Belly Pan on a GL1800 trike

Installed it last monday. was not as easy as I thought because of the ground effects. took almost 3 hours, but now that I've done it, could redo the job in 45 minutes or less. fits perfectly, and of course it's not visible unless you lie on the ground and look under it. Note: if you're thinking about instlling on; they recommend wearing gloves. I didn't, instead I spent 30 minutes sanding the edges. Didn't help, I wound up with about 25 razor like "paper cuts" on my hands. Lesson learned: Wear gloves.

Posted Pics yet.....???......THANKS....:):wtg:

Welcome aboard. There is no good answer to what is the best conversion. To many variables. To each their own.

Scalphunter, Heard from the Grapevine that Blondie, not you put on your brake pan. I had one put on today. I also had brake pads installed. Regarding the belly pan, if you get one and want to install it your self, get the TULSA model. It just slides on. The others have to be bolted on.l

You can get aluminum or stainless steel. I chose the 2 peice louvered stainless steel and consider it a good investment. Think I paid in the sixties for it and had a mechanic buddy put it on for me. Consider what is going to happen if you puncture your oil filter by not having one! Play it safe and invest in one. No heat problems that I know of, but mine are the vented two peice.

yup biggest issue is cuts on the razor sharp edges, read the reviews on wingstuff, covered that issue in my review and others have as well, its a lesson you learn fast even if you do not read them, dang things work like a charm:pepper:

Just installed my vented pan from Wingstuff 2 days ago. Was a bit of a pain to do as I have a Hannigan kit with floorboards. You are supposed to remove the lower covers and mount the pan onto the same 4 bolts the lowers are bolted on with. Only problem is that you can't get the panels off with the floorboards on, but if you really pull hard, you can force the panels off just far enough to slip the pan in behind it, then bolt it all back in place. Non-gentle persuasion required!!!!!

I was surprised, after reading the above posts, to find that all the edges had already been dressed to where there were no sharp edges. No gloves and no cuts. Maybe I just got lucky.
Has anybody noticed a strong odor after riding with the pan? It smells a little like burning plastic, but I checked and the pan it did not appear to have a plastic film applied. With the weather we've been having, I haven't ridden very far, but I'm hoping the odor goes away after it gets "burnt in".

While taking the trike off of a trailor,I got hung up and could of cried real tears watching anti-freeze go all over the ground..It would be a hole lot cheaper to get the pan before this happens to you..We lost a day and a half on vacation to the mountains..I kept putting it off--live and learn...tommy loso

I've now put over a thousand miles on my baby since adding the belly pan. The odor I mentioned earlier is gone and I have not noticed any increase in running temps at all. Great investment.

installed one on the wing when it was a 2 wheeler, its the vented model and it works great on the trike as well, I am sure I would never have made it up to alaska without it on the trike, no heat issues, can change the oil and filter and do not need to remove the cowl. They are definitely a must upgrade given hond allowing the antifreeze container hang out in the open, SHAME ON HONDA for doing that:yes:

Agree Completely :pepper::pepper:

I just finished adding a Wing Stuff belly pan to my 05 Wing with 09 Motor Trike conversion with aqua shields. I had to remove the forward half of the aqua shield to get access to the 4 nuts, but after that the main body of the pan slid right in. My problem/question is with the forward part of the pan that protects the oil filter. The frame that supports the aqua shield will not allow that removable section to be attached. Is this common? will I have to modify that piece(I think it will severly weaken the part) to fit or with these particular wt bearing aqua shields will I just have to leave it off? Am I doing something wrong or missing something obvious.(it wouldn't be the first time). I would like to hear from Motor Trike owners with aqua shields. Thanks ..Alan

Can anyone tell me if I have to drop or remove my 2011 CSC Cobra running boards to install the stainless steel vented belly pan on my 2009 goldwing ? Would like to have one on the trike, but will I have to take it to an installer to have this done ?

Thanks

I have one but it is not vented. I do have to endure quite a bit wind with it moving me all over the road if a gust of wind blows up. But I would not ride without it at some point in time I will get the vented one. I should have told the dealer that I wanted the vented one when I bought the bike and had alot of goodies installed before I rode it home but lessen learned.

I love the peace of mind with the belly pan on and looked under it after about 2000 miles on it and it sure looked beat up but the bike is OK and I have not noticed any issues with heat from it I have put 10,010 miles on it since July 1st and not a problem.

Mine paid for itself (2 wheeler) within a week of installing! Tree branch, about 3" in diameter fell right in front of me. FELT it thump HARD underneath the bike. Nice scratch on belly pan just in front of the coolant bottle, and NO OTHER DAMAGE WHATSOEVER !!!!
Got lucky with the wheels/tires, but am certain that log woulda taken the coolant bottle completely off.

BE VERY CAREFULL WHEN HANDLING THE NEW PAN! SHARP EDGES !!!

Especially the louvered style. (Wingstuff) Louvres are 'punched' into the steel leaving razor like edges. Run a file around all edges to round them off. I wore soft 'garden' gloves which were summarily shredded by the time I was done. Have read of guys having to get stitches!!! In my opinion, belly pans should be OEM on the GoldWing.

I have a question. The Tulsa style has slots and the vented one has a hole. Can a person cut the hole where it would be like the slot and make it easier to install, or would that be a bad thing to do. I have a new Goldwing and I am going to put a belly pan on but just don't know which one would be the easiest to put on.

Slots are easier, holes are more secure. Take your choice. I chose holes. Ones with slots don't seem to be falling off left and right.
Mine is totally unvented, and I haven't noticed any heat issues.
