can screw things up bad enough to lose the faithful. Now if you're a harley guy you know nothing else will do. But there comes a time when you abuse your clientele enough they will go away. I was thinking the other day about what happened with cars. My father inlaw was as american as you can get. Served in army and airforce. He had Buicks forever. Look at pictures of my wife when she was a child. Always a Buick in the driveway. Well he had trouble with his Buick, only 2 years old. Traded for a 77 Skyhawk what a piece of crap. Back to the dealer 3 times cause it stopped running. Now this is a brand new car. Anyway always had a loaner for him. That was until the last time, didn't have one, gave him a ticket for a free rental. That was a mistake on their part. Got a rental Toyota. When he picked up his Buick went straight to the Toyota dealer and traded it in. My neighbor medal of honor ww 2 bought a new Caddy with the diesel, never would start. Traded it on a new Honda. Both of these guys said they never would have believed they would be driving a Japanese car, but they never bought another american car after that. So I guess It could happen.

My last 3 bikes were Harleys.......There will never be another Harley in my garage in my lifetime.....Its not the problems so much.....Its the way they Harley handled it.., I have a bunch of T shirts that i got as gifts from my Harley dealer and some from friends....And i will not wear them, And i will not give them away for someone else to wear, They are oil rags now...:mad:......And i'm not even getting into the crap they pulled on President Trump about tariffs.....:mad:

Have you checked/verified the battery condition and all associated connections?

Actually I wouldn't be afraid to buy a Victory even now. It's a good solid machine. And Honda doesn't support their older products passed 10 years as well. Nothing new at all there. At least that's what I've noticed. Your area might be different.

My Victory [Gunner] was as reliable as any Honda i ever had...And most Ex- Victory dealers have boat lodes of leftover parts at a heavy discount...

Just got back from a soggy ride home from KY,must be gremlins.Left the drive way Friday morning engine light on rode about 20 miles stopped for gas turned bike off filled up turned bike on no engine light:confused:.So off we went all weekend and it ran fine still gonna take it in tomorrow and have them look at it and check out the reverse. Looks like i will be buying the extended warranty after all.

A warranty, extended or otherwise, is a must these days. Makes no difference of brand. These computers are expensive to replace and many times that's the source of random problems.

And what surprises me is how many people buy a new bike and get a 3 year extended warranty and think they have 5 years of warranty.The extended warranty runs concurrent with the factory so it only extends it 1 year after the factory runs out.Just checked with my dealer and a 2 year warranty for my Tri is about 1500-2000 so that would give me a total of 4 years now that my factory warranty has run out.Hate to spend it but with this bike it may be a requirement.The service writer whom i have known for years asked me if there was anything else that was wrong since he was going to put it on this warranty claim. I have always said that your warranty is no better than the dealer that will honor it.

I guess it pays to have a ESP with a harley since they can't get anything right now a days, the old days they built them better than today, MHO only, but with coolant pumps puking anti freeze out, transmission oil going into primary, trunk latch on triglide not very good, all plastic piece of crap, ingnition switch not coming unlock if you lock it with a host of other things going on with harley, I just can't believe this is going on, union workers to boot, my my, what's next.

All for now Trampas

10 year plan

Oh I know. Had a 07 that the ECM went out in. Thought the bike was done for. Warehouse had zero. Dealer found one somewhere but took two weeks to get to them. That's the bike that got traded shortly after. Something took that ECM out and I know they didn't even look for that.:(
