Cannot remove oil filter from bike

Drained the oil from the bike yesterday. Then, found out I could not remove the oil filter. Even bought a second wrench and still could not break it loose. Only have 4400 miles on the bike since the last oil change. Is it necessary to replace the oil filter with every oil change?

It is a matter of opinion but I think it is a wise thing to do.

I found a filter tool at Cycle Gear for $10 and it works like a champ. I've had to sometime completely colapse the fliter until I found this tool. Three prong tool that tightens on the filter as you unscrew it.

Most oil does not break down in the 4400 miles you have on that oil but it does get dirty. If I could only afford one product it would be the filter first then the oil as I could also afford that. Somehow I don't think cost is the desiding factor..... Someone had tightened that one way too much!!!

BTW -- I prefer the filter socket style removal tool. Never had it slip.

If all else fails you can do it down and dirty, by driving a Philips head screwdriver through it. Of course if that fails there is no turning back. A band wrench might do it.

That's the way we did it in the old days. Drive a screw driver through both sides. Then you have something to grip on. Was you engine hot or cold when you tried it? This is why you don't tighten the filter real tight.

You can buy a 2-pack of Strap Wrenches fairly inexpensively at Harbor Freight or other such places.

Since finding out how well they work for removing oil filters, haven't used anything else. ThumbUp

I use a channel lock pliers, It will crush it a little but the filter is trash anyway, And if that fails like previously said brake out the Screwdriver.ThumbUp

besides being tightened to tight I'm wondering if the gasket was not oiled before the filter was installed.

Good point. I'd almost bet on that but we'll never know. I always pre-soak the new filter with new oil and use some of the new oil to coat the seal also.

I use a nylon strap wrench (2 inch wide nylon strap in a square tube) for filters a standard socket type wrench won't loosen. Can't remember where I bought it...will check for a name on it when I go back to work.
Try rapping on the side of the filter with a rubber hammer (or the palm of your hand) to break the seal loose.

The manual calls for the filter to be torqued to 19 ft lbs, do you guys use torque wrench on the filter or just tighten it. At 19 ft lbs its gonna be pretty tight and hard to remove. I have several oil filter wrenches and the best I have found is the cap type that fits on the filter.

The rubber gasket has heated and bonded the filter to the housing. If you can, attempt to cut through the rubber gasket all the way around with a single edge razor blade as deep as you can.Once the rubber is cut the filter will spin off fairly easy and you can then scrape off the remaining gasket from the housing with the razor blade.
As mentioned above, oil the new filter gasket and hand tighten.
Hope this helps, has worked many times for me.

Not trying to be a wise guy but you could go to the Harley dealer and buy the tool designed to take the filter off. M3 and I have one and it has never failed us. It is worth every penney it cost.

I have ALL but the Harley tool and none work as good as the $10, 3 pronged rachet style filter tool at Cycle Gear !!!! But then again, I probably don't have the experience that some of you do as I've only been riding since 1960 starting on an old Cushman scooter and worked my way up thru numerous 2-wheelers to include building a Harley style stroker to my current M109R and Stallion. Find what works best for you and be happy.

At some time you are going to have to face the fact that you have to replace the filter. Try it when the engine is cold. I used to have a thermos bottle that I'd close the top only slightly hand tight, but the heat from the coffee caused the plastic to expand making it nearly impossible to remove later. The dip stick on you engine if cold should be only tight enough to slightly compress the "O" ring or you'll have a hard time trying to remove it with a hot engine.

Comanche needs a trunk monkey. They can get the job done. I myself and me always put the filter on by hand and take it off by hand. There is NO NEED for a torque wrench.

I am glad to hear someone as knowledgeable as Stephen say that! I often thought it must be true but never had the guts to try it. Next time I will.

I run it down to bump and then 3/4 turn. Never had a drop of oil leak out.... I have to admit I do use the socket style tool and a ratchet. Wimpy Hands!!!

Put about 3oz of oil in the filter
( much more and it pours out ) drip some on the gasket.. Thread it on by hand until it just hits the bottom, then give it a good turn maybe 1/4 to 1/2 turn extra. Start it , check for leaks .

If Comanche wants that filter off all he has to do is tap into the side of the oil filter with a screw driver (using a hammer to tap it in) and use the screw driver as a turning device. It will come right off. Just don't know why he's changing oil at 4000 instead of 8000 miles as per the honda recommended interval.

soungs like he is one of us old schoolers---i tried but couldn.t help myself--changed mine at 2,000 miles

vise grip makes a chain style filter wrench, it will take off the filter real well. strap wrenches work well too. the screw driver method works in a pinch as well. the rite wrench and torque specs makes good sense too.I always use a light coating of grease on the o ring . if tightening without wrench do it with your hand let oring make contact and tighten one full turn.
