Ok, got a phone call claiming it is microsoft where my computer had been high jacked. I do not use my computer for any personal information. I don't keep personal information on my computer. I use a usb plug in hard drive that I only hook up when it is needed.
It was a scam wanting me to but a soft ware to protect my computer. I told them I don't know you and you called me so forget about getting anything other than that from me.
So If you get a phone call claiming to be associated with microsoft it is a scam.
I could not believe that were bold enough to try a phone call. That was dumb on their part.
I may format the computer just in case.

Here in Chicago they had a warning on the news about these calls this evening. Some people are even getting them in fluent Spanish. If its me I would just ignore it. I cant imagine Microsoft with millions of computers out there calling you up. I had one awhile back ,he had a nice Indian accent and said he was from Microsoft-so I hung up on him.

I wouldn't bother with the re-formatting, it is a scam, I get those calls on the average of once a month. Just laugh at them, make fun of their foreign accent, call them stupid idiots and hang up!

I got a robo-call saying it was from the IRS saying they were suing me, and to wait until an agent got on the line. I thought 'This is gonna be good'. I was right. After about 30 seconds, somebody that sounded like they were from India came on the line, and said his name was Bob Smith.

Well, I messed with this guy's head for about 5 minutes asking him what his real name was...Singh? Deepak?...something like that. He finally hung up when I told him I was recording the conversation.

Yep got one yesterday on my cell phone while I was driving. Microsoft windows tech support with a perfect Indian accent. I use Apple.

These people crack me up. All they want is to gain control over the computer. I told the rep I was glad they called because I was having trouble with windows. "That's why we are here, to help you, she said." I said, "great! Because two windows have started leaking every time it rains and I want them changed out under warranty". Long silence........... then click, buzz.

I get those calls about every other week. I just start cursing at them with the most vile profane verbs I can think of at the time and they hang up. The area code on the number that usually calls is located in Texas. With an India accent.

Scam call from Microsoft

I have had them in the past and in all cases the area code is in the US but they are from overseas using the internet to make the call it is called Voice of IP.

They hung up on me when I told them my computer was a Commodore 64 and the only problem I had was getting floppy disks for it....

Yup. Seems like there is a new scam every day.

I had a call from somebody with a suspicious accent (Boris or Vlad or Igor maybe?) telling me my credit card had been compromised and many charges had been made already.

I asked which card. He told me it was Discover card. Since I don't have one I played along. Please verify card number, so I made one up. Please verify social security number, so I made one up. The final straw was verify home address, so I gave them 4409 Llewellyn Avenue, Fort Meade, Maryland 20755.

Silence for a few seconds, then dial tone. They never called back. Fort Meade houses a major NSA facility. :D ...:laugh:

Do not reformat your hard drive. There is no need for that. As has been said, its all a scam and they are trying to get your credit card info for some bogus virus scanning software.

Being a computer tech and with the introduction of the new Windows 10 operating system, these calls are flooding phones now. I probably get 2 to 5 calls a day from clients claiming that Microsoft called regarding issues with their computer systems.

Microsoft WILL NOT call. LOL.

It really has nothing to do with your computer system so there shouldn't be a reason in the world for ya to reformat and reinstall your operating system.

If your worried about the possibility of something being amiss on your system, download the free version of Malwarebytes:
https://www.malwarebytes.org/

Malwarebytes is one of the best free malware removal software there is.

There is also Superantispyware:
http://www.superantispyware.com/download.html

Which they also have the free version. Both are awesome free software and do a complete database update prior to scanning your system for spyware/malware.

Those Texas Indians are the worst tribe imaginable! :D

I love these calls.. I always start yelling and freaking out and begging for their help.. but never let them get a word in. They get nice and flustered :)

Yep......the last one I got so mad he called me a son-of-a-bitch and hung up. Called again a couple weeks later I told them I no longer own a computer and they haven't called since.

yes I got 2 calls from someone claiming they was from microsoft. the first time I just kissed it off and after I got off the ph I called microsoft. they said they don't call costumers. about a week later I got another call same mans voice. I just let him talk, he said my computer was about to crash it had many problems, I ask what do I need to do, he said we have a program you can buy for $300 that would fix every thing. ( knowing it was a scam ) I told him I could not pay $300 he said he had one for $150 I said still to high we got to $35 and I told him microsoft don't call people and not to call me again. that was 5 or 6 months ago and no more calls & my pc is still running fine

I had them call my cell one day, They asked if I had a computer, I told them I have many computers, they asked about windows versions... I told them many versions... they ask who maintains them, I said me silly I run the cybersecurity lab here. CLICK. I do run the Cisco and Cybersecurity Lab at the State College :D

But seriously do not give these folks any information, Microsoft will never call you EVER.

Amazing, isn't it? They're calling you on the phone to tell you something's wrong with your computer. And people fall for THAT???

PC

"...I told them I no longer own a computer and they haven't called since.

This works for more than just computers. Roofing & siding (You have the wrong # ~ I live in an apartment...) Sirius satellite radio (Gee ~ I *just* sold that car last week...) and anything else (I don't have a credit card ~ my lawyer told me to cut it up after the 3rd bankruptcy...)

Whatever they're selling, I don't own it, can't afford it, or it doesn't apply to me. Then I hang up :p
