FOB question

BE sure to set the code for your security over ride to something that is easy for you to remember, & practice using it a few times to get familiar with how to do it. There should be a card in your manual to keep in your wallet on the procedure.. Another thing I do is put a spare fob battery in the tour pac. Even tho I change it once a year.
Since it's a 5 digit code set your security code to your zip code.. Ought not forget that.

Also, don't sit on the bike while doing the code entry functions.

Could you just leave the FOB in the tour pack and just lock the forks with the key ? that also lock's the ign. sw. plus the trike's wt. is around 1400 lbs. it would be hard to roll it on to a trailer etc.

I have heard some here say that if you leave the fob in the bike that it will run the fob's batt. down, what's the diff. in the fob being kept within 15 ft. of the bike ?
why do you have to have three diff. ways to prevent theft .
If I could I would have the fob sys. disabled for good and done away with esp. on the trike's do to their wt. although I guess some one with a huey helicopter and a sling could steal it.

just trying to learn and keep it simple, like me :).

you got me! love the pic...ok. after you turn off the Security code, does it stay off until you put the code back in.? (does that make better sense?)

YES! Every time you shut down the bike without the FOB present, you will need to re-enter the code to re-start the bike. ThumbUp

I have no problem with the way the FOB system works and I would never leave the FOB with the bike. You're just making it one step easier for the thief that wants to steal your bike. I know a lot of people say that if a thief really wants your bike, he'll find a way to get it, but does that mean you should be any less pro-active in preventing the theft? Not every one that attempts to steal a bike is successful. Only the pros have a system down for driving away with a bike. The amateurs can be thwarted. ;)

If your registration is on your bike somewhere and a thief access's it, he may have figured you would use that, if that didn't work, he might try your house #'s, he'll look for anything common in the info he finds to see if it's your code. I chose five random numbers then had them tattooed on my pecker. That way - barring my pecker getting ripped off in a violent lowside - I'll always have my code with me. ;)

I know if a person knows the trick they can pop the ignition lock pretty easily and then all they need is the ignition alignment tool to unlock it and turn it on. A few years back the lock on my 06 Ultra broke with the forks locked. The local dealer sent a tech who didn't bring all the proper tools, he called for their lift gate truck and the 3 of us picked it up and got it into the truck. Back at in the service dept they had it unlocked and a new ignition lock installed in 5 minutes. I ask how he did it, he wouldn't tell me, just grinned and said most good Harley thieves know how.

GOTCHA on the Answer to my question. I was hoping someone knew how to permanently disable the Security code.:D

The FOB is a radio transmitter that puts out a code for the ECM to recognize & authorize the unit to operate & turn the alarm off. I do know that if in a trailer being hauled the alarm will wear down the Trike battery if not in transport/service mode. I don't know how it would wear down the FOB as it transmits full time whether at the Trike or not. BUT the Trike may transmit to turn on the FOB to get a code. I don't know. Good question.
If you happen to think that your Trike is safe because of it's weight & bulk, A tow truck, or a covered trailer with a winch will make it gone in less than 5min.
Without a tow truck, a swift kick to the handle bars will break the fork lock. Or just pop off the lock assm & pull up the lock pin. If they can get under the seat, they can unplug your ECM & plug in theirs with their FOB access, or none needed. Then ride away for the nearest parts bin.
One of the best locks is on the brake rotors. Out of the reach of any cutter or hard to get to with anything to break the lock.
If someone wants your Trike bad enough, not much you can do. But the old saying that a lock only keeps honest people honest goes a long way ! So the more complex you can make it the better. A 45 auto comes to mind......It could mean the safety of multiple bikes & Trikes in the area ! You probably shouldn't take that last remark seriously for your own freedom.

Sloufoot,
Every thing you said is true, and if it ever happens to me their is always the insurance co......then onto another hobby of less worry ........;).

There's a small tab under the ignition knob that you turn the knob all the way to accessory, push up on the tab and the knob pops off.....bout a 15 second job.

I've had them out a time or two, your right takes only a few seconds. You can't push the tab if the ignition is locked in the lock position, thus comes some trick I don't know and he wouldn't tell me.

Tried it last night. First I marked where the tab was on the knob while in accessory. Then I moved the knob to the locked position. Took a 45* angle dental cleaning pic and pushed the tab up while it was in the locked position..

Was the ignition locked with the key? Mine was when I had to get someone to fix it, I had locked it and something broke internally so the key wouldn't unlock it.
