Any Harley conversion HOG members here?

Yo goddesses and dudes,
Any of you HOG members and had your Harley triked and struck any problems still riding with your local HOG Club? I wrote an article about my Ultra getting a Champion kit which was rejected because I mentioned Champion and this web site. Have rejigged it so am now awaiting acceptance or further rejection from my local HOG magazine. Just wonder if that is a precursor to "you might want to ride with another club!" Any comments appreciated.:no::censored::confused:

YEA!!! I'm been a HOG member for several years. I bought my first HD a v rod and there was an acceptance issue with some club members right away. First it was the its not a real Harley! Then it was the 3 gallon tank, which I changed first chance I had. I was living in La and the HOG club I joined the Cajun HOGs are supper folks and I fit in right away. I brushed off the few insults with my challenge to ride for PINK SLIPS with no takers. Now I live in Austin , Texas and joined one of the local HOGs. I did real good here until I put on the FRANKENSTEIN TRIKE conversion last November. I've had a couple of questions about keeping up in place with 3 second intervals. I told the road captains that I did not feel comfortable riding that close. Oh and from day #1 , I get to ride in the back of the pack just because. I like the chance to ride the many back roads which I would never have found by myself but I'm not interested in close formation riding because I don't get to sight see because its a job keeping close formation. The big attraction is being with people who are familiar with the local area and know where the good eating joints are located and most of the members are A 1 people. I plan on staying in for a long time and I volunteer as much as possible, always something going on so no big problem because I ride a HD VROD TRIKE, chrome is fastest. curley

A couple of years ago, Mike and I went for a weekend ride with a group of HD riders that he goes out riding with. Other wives were along, but the leader asked me to ride at the back. No problem to me, whatever makes them comfortable. By the first gas stop, he asked me to come up and ride right behind him so he could see what they were all talking about. At the next gas stop, he apologized! He said he had thought a trike was not a motorcycle, but he wished his handled in the curves as well as mine did!!! LOL. No more issues.

I really think that -- giving them a chance to watch and learn -- your trike will soon be totally accepted by all of them!

THANKS NANA but you know I was not the one who ran off the road and got stuck last week. But I was that one who stopped and helped the 2 wheel HD hog get back on the road. And I hope that when everyone else is 69 years young that they are still riding something. I love my v rod trike and I don't give a damn what anyone else thinks or says, if I wanted a behemoth air head I'd get one I got rid of my last moto guzzi last year and don't miss the top heavy torque rolling beast at all. Most people love my trike, a guy in a pick up truck pulled up and blew his horn while giving a thumbs up sign. No one else got that sign. Keeping up the Riding .

It's really as most things are a education thing. Most 2 wheelers have never riden a trike nor know much about them. But as we can by the rapid growth of both conversions and factory HD's. There will always be the few that will never accept us. Their lose. Most of us have been a 2 wheels as long or longer than they have. More to the Hog member part no issues from the Miami chapter.

I've heard some people say that if they had to go to a Trike they would stop riding, but when that time comes I guarantee you that they will purchase a Trike. I remember when some people used to think the same about the big Touring bikes, but now everyone that likes to ride are getting them for the comfort & storage. I figure they might as well join us now, because they'll be joining us later..ThumbUp

Try your local CMA chapter. You will be welcomed w/open arms-can ride where ever you want in the group.
Our road captain rides a trike!
There's now 4 trikes and 1 sidecar in our chapter, no animosity-just good fellowship

First off, been riding since I was 16 years old, now I'll be 60 this year...and I'm not counting the mini bike years before licensed....I'm on my 29th Harley...not counting the metrics I've owned ( never had a Britt bike, ummm) anyway, with all this being said...anyone out there can Kiss My Rosie Red Fanny of they don't like what I ride...I have nothing left to prove ( not that any of us do anyway)...have three Iron Butts...etc...road all over this USA...only have a few states left to fill in the USA...and I know there are more riders that have more than I ever will.....

I ride what I like, when I like...I have no problems with what anyone else rides...Harley, Honda, Kaw, Suzi etc....motorocycles are motorcycles...I love them all...it's some of the riders I don't care for....anyone that would bust someone's chops about what they rider is a jerk! And I don't care to ride with them anyway.....

As for riding in the back, I don't have any problems with that...first a trike will stop quicker than most 2 wheelers...
2ND, I can see what's going on up ahead...and sometimes I like that fact that I can, and have extra time to stop...some of these loud mouth know it alls can't ride worth a fiddlers hoot....

OK, OK off my soapbox...sorry for the rant....

Ride Safe All..

Oh, Life Member HOG....

Now Mister Kentucky Blue and Chiefbuc I do think if we were not separated by the miles we'd be agreeing over some of that very fine "medicine" they make in your Kentucky State! Blessings, Ian.

Well you are a bit away from me, but if you do ever get in the "Bluegrass" I'll sure buy...at least the first one :beerchug:

And yes they do make some fine "medicinal" beverage.....

Kentucky Blue, I couldn't have said it better!! You got 10 years on me but sounds like we have the riding history in common from mini bikes up. And I feel the same about the rider wave, I wave at them all from my ultra and sometimes it appears that some are surprised, but they probably love riding their machine as well as I do mine and good for them!!

