Bad Flywheel

The trike has always had a rough time starting, but now it wont start at all. I can push it forward and it attempts to start, then just a click. I removed the starter and had it tested. The guy said he wasn't able to do a full test on it, but said it looked to be in good shape, so I had the battery tested. It passed all tests and was pushing a solid 12V. Checked the wiring and everything looked great, so I put everything back together and same results. I thought maybe the starter was bad after all, so when I removed it, I looked at the flywheel and there it was, teeth chewed up about half way up. Looks like I will be replacing the flywheel this weekend. So the question is should I replace the starter also? I don't want to replace the flywheel jsut to have this happen again. What are your thoughts?

Sounds like you must of had an alignment problem. I would suggest that you replace the starter gear. I don't know exactly what you have but if it chewed the flywheel it was not meshing correctly and both parts will be damaged. Sounds like it was only 1/2 engaging.

Replaced the flywheel and starter this weekend, but was not able to put the engine back to the transmission (ran out of town). The flywheel was in really bad shape. Crossing my fingers that this will fix the issue!
