Anyone running. A120. ?

Well.... I pulled the plug on the 120R.

Been readin your post's JJ and Mike. Stopped by the dealer today, Saturday.

The motor is in the Trike, the primary and clutch are done and buttoned up. The exhaust is mounted and done. Throttle body and injectors are on bench and ready to go on next.

Should be done and back home after heat cycle at the end of next week.

Then it will go into the trailer, hauled to a warm ridin place to break in.

I want to get the 1000 miles on it so I can get it dyno tuned before spring.

I have to have heart surgery at the end of Feburary, and want it ready to go when I am.

After a lot of readin and talking, I decided to leave the 120R stock. I think for what I am lookin for, it will be fine.

I was goin to do the swap myself, but the wife said,
" you don't have the temper for that"
I said " you mean patients?", She said "no temper".

Anyhoo.......... can't wait. It won't be a rocket, but it will be fun!!

Dang, your going to be grinning from ear to ear once its all said and done. Your going to be amazed at the difference, when you take the 1st ride. I know when I went from the 95" which was no slouch to to the 120 I was shocked, even more so when I finally dropped the hammer hard. I think the 120R as it comes is a pretty good package, plus it should be pretty versatile on fuel quality since the CCP is pretty reasonable.

What clutch are you going with?

S.E. performance clutch friction disc kit. 37980-10,/ with the s.e. spring.

Since I'm not launchin off the tree at Thomspon, he thinks it will hold.

He said, if not, he will give me all credit for what I paid and change to
what ever it will need.

They have done 120's, "Rs" and builds, including a 131ci with no clutch problem, but it's their first one in a Trike, so we'll see what happens with the clutch?

A month ago I picked up that very same clutch disk kit to experiment with in my 06, I'm curious how they will hold and where the friction zone will fall. Clutch slip isn't something you may necessarily find on a stop light or drag strip launch unless the clutch is just plain wrong for the application. When you 1st leave a light your in 1st which is an easy gear to get it moving. If you have slip you will see it when your in 5th or 6th accelerating from to low of an rpm or up a hill. In some cases there is mild clutch slip which won't be detected unless the dyno operator looks at a graph of gear ratio vs rpm, some operators don't take the time to check this.

I'm interested on how it will all work out, if the clutch holds good then it is good information for all. If you get some slip you may be able to solve it by just switching to the AIM 480 lb spring.

I'm happy for you, I think your going to be grinning from ear to ear when you finally get the chance to ride it. Like I said before, your going to be shocked at the difference. I can remember the day I 1st road mine when I picked it up. I was wearing tennis shoes and the traffic was thick as hell and my throttle was all of a sudden like an on/off switch from what it used to be. I just kept shaking my head and wondering what I may have gotten myself into. I learned how to manage the difference in the throttle, yours being TBW may not be quite as touchy as mine.

I can't remember what you were running for exhaust? Still sticking with the same?

Thanks Mike. Back in the 60"s and 70's we did what we called power shifting. That is, hold the throttle wide open and shift with a quick touch of the clutch. I still do it today when hitting the gears hard. That's when I notice clutch slippage the most. With my 88,95 and 103 I solved that problem with the heavy duty clutch spring. But no where near this much H.P. and tq.. It was easy to tell the slippage cause the r.p.m. would hang for a moment.

Back in 72 I ran a Barnett clutch, but they were a bear to pull and hold. Had to use nuteral a lot at stops. No easy pull back then.

Anyway I too hope this set up works. If not, we will move on....

I have the Vance and Hines complete exhaust now and they fit the 120. I like them and they tuned good at Larry's, so I'll give them a try.

Now if they will just keep the salt off the roads this week!!!

George

Looking at the weather it looks pretty decent except Tuesday, you just might get lucky.

I hope your correct on the weather?

I think my 1st launch will be in front of your house, headin towards your dads! The road is smoother that way.

Listen for me at 2, 3 or 4am. and let me know if you can hear any clutch slip.

Where can I find info in case I have to get a AIM's 480 lbs. clutch spring?

I'll be listening for you also. Once you make a couple passes stop in and have a cup of coffee.

Will do Oldmsocko. I'll have to shut down the launch in front of your house
so I can stop by the time I get to the end of the street!! Darn HD rear brakes!!

Hey Mike, you still awake?? Got another question or thought.

What do you think about havin "Larry's" breakin it in on the dyno?? I know Jamestown is goin to do the "heat cycles", but I don't have the "temper" (wifes words) to put 1000 miles on it with maybe a sub par map?? Any thoughts?? Anybody??

