Glass Packs on VTX

I have a triked out VTX1800 . So far have put a little over 18000 miles on it. Runs and handles great. I installed the B&B fuel manager .
Fuel mileage has never been great . A lot has to do with the extended exhaust pipes. It increased the back pressure, I went in and drilled out a 3/4 inch hole down through the center of each muffler. It did help the power , and the gas mileage somewhat.
I am thinking that if I install a pair of glass pack mufflers then the back pressure will go away.
Question is >>Who has doe this and what was the results.
Thanks

a couple years ago i pulled the baffles out of mine. i stripped them down to the metal baffle tube.
I then put 2 thicknesses of fiberglass mat around the tube and taped it in place with a few pieces of masking tape.
I then took some wood stove burner door seal ( TSC stock it) and spiraled it from one end of the tube to the other end and taped it in place with a few pieces of masking tape.
I slid em back in and it now sounds like an angry Harley lol

I am running Cobra Slip-Ons on my 1800 and mileage sucks. Pretty much a straight through pipe. Slightly baffled. Maybe I'll remove the baffles and see what happens. Just might be to dang loud.

I ran mine "straight thru" for a couple weeks----picked up 3-4 MPG---spent the savings at the ear doctor !! LOUD is the magic word !!

I originally got around 42 mpg on my VTX1800C, on two wheels. Triked now, it gets about 33 mpg, and with the Motortrike conversion, they put on what looks like "glasspaks". I can't believe, drilling out your exhaust will increase mileage much, ,but it can reduce your overall torque.

Just got back from a 1795 mile trip. The wife was running the trike with a KwikKamp trailer following up behind. The trailer weighs in at about 200lbs , plus another 100 + the wife crams in .
When we left heading to a rally in Kansas ( 350 mi) , she was getting 21 to 23 at 60 to 70 MPH. At about 300 miles she blew a muffler. seems the Honda folks just put 3 tack welds on each of theses mufflers. We were in a small town that had a tire 7 muffler shop. I purchased a 2.5 X 26 inch pair of glass packs, could not get them installed. . Made it to the rally .

Got some plumbing stuff from a local hardware store. Used plumbers tape to hang and pipe clamps to butt up. We headed out on Sunday. Had to stop and get them welded up. Rode with them like that for the past 1000 miles. Coming home we were hitting it at 65 to 80 using Ethanol. The gas mileage is now 28 to 29 MPG. Must also note that I installed a Bigbsy & Bones fuel management system a few years ago .
Also the wife reports that it is better to pass with. Noise level louder than it was but not as bad as a lot of Harleys
Now we are back in the land of real gas , and the trailer is put up .

It will be interesting to see what happens.

I get 27 MPG HOW COULD LOOSENING UP THE EXHAUST CAUSE LESS TOURQE ? scuse the caps

It gets technical, but from what I understand, these engines need a certain amount of back pressure to run properly.

You are right the engines do need some back pressure.Without (straight pipes) it you can burn up a engine. The old bikes had to increase the jet size. When the bikes are triked the extensions on the exhaust pipes increase the back pressure.
When I got our VTX triked it was dogged out. By drilling a one inch hole down through the middle I relieved some of the excess pressure. The glass packs did more. The ones I have , do have baffles pre installed. I also have the Bigbsy & Bones fuel management system. No back firing , and a big bump in performance & MPG. Good indicator is your plugs.

If proper mixture you have a nice tan plugs. White to lean , Black to rich.
