cannot restart if in gear

Perhaps someone can help

Whenever I try to start the engine whilst in gear it fails to start. I stop the in gear and the engine stops butthe ignition is still on, I cannot restart the engine unless I put it into neutralgear. Occasionally it will correct itself and perform as it should then suddenly does it all over again.

Has anyone had this and if so how was it mended?

This is on a Honda goldwing 1800 trike. 2007

Help please

Check the side stand (kick stand), some builders wire a by pass into it or just leave it up. The switch on the side stand could be faulty or a wire is loose.

Also the clutch switch could not be working as it should. You might want to check that out.My 2010 will not start in gear at times.I have not checked it out but have figured it is the clutch switch.I had a gl1500 goldwing years ago ,that the bushing in the clutch lever got worn, and would not let the switch make up.I replaced the bushing and al was well.

+1 on kick stand switch/clutch switch. For starters I would spray the clutch switch with contact cleaner.(would not hurt to do all switches) Is the engine dying when you stop?

I'm betting clutch switch, if it was the side stand switch the engine would shutdown when put in gear. My 12 at times won't start in gear, I think it is the Kuryakin grips being to thick. If I release and apply it a couple times, it'll start in gear.

No it doesn't die out on me. Sometimes it works Ok then doesn't start when left in gear. Just cannot trust the darn thing. The side stand has just been tapped up and left under the side cover. I have tested it to make should it is in the up position.

Yes I am thinking that may be the cause. I also have Kuryakin grips so that will have to be included in the equation. Now to work.

Just great being able to contact other owners for help. Thanks all.

Well the work went OK and it's all good now.

The problem was the small contact ( the first one under the clutch lever) It seemed that this wasn't making contact, or only just, so I first cleaned it with very fine Emery cloth and tightened it a bit. That did the trike. Simple when you know how!!!
Thanks again for all the advice given.

I had one do the same thing I cleaned and it worked fine for a short while. I replaced the clutch. not much $$ and has worked for 3 years now.

Well it happened again. So cleaned the points again and it started ok whilst in gear. This has me thinking that I need to change the switches. Not too expensive £35 .

But will wait until it stops again before I shell out the cash.

Mine was doing the same thing. I thought maybe it was in the clutch lever. I happened
to check the clutch lever adjuster at the lever. Mine was set at position #5, I moved it to #3 and all is well. It now starts in gear every time. You may want to check it out.

Well it's been a few weeks now and after cleaning the points in the switches, with fine emery paper, the trike starts every time in gear with the clutch in.

Took about 30 mins to do the job.

Ride safe.