Ride On!!

I was a little reluctant but was invited to go on a ride to NC for lunch. Only trike in group of nine (ultras, heritage, fat boy and vrod). I volunteered to take the rear going down. Was designated third in group coming back. All were accepting and had many questions about handling. All were suprised
with how well my trike performed. Have been invited and ridden with this group three more times. Trike was center of discussion at lunch. Hang in there.

I just looked at the Auckland HOG March magazine (Google Auckland HOG and look for magazine in margin hit that and then hit March) and you will see my article on triking has been published. Good on them! I'm back in the fold! Lots of claps and smiling faces!!! Ian.

Yea, I was a HOG member for several years. I dropped it, not because of a trike but I was wondering what good it was. I would get a patch each year and a magazine (quarterly). Seems I was just sending the money, nothing more.

Great article Ian! Also very entertaining reading throughout the magazine. Good to know there are so many Harley owners so involved with their rides "down under"!

I rode with the Hog Chapter when I got my first Ultra two wheeler but decided I wanted to ride more than stop at every bar. I joined another club where it didn't matter what you rode. When I no longer could ride two wheels and got the trike, they asked me to ride in the back. After I led a group ride and the two wheelers couldn't keep up, I can ride wherever I want especially when I told them I was only 7 inches wider than their outboard rider pegs. It seemed they were afraid of not being able to see around the trike. The club has 49 active riders and five trikes. The last two years, I have put more miles on from April to October than anyone else in the club.

Ian, it was fun looking through your Aukland HOG Magazine, and particularly good to ready your great article! And I'm betting you will find a day or two this winter to get that new trike out on the road ;)

Kentuckyblue...I couldn't have said it better.....I have been riding since I was 17 am 65 now... Wife and I bought the first Harley trike sold in the Kansas city area and just love it. couldn't keep our Electraglide up safely any more at stops. we ride as often as weather allows including two trips to Sturgis and have been accepted everywhere we have gone with it... I still ride my fatboy alone at times also... We think any biker 2 wheel or three wheel are family... have a great summer riding...........

Welcome aboard. well said

Nope ~ had my Electra Glide Classic upgraded with a Motortrike Gladiator kit and have been accepted well. Guess it helps when your HD dealership sells and installs the Motortrike kits.

USED to ride with a local HOG group. When wife got her trike one of the members asked "Whats the matter, can't ride a real bike". After I explained that her chemotherapy left her hands and feet numb and it was a trike or nothing, and if he ever said anything like that again I'd kick his ass... Oh and by the way, did he consider his 883 a "real bike"? We decided that group just wasn't for us anymore.

The wife liked the Ultra, but she loves the Trike. No health issues here, just a good choice for us. Safety, stability, visibility, comfort and joy! It seems like most just gaff off trikes until they see one up close and personal. Then they get real interested and ask questions. "Screwball" I like your mantra.

Local HOG chapter just fine with trikes. I am one of the chapter's Road Captains.

I always wondered and worried about the acceptance of a trike in any ride group, but haven't experienced any problems. Well....often the other riders do say goofy things like ..."you need to ride sweep" and they don't know that trikes are supposed to ride in the middle...of the pack AND the lane, but I don't mind being in the back...either way. I have found that education helps...i.e. just explain the facts or how trikes are to ride in groups. My one "non-demoniational" bike group even discusses trikes as part of the pre-group ride now. This was all prior to getting a Harley. Then I got a Harely with a Voyager kit.....and didn't hear any problems/comments. However, I didn't ride in the HOG group with it. This year I just got the HD 2011 Tri-Glide. What can they say now...it is ALL HARLEY. So I will be surprised if I get comments.....negative ones, but most of the time my trike attracts attention and questions - usually nice..but the occassional "I will never ride one, but I like it"...yeah right...I think they will someday, but who knows. Harley used to make snow mobiles too! So....."what is a Harley". The main thing I experience is that most 2WMC think a trike is easier to ride, but when they try it...they learn it is not so easy (or not easier and has other trials and tribulations". I have heard people say to me in the same sentence that a trike is for "PU$$YS", but they admire anyone who can ride it cause it is hard and that they may rent one for a long ride to Sturgis....go figure. I think now that Harley is officially making a trike...that it is hard to say it is not a real bike.....or at least they can't say it is not a real "Harely". I am going to post another thread about how people think Trikes have so much trunk space and think we can haul all their junk....just NOT true. My Harley Trike has the same storage as my husbands Ultra. That is the biggest frustration I have encountered with owning a trike.... :)

I"ve been riding since I was 12, Honda Super 50 and I"m 56. I own/ride a sweet "94 Sporster, "06 Dyna Super Custom, and bought the trike "10 Street Glide last Sept. I"ve liked trikes since I was a kid, just thought they were cool. Since buying it I haven"t ridden the other bikes, but I will. IT KICKS ASS!!!! I"m an ex racer , drag and road racing and I ride it like the other bikes. Mostly cruising but sometimes hard or to the limit, either the machines or mine. Have made a couple of charity runs with HOG here in Jersey and have had no problems. Those who would, in my opinion are more of the narrow minded fools that have made this country the joke it SOMETIMES is. Enough Already. Happy riding Everybody!!
