Breather Tube Bypass

Im using a home made cover.. I didn't like the oval Harley cover on the stage 1 filter. Plus the oval was too long and the side of my knee would come in contact with it.
So I took a cover from a tin cookie can [Think paint can], drilled a hole in the middle for the allen bolt rattle can panted it back..ThumbUp

Kevin I installed the 606 air cleaner and the discrete breather system. I'm pretty sure I have everything installed right but I'm second guessing myself. Went for a test ride and I can hear the air cleaner sucking air when I am on the throttle. I've never noticed that before. Is that normal?

Running the 606, or any other aftermarket Stage 1 A/C, the noise will be louder than stock.

This is normal.

How much louder will depend on the type of filter element and the type of cover (if any) over the filter element.

The sounds being heard are:

1. Actual air being sucked in
2. On the '14-up Twin Cams, the cams are a bit different than earlier years and you can sometimes hear a bit of noise from the valve overlap. Sometimes it can even sound a bit like a knocking noise.

Of course, there is always a possibility that there is a leak somewhere, making the noise even louder.

Make sure the backplate of the air cleaner is tight against the gasket between the backplate and the throttle body. Make sure the filter element is tight at the backplate and whatever cover you're running.

I, myself, am running a 606 with a 7 Spoke cover. I also have a rain sock over the filter element and under the cover (that way I can ride in pouring rain with no issues) and while it is louder than when running a stock air cleaner, it is not bothersome.

My guess is that once you check to make sure there are no leaks, that will put your mind at rest and you will not even notice the sound after riding for awhile.

:Agree: 100%, kinda like the sound we heard in the 60's with either Tri-Power or Dual Quads with the air cleaner cover off!! :pepper: I know when I installed the "Moto-Hooligan" air system on my V-Rod it sure sounded different, and I personally liked the sound!!

How often do the little round filters need to be changed or cleaned in the breather bolts?

Depends on the degree of blow-by in each bike. The instructions say 5k-10k miles. Some people don't ever change them. They just ride and clean the blow-by off, as needed. If your engine has quite a bit of blow-by,one of our External Breather Systems might be a better option.

Sorry,Richard. I meant to say "one of our hose style external breather systems." Darn edit function. :)

Sure glad I was paying attention to this thread. I took the filter off and found 2 things, small screw was backing out and would have been sucked in that big hole. Next was the two holes will need to be plugged when I install the breather tube bypass. This back plate is the Harley screaming eagle stage 1 filter. JimIMG_5692.JPG

The back plate on my 11 Stage 1 doesn't have those screws. Or the holes where they would go.
Just the two vent holes. The plate is bolted to the heads with with two 7/16 bolts.

I would think if there was too much mist and the filters were clogged, it could end up running down on the motor?

Yes, the Outlaw and Stealth Breather Bolts work well on 95% of the Sportsters, and on most of the early Twin Cams, but on later model Twin Cams, about 50% of them blow too much oil for the breather bolts. When that happens, oil will end up on the side of the bike/trike.

No way to know if yours blows more than normal or not, so the safe bet with a 103 Twin Cam is to use one of the Hose & Filter (or Catch-Can) External Breather Systems.

You're right, but before I do I want to put a bowl under the drip tube (for a week or two) just to see how much crap is now not going back into the engine. I know I will only get a partial reading because a lot is lost while riding, but it will be some kind of indicator. If there is a OMG amount, I will post a picture ;)

I would install a catch can or filter , unless you don't care about having all that snot on the underside and rear areas of your vehicle. Just my $.02 ! Ebert
