Harley Trike Oil Coolers

Everyone is talking about Maximum oil temps, What is the Minimum temps??
Sometimes Too low is just as harmful as too high....

Oil temps 195 and above Will ensure the moisture is evaporated

Yes, 195 should be close to the minimum, and 220-230 is a really comfortable temp for the human and the engine.

However, most Tri-Glides, including the waterheads, are running temps between 290 and 330 from the factory. That is too hot!

I would bet dollars to donuts that an engine running at 300+ will have problems sooner than one running at 180...and the one running at 300 will also not run nearly as strong.

Bottom line, a person can do a ton of stuff to cool down their oil temps on a TG and they are not going to have a problem of it running the oil temps below 195. :)

I am currently running a Harley oil on a 2008 103 cu in ultra classic triked by MotorTrike . I was running down the interstate doing about 75 mph in 6th gear and looked at my oil temp gauge reading 286. I realize that pushing a 1125 lbs + me takes a lot , but on a 90 degree day that seemed a bit high.
I have been looking at the oil coolers that are out there, oil bud , ultra cool, jagg, etc.. Anyone have any suggestions or advice? I am running the Axtell oil pressure relief kit also.
Leaning toward the Ultra Cool because of the fan assist and 19 rows of cooling, but I am willing to listen to any advise.

Thanks , Riderdave:cool:
Jagg:
is a good product,1) Harley routes dirty oil threw the cooler first before the oil filter, I like jaggs way better ,they go threw the oil filter first then the cooler.
Also a 40 degree drop with fan assist.
Buds:
is a quit impressive oil cooler that goes under the bike
35 degrees drop without any fan,so stop and go traffic will not
Effect cooling. And it will take a shotgun blast ! So any rock kicked up from the streets doesn't have a chance to penetrate the cooler . Just saying tough stuff ! See videos
Baker:
makes a 1.5 extra qt oil pan that's impressive . Two chambers upper and lower ,as the oil cools .

To start with, my cooling journey started with stage one .
Decat head pipe, air cleaner and a good fuelmoto tune. Added the biggest s-69 (big schlong) stainless steel medical grade filter . That flows 7 times more oil than any paper filter. Clean and reuse, also built in fins adds cooling . All that makes things nicer. I'm leaning on buds as my next upgrade. Hope this helps

i just had a oil bud installed on my 2022 Tri Glide my oil temps were running 300 degrees in this 90 degree weather and nearly 100% humidity. My oil temp now is reading from the ECM is now at 255 degrees .The oil bud doesn't detract from the looks of the trike either. The cost is about 900.00 but it is worth it.My mechanic installed it and it looks good tucked away between the slipons you will not be disappointed. Now all i got left to do is an 1*1/2 DK customs tank lift and decat the header. 1 more note i also have the Love Jugs mighty mites installed and still could only get no better than 300 degrees oil temp in hot weather but that all changed when the oil bud was installed .

i dont know but i will get back to you soon.Iwill be riding in similar weather conditions this weekend.FYI the oil temp i read from the ECM was in stop and go traffic so i expect even lower temperatures when i'm on the freeway.
I wasn’t aware of being able to get oil temperature readings from the ECM. How is that accomplished?

i have a Harley Screaming Eagle pro tuner the newest one that is bluetooth that allows me to keep my warranty it can be programmed for engine temp ,oil temp , throttle position ,rpm ,etc and i also have an infared temp gun

I don't understand the temperatures that I am getting. I have a DK oil cooler and relocator kit on my 19 Tri Glide it's been very hot in North Carolina this week mid to upper 90s. 80 to 85% humidity. My oil temperature has never reached 195 on the longest ride. It climbs close when I get into City traffic but I've never reached 195. Head temperature stays around 275 to 280. A little warmer and city traffic but I've never topped 300. I have Dakota digital dash which has an oil temperature sensor and head temperature and read out on the dash. I know it's pretty close because when I get back I immediately check it with a temperature reading dipstick and they're both within a degree or two of each other. I have changed both sensors and no difference in temperatures.
Even without the oil cooler, I never reached 200 degrees

I frankly don't believe stories of 280 to 300 OIL TEMP. Engine or cylinder temp sure. Not oil temp. I have never seen anything higher than 230 at the dip stick on my flrt, even in 95 degree FL roasting.
Also, to my knowledge there is no oil temp sensor from the factory on the m8. There absolutely is not one on my 2020 114.

I concur. My oil temperature sensor came with the Dakota Digital dash and replaces the oil drain plug in the pan. I've never got the oil temp to 200 let alone 230.

I would add that 90 percent of the time I am at 200 to 205. Your bike is water cooled so it makes sense the oil would run a bit cooler.
