GL1500 Custom Home Build Trike - Pics

Re: Honda GoldWing Gl1500 Custom Built Trike

Well here comes my nickles worth lol
if you have the skill to do either go for it.
I would widen the fenders first then try the flairs
and see how they look on and off
personally i would of course do both if i could
individualism is that a word? Has got to start in trikes
pretty quick.
Look at the car industry at 50 feet who knows what brand it is lol

Re: Honda GoldWing Gl1500 Custom Built Trike

Skip....I played around a little with Photoshop to try and see what your fender would look like with a little widening and a slight flare. I'm not very good with Photoshop but maybe you can get an idea from it???

Re: Honda GoldWing Gl1500 Custom Built Trike

That looks great. Wish I could do that.
Can I use the Picture else where.
I'm about 1 hour from the Dragon on the TN side, haven't been there yet.

Re: Honda GoldWing Gl1500 Custom Built Trike

Flares look easier than cutting the fender down the middle . what happens to the tail light etc?

Re: Honda GoldWing Gl1500 Custom Built Trike

I think widening the fender + a small flair will look best. Just a personal thing, but I don't care for super big flairs. Adding the flair after opening up the wheel opening to match your bigger tires would also reinforce the edge of the opening. Back in the day, we used to flair wheel wells on our hot rods by brazing 1/2" or 3/4" EMT to the edge of the opening & leading it in -- for those of us that knew how to lead -- bondo for those who didn't. I wonder if you could use PVC for that with the fiberglass? PVC bends nicely if you warm it up.

Re: Honda GoldWing Gl1500 Custom Built Trike

If you cut it to the inside of the fender an added material between the tail light and the body (Rather than down the middle) you could save the tail lights. You could strengthen the body side by filling in most of the gap

Re: Honda GoldWing Gl1500 Custom Built Trike

Got the tail light cups filled.
Trimmed & sanded to shape this morning
Put 2 layers of 1.5oz mat for a firm surface to bodywork.
Also finished laying up the bumper area.
1st picture shows the roller ( one of many types )& the need to roll out the bubbles.
The bright lite area to the left bumper area had not been rolled out.
2nd pictures shows the glassing finished & time for the waiting game & post here.
Will still need to grind & glass the inside damaged area.

Looks good, Skip! How do you deal with all that 'glass dust? Makes me itch just thinking about it!!

NM

+1 Me too. I don't care how long a sleeve you wear or how you cover your head that dust finds its way into evey pore it feels like. :(

Re: Honda GoldWing Gl1500 Custom Built Trike

I worked on 18 wheeler cabs. (fiberglass). the first time I came home Honey washed my clothes in with the rest of my work clothes , I Itched when ever I wore anything that was washed in that load

Re: Honda GoldWing Gl1500 Custom Built Trike

If you rub your arms and neck down before being exposed to the fiberglass dust you don't itch and the dust showers away easily.

Re: Honda GoldWing Gl1500 Custom Built Trike

There is a cream you can use that washes off in the shower.
I take a cold then hot shower to open & close the pores.
Wash your clothe by them self's, & undress in the basement or you will have little white hair all over the place & will checking you head in the mirror.

Re: Honda GoldWing Gl1500 Custom Built Trike

That's good to know. Where do you get that cream? Body work supply places? Cat doesn't use much fiberglass & I guess I lucked out with the truck tractor cabs in only having to work on aluminum. 'Course, then have to deal with the zinc chromate primer. Been a while since I did truck work - may be something better out now that doesn't kill the lungs. That kinda tells how long it's been, huh? Respirators back then were a luxury & not mandated like today.

The hazards we were exposed to and did not think anything about it. We are the lucky ones.

After 18 years as an auto mech., working in fiberglass boat shop & all of the other thing that are now hazards to you, guess I'm lucky to still be alive. But then again I would still eat eggs.

The cream was white & supplied by the boat shop. Don't remember the name but it worked unless you sweated.
Maybe fiberglass supplier may have a lead on it.

Re: Honda GoldWing Gl1500 Custom Built Trike

That is coming along great . I am excited to see the finished product . Would love to see it close up and personal.

Re: Honda GoldWing Gl1500 Custom Built Trike

You certainly are multi-talented being able to do all the mechanical and body work. I have enjoyed following your progress and look forward to seeing the finished project.

Re: Honda GoldWing Gl1500 Custom Built Trike

Woo-Hoo! Looking real good!!!

Re: Honda GoldWing Gl1500 Custom Built Trike

WoW Skip I can't believe all the work you are doing. That wax job is great. Having made a few molds I can appreciate all the work that was involved to make it look that good. Keep the pictures coming. On such a dreary day they are great!

Re: Honda GoldWing Gl1500 Custom Built Trike

Been working on the molds for the different parts of the body.
Below is the outside of the trunk lid.
Already did the inside.

Re: Honda GoldWing Gl1500 Custom Built Trike

Working with fiberglass myself in the past I can really see your hard work. BTW that yellow car in the background is that a Fiberbab Bradsy GT. are you going to be producing the trikes for sale ?
