What is the best air intake upgrade?

Ah, you have a specialized set up that AN made for 3 years.

Unless you change the filter element, you can only use the factory cover.

What are your thoughts about trimming the outer rubber ring? It looks like the bolt pattern is different and I would not be able to mount a newer filter to the existing bracket.

If your talking about the ring on the air filter I would say NO

That is what seals it to the cover

The existing stock cover does not touch the outer seal at all.
