engine chatter

Just purchased a new 2012 tri-glide. I had the pipes changed and dyno tuned. I had only rode the trike about 100 miles before I had this done and did not notice any engine chatter before the pipes were changed and it was dyno. I am now hearing a chatter when I throttle down at speeds of 60-75 mph in 5th or 6th gear and especially 6th. It is loud enough that my wife also hears the chatter. It sounds kinda like a loose screw or something vibrating. Has anyone had this problem or can anyone tell me whether they think having it dyno could cause this problem or is it a problem? Thanks!

It would be my guess that all on the board here have 1000 different ideas what "Engine Chatter" means. You will get suggestions from bad front tire to rear break pads. It is new and under warranty, let the dealer sweat it. There is a rubber noise damper on the mufflers that can slip off, the muffler will rattle on the bracket if the rubber slips off, or they screwed it up when they put on your mufflers.

It is under warranty and i took it to the dealer and they have told me that don't hear any noise at all. Just concerned me the dyno could have caused a problem. I guess I am going to have to take it back again and let my wife ride with them to point out the noise. I just thought I would ask your guys opinion on this to see if anyone else has had the problem.........sometimes hearing from others helps. thanks

Had something similar on my 11 T/G, After i had duels put on , The chrome heat shields end's were rubbing a little and would rub on the frame and engine, So with a dremel i trimmed a little off each end , Also one of the worm clamps loosen just enough to rattle. Raddle /Chatter gone, Hope this helps.

was it the mufflers or the whole exhaust removed??

Could be a million things making noise..

Chrome exhaust sheilds???

Have them check the compensator nut.

Lots of that going around.

I agree with Oldtime. Lay your hand on the Primary cover to see if you can feel the noise. I had a "clatter" after about 2000 miles and didn't give it much thought. But, while coming home from a trip to Montana it was really starting to clatter and I could feel it (8000+ miles on the trike). When I dropped it off for service as the mechanic pulled it into the shop it gave out the dreaded "bang", had not done than on me yet. Turned out the Compensator gear that goes on the crank end was installed backwards from the factory. Dealer installed a complete new SE Compensator and all is good now.

WOW! Mounted backwards - from the FACTORY?? What's going on when you can't even get a Harley from the factory correctly assembled. What's this world coming to. :AGGHH:

I'd also check the heat shields - matter of fact I'd check ALL the fasteners/connectors.

If she is hearing the noise, Id check the rubbers on the rearward muffler mounts...They tend to slide out..My trick fix..Put em back in place and put a nylon zip tie thru them and the bracket..problem solved of no more sliding out and super easy ta do...HB

Either that or ya got a noisey 5th gear , just like mine...You should hear mine in 1st gear...Sounds like an ol chevy 4 spped in a truck in BULL low..Redline helped, but Im sure ists just a poor mesh of straight cut gears..Oh well, its definetly a Harley and I can tell when im in 1st or 5th...LOL...HB

I could tell you what I have heard....Put in ear plugs, turn the radio up,put on louder mufflers, they all do that, the problem is the Amsoil you are using, and my favorite is "you are using synthetic oil and it is too slick and the bearings slip instead of turning".....My Tri glide "Rattles" excessively about 2500 rpm and about 3000 rpm it makes an entirely different noise which doesn't seem to related to the "clatter" which I believe is valve train noise. My Dealer put in 60WT. oil and that did quieten the noise some but only disguised the problem so I'm changing oil tomorrow and putting back in 20-50 like the manual says and take the trike back and tell them to fix it.....Or if I can I will trade for a Honda.....Wish I had got that brand to begin with.....

If its the valve train ticking you could have a lifter that isn't staying pumped up, this will make them tick.

The noise mine makes is way louder than a "tick".......Almost a knock and very obvious even at 60--70 miles per hour....Actually a "clatter" at about 2500 then around 3000 is when it really sounds bad....
