Was at the dealer and I talked to the general manager and ask him why the gray trike is free color and the black is now charged for it. He told me that everybody was wanting black so harley decided to charge for the black, they always charged for 2 tones and anything else but black was no charge. Now gray is a no charge, go figure, not thrilled with the color of gray but I guess I could get used to it, but I love my black trike so I will stay with that.

All for now Trampas

Everybody wants black for a couple of other reasons. It's a lot easier and cheaper to get parts that are black as opposed to colors. Fairings come to mind here. Also, a black Harley has a black frame. A red Harley has, wait for it, a black frame. There's no reason that Harley can't paint the frames to match the color of the year, they just don't. Cheaper, I'm sure, but looks cheaper too. It irritates the hell out of me that black would now be considered a custom paint after a 100 years of it being on mostly everything.

Seems simple to me the free color was what most wanted so they change the free color to one not as well liked so you'll pay extra for the same color that was free so they now actually are getting more for the bike. Plus unless things have changed with the newer paints black paint has the cheapest cost so they get more on both ends.

I also have the vivid black, but only because it was the only choice at the time. I like the new "billiard gray" and would have had that if it was available. Even with the $50 upcharge.

Harley did that in 1988 with some of the Softails, I have a friend back in Mn that has one, it is blue and silver

The mystic shift is definitely unique. My local dealer got one a month or so ago and I got to see it both indoors and outdoors. It’s purple indoors and black outdoors in the sun. They still have it. A couple weeks later, they got a Whiskey trike in and I went and looked at it. They were working a deal on it and said an older couple were trading their Goldwing trike and said the Harley rode better. I knew the salesman was BS’ing me then. I responded oh really, what did they do to improve the suspension, especially going to low profile tires? Crickets…. Anyway, it was nice looking but I like my scorched orange Roadsmith better. If you look, the mystic shift is the trike behind the whiskey in the pic.
