Looked everywhere but the Avon trike tire for a Goldwing seems to be unobtanium AGAIN. This happened a few years ago when I needed to replace the front tire on my Roadsmith conversion. I just can't figure out why Avon doesn't keep churning these tires out. I don't care to put rear tires on mounted backwards and have a standard radial on the front and it didn't wear well... Excedra with Z speed rating (too soft I guess) and won't make that mistake again.

I am like you - and a little surprised. I talked (by e-mail) to one of their representatives and was told they will make them. So far, nothing.

Add to that - the price they are charging for this tire is out of this world. My current tire has about 10K on it. So, I should be good for this year - and perhaps next.

When ready, I think I will again go with the BT46 - run backwards. Use to run them that way back in the mid 90s.

@geol it has been that way for several years now and hasn't changed since you were looking. I had a similar conversation like @cycle7447 last year with a North American higher up at Avon and was promised they would be available by the fall of last year. That didn't happen. And like @cycle7447 I reached out to same guy again a few months ago and was promised by fall this year, the tires would start to show up at retailers. I did see some retailers got a small supply in but they had waiting lists and were out of stock almost immediately. And even those were a bit overpriced IMHO. The few limited that you can find with some in stock, the shops are opportunists and seriously price gouging and no one is going to pay their prices.

I used one a few years back and liked it but when it came time to replace early last year, I ran into same problem. Unfortunately the Bridgestone Battlax BT46 is really the only real option.

That's what I put on late last year and was pleasantly surprised. Actually ride pretty nice. I was a bit skeptical as I had previously wore out a BT45 and wasn't too thrilled about it but the BT46 was much better. Hopefully Avon (aka Goodyear) gets their act together and finally ship some Cobra Chrome AV-91 trike tires and at a reasonable price too. They are missing out with all the trike owners chomping at the bit to get a hold of one.

I'm going to try the BT46 tire, my next tire change over(BUT not sure about the reverse mount'n ) though, that kinda scare's me a bit

I think mounting it in reverse is crazy. Mounted mine correctly and it performs great!
Sir - that is definitely your right to mount it any way you like. As I and others have said, we have been doing this for years and we believe there are a number of advantages.

I would never call your decision or option "crazy" since this is your bike.

7447,
I'm sure that tourman didn't mean anything bad about you "what-so-ever" when post'n it's crazy to mount it backwards..
He has an opinion about tire replacement, (it be the same about loud pipes, everyone has their own opinion,,, yea or nay!!)

I absolutely agree - this is why I said, it's your bike. We all do have opinions - and, at times, they differ.

If this is what it looks like now, man, I wouldn't touch this. It looks great.

How does it run
7447,
No that's just a picture, God, I wish I still had it (I was 15/16 yrs old when I owned it (I'm 74 yrs old now!) my mom & dad bought it for me before I even had a license (my mom used to drive me around on it/I'd hop on the back, and wrap my arms around mom, and away we go, into the wild blue yonder! until I was finely 16 yrs old, and got my own MC license...
Aaaaaaaaaaaaa wonderful memories!

For me when my original front is done I and getting a rear mounted backwards. Had it on my 14 TG and it did fine, specially in the rain. My stock front has 9000 miles on it and I just got back from a 3000 mile run and it has more than half on it left.

Know the feeling. I kept my stock front tire on the bike until is had about 9500 miles on it. Tire was still in good shape. Still, I decided to have the Avon Trike tire installed since it was the beginning of the season, and I know I was taking some trip.

That trike tire has over 10K on it now and still in good shape. I am expecting just shy of 20K. So, it looks like I can ride that most of next year.

I had my Avon installed in Aug 2021. By Sep 2023, I had just over 13,000 miles on it and felt it was time to change it out. When it was brand new, it felt fantastic. Nice and smooth while rolling down the road and seemed to just absorb the bumps. As time went on, it began to develop the more flattened profile as trike tires seem to do. I noticed it no longer had the floating on air feel and at slow speed, it was a bit more difficult turning. I may have been able to eek out another 1000 or so miles but had a long road trip coming up and decided a new tire was a good choice.

As most everyone knows, I had no choice and was forced to the BT46. Brand new, I had that wonderful feeling again in the front end.

One thing I wanted to bring up is that the Avon for the GL1800 and the Harleys is different. The GL1800 Avon is a radial but the Harley Avon if I am correct is a bias ply. So it's kind of hard to compare them. It does seem like the Avon radial doesn't get as many miles out of it as the Avon bias ply but I could be wrong. The BT46 is a bias ply. I had fully expected to get more miles out of it but only got about 3500 miles before I couldn't use it anymore, don't ask....

Reviewing your comment about the Avon trike tire for the Harley. My Avon is the 130/70R18 - and should be the same as the one you use on the GoldWing.

Be mindful, this front tire is much different for those Harleys that have conversions vs Harley TriGlides.

Ah, ok. Good to know. So the MT90B-16 is the Tri-Glide option then?

You are correct - this is the standard size for the TriGlide. This caught my attention too; I wondered why the Ultra 2 wheeler had an 18 whereas the Ultra trike had a 16.

Also, the TriGlide fender has a light up front; the Ultra Limited does not. I like the light and had it on my other Ultras. So, after converting my bike, I ordered that same fender light - guess what, it does not fit

My 24 Tri-Glide doesn't have a light on the fender. Maybe I'd better go up to the stealership and ask them where the hell my light is! LOL
