FOB question

First question-probably of many as I get used to this new toy. Did I read the manual right about running without the Fob? My son came to look today and I let him take a spin. Backed it out of the garage, started it, and let him ride. I realized later that I had the fob in my pocket and he was a half mile away. The manual seems to say it will just display "No Fob" for a short time and keep running, but if the bike is killed it will not restart. The salesman said it would kill the motor if you rode away from the fob.
Other than that, all I can say after 2 rides is SWWEEEEEEEETTTT!!

Thanks. Sounds like the salesman needs to study up on that a little bit. I thought that was the way the owner's manual read.

BE sure to set the code for your security over ride to something that is easy for you to remember, & practice using it a few times to get familiar with how to do it. There should be a card in your manual to keep in your wallet on the procedure..
Another thing I do is put a spare fob battery in the tour pac. Even tho I change it once a year.

If ,And this is a big if, If you realize you rode away with out the FOB you can restart if you stopped the engine with the kill button.. My only complaint is that the engine should turn off when your out of range of the FOB.. I did this twice, The FOB was on a shelf next to the Trike, Started it up and drove off only to find 5 miles later when I stopped at a store it wouldn't restart..

Turning the engine off when you're out of range of the FOB could put you in a dangerous situation....:xzqxz:

15 Feet... That's the range....

What if 15 feet away was a railroad track or an intersection where you'd be pulling out into traffic? ;) I just don't think Harley is going to put itself into that sort of liability. (That being the engine shutting down because the owner has left the FOB behind) We are talking about the same thing, right?

I suppose my previous post should have said, "Shutting down the engine" instead of "Turning the engine off".

The bike will not shut down if you ride out of range, however if you are out of range and shut the bike off it will not restart without the fob or the security code.Read the manual it's all in there.

That's all I was confirming was that I had read the manual right. Like I said, the salesman said it would shut down when the bike got 15 to 20 feet away from the fob. He apparently hasn't read the manual.

The motor shuts down on mine if it is 20 feet away from the fob. I left the fob on the shelf, backed out of the garage, motor shut off at the bottom of the driveway. Just like the dealer told me it would. Could not figure out what was wrong. Would not restart. Then remembered the fob. Went and got it, started right up.

Stop & think what would happen if you were going along with heavy traffic & something happened to your fob like a bad contact inside. No transmit------dead engine ! Cars running over ya !
Sound familiar ? That is what GM is being sued over with their Ign switch turning off the engine without warning.

I start mine and park near the end of the driveway, 70 feet long, too allow it<br />
to warm up before leaving while I go back inside the garage or house. I park at this distance to keep exhaust fumes from entering the garage. I keep the FOB in my vest pocket. Been doing this for 2 yrs and it has never shut down...2013 model.

First time I rolled mine out of the garage without the fob and with the switch still off, it locked the stearing and the alarm went off. Had to get the fob to reset everything. It worked like it should have. ThumbUp

I've never heard of an automatic steering lock on a Harley. Don't most have to be locked by turning a key?

Yep, with the key in the off position and you turn the wheel while moving it locks the steering.

Reading thru this gave me a good laugh. Your bike will not shut off if you get away from the FOB. If it does you've got another problem. I lost my FOB in either Georgia or Alabama a couple years ago on one of our long spring rides and rode about 1800 miles without it. I KNEW my pass code and just had to enter it every time we stopped. PIA !!! Have ridden to work several times over the years and realized I'd left the FOB laying on the work bench.

I can assure you that my TG shuts off if I get 20 feet away from the FOB. My dealer told me that it would when I bought it. They were correct.

Sorry but you have something else wrong. Just to verify I just went out (12:15CST, 1\29\'15), started my '13 TG, took my FOB into the house and rode to Sams (15 miles) and back WITHOUT the FOB.

Why would Harley put out all kinds of info and/or instructions on riding without the FOB if your couldn't get out of your driveway.

Was going to load the Trike up to take to the dealer Monday to have it gone thru before spring. Tried to start up, wouldn't start. Went back in the house got the other Fob and keys and started right up. Battery was dead in my set of keys. The wifes worked. Stopped and bought two new batteries.

if you DECODE your Security system; does it STAY OFF even after you turn it off ?? and then you can restart it again? but your system has no Security on, right? I got alittle confused about all this...:xzqxz:

Ok. I don't know what is wrong. But that is what it does. I will try it again this weekend.

Trent, If you find that yours does in fact do what you say, have a ride down to the Harley store & try that out on any other scoot there & see if you can find others that do the same.
I'm not calling a BS, but if it does something is set wrong with the system.
Like I mentioned before, GM is being sued over their switch killing the engine while in traffic. Harley wouldn't want that to happen to them if something killed the FOB & killed the engine.

That is an odd happening, it shouldn't do that. I know I've taken off on my dads 09 and forgot the fob in the garage without thinking.