I can't see why not, Shannon seems like a pretty sharp person. You could give them a call and see what they think. I agree with you about having to ride it with a sub par map, a lot of bad things can be done during that period.

Well I called "Larry's HD" yesterday afternoon.

He wants to see a min. of 500 road miles on it before the dyno. He also is just about done with dyno's till spring, around March. All his dyno air is sucked from the outside and it is getting too cold in the dyno room for a good dyno. He said to call him again in March and he'll get it done.

He has put a 120R in a Trike and he knew that customer was going to be a aggresive rider, so they put a heavy clutch in it and designed, machined a hyd. clutch for it. Said he would do the same for me, if needed.

He also said the Trike loves the 120R.

The HD shop has been sending me pics of the progress, looks like it is all put back together. Will call them today to see what the scoop is?

Later, George.

I am sooo jealous of you guys. But, I am looking forward to my stage IV kit I think they are going to start today. I just feel I need the warranty for another year or so.
I will continue to watch this thread for developments with the project.

JJ, don't be so jealous, enjoy the fun with us. In fact I think it was you that started this thread?

I am also thinkin about a Stage IV in my Heritage so let me know how yours works out.

Called the dealer this mornin. Trike is done. Doing test runs now and tweakin the map. But, it is so cold to ride (30deg.) that they wait till the afternoon to put the test miles on. If the snow and road salt holds off, I should get it back early next week.

Later, George.

I figured they might be shutting down the dyno which is why I figured you would need to give them a ring, sound like a good thing they have experience tuning a 120R in a trike, especially clutch experience.

Not all dyno operators are comfortable breaking in a fresh engine on the dyno, with trike dynos being like a needle in a hay stack it is doubly tough. At least it sounds like Jamestown is going to tweak the tune before setting you loose.

Well the hits just keep on coming. as they were taking the engine apart to put in th stage IV kit they noticed something wrong with the old lifters and after more investigation apparently there were metal shavings throughout the engine and oil pump with grooving in the crank as well as rods etc. so i guess i will be starting fresh.
Sure slowed my idea of going for a ride yesterday down in a hurry.
the whole thing is if i had not wanted to do this kit how long down the path would it have went undetected and of course out of warranty at the same time im sure. looks like i will be ordering the extended warranty for sure now.

Wow!! Really sorry to hear that!

How much longer down the road? JJ, it was ready to go anytime. You are lucky it didn't go while on the road.

Harley has had some lifter issues, for some reason they made a change back in I believe it was 2011. They went from a ending letter of B to C, I can only figure they found a cheaper way for someone to make them. I used to like their B lifter, I won't touch a C with a 10 foot poll.

Nope, not yet. Went to the dealer Thursday to check on it.
The mechanic was on the road with it at the time. He came back while I was there.
It sounded real good. I went out in the shop and watched him tweak some fuel cells around the 3000/4000 range. Richin it up there. He said "it is the best Trike I ever rode".
He let the motor cool off and then headed out again. Should get it back early next week, but they are closed Sun. and Monday. Paid my bill and left happy, sounds great.

Called Roeders in Monroeville, Ohio up by Sandusky about a dyno. Said the samething about the 500 miles, but said they have heat and would dyno down to 20 degrees.

Have you heard anything about them? They used to own the HD dealership where Madhatters is now. I had my Lowrider dino'ed there back in 2005 but don't know about the new shop?

JJ, how many miles were on the bad engine?

That is the original shop in Monroeville were it all started. I know they still do a lot of motor work. Look at their site and give them a call. roederracing.com They are 40 mi. north of me been their several times seem like good people I think one of the boys still runs it.

I did call them. Nice enough on the phone. Do you know anything about their tuner, or anybody that has had a tune done there??

Thank's.

80 I just turned the 10k on the mileage. This event certainly confirms my reasoning for a warranty.

Yea in your case it sure does. I don't wish that on anybody.

Did you ask the dealer about you payin the differance and gettin a stage IV out the gate?.....

I have been thinking about that. I mean it is basicly a rebuild and they should pay for the labor except for the tuning. But on the other hand that could bring in a multitude of inspectors and I would end up with no warranty service at all.

Have you found out who is going to fix the motor yet?
Is it the dealer or Moco? Some have got a whole new motor from Moco.

When I had work done, (stageIII) on the Heritage, I bought RPM warranty. It's through the HD Dealer and it covers the engine if it's Screamin Eagle parts. Just ask them about it?

I have not had to use it so...... don't know how good it is? There is also an option for the tires, but I didn't get that.

I know you got a lot on your mind, and will do what is best for you.

Good luck and please keep us up to date.

Later, eighty80.
