I am familiar with how brakes work and how the ABS system works on these Tri Glides. I have changed my own brakes in my cars and trucks and motorcycles for years. What I don't understand is when you flush the brake fluid in your car or truck, you don't have to activate the ABS unit. Can someone explain the difference to me? What's the difference?

If you don’t cycle the abs unit in your car or truck there is still an amount of trapped fluid. When I was an electrician at Ford one of the machines that I really wanted to understand fully was the brake fluid fill. The machine first pulled a vacuum and then through valving introduced the fluid. There was also an electrical device that the operator would plug into the obdII port. Troubleshooting the basic system was straightforward. I couldn’t find anyone who could explain the obdII device and how it interfaced with the vacuum/fill function. It would have had to hold the abs valves open and then as fluid introduced cycle the valves and pump.

An early Ford and possibly others ABS system actually had a high pressure master cylinder. It was basically an accumulator ? It had a procedure to depressurize before you could remove top. Very dangerous if you removed cap under pressure.

Look like I was wrong in my thinking. Thanks

I think the newer bikes are OBDII? In any case you need a scanner with bi- directional capability. Or do it the Old Road Dog way: Change and bleed fluid. Ride, panic stop. Go back bleed. Ride, panic stop. Repeat until your happy.

With a digital technician it opens the abs module and lets all the fluid run through. It is the only reason this next winter I will take mine to a dealership Or a capable independent shop to flush my brake system. I would do that to a car also.
