Yesterday was the first time I've ever been stopped by a LEO in 58 years of riding, I guess you never know when it will happen. We were on our way to breakfast around 8 AM and on one of our favorite twisty roads to ride. We saw 3 motorcycle police about a 1/4 mile away, slowed down and as we got closer one of them stepped into the roadway and motioned for us to pull over. We were going the speed limit, had all our safety gear on, I know the bike is epa compliant, WTH ?

After looking the bike over he told us our mufflers were illegal, hmmm, HD Screaming Eagle Street Cannons. He proceeded to tell us that the motorcycle statutes in Florida require the bike to have no modifications to the exhaust system, how it comes out of the factory is the only legal way. I pointed out the mufflers are HD and EPA compliant, that didn't mean a thing to him and I'm starting to get more than a little pissed but kept my tongue.

He said since I co-operated with him I would only get a warning, I'm sure he knew that if he wrote a ticket I would have met him in court and had a field day. Anyway, we found out later that day the residents along that road had been calling the Sheriffs office on a regular basis because of speeding noisy bikes. The Sheriffs office got a "Grant" from the state to conduct "Safety Inspections" along that road and I became a statistic for them, as we were wrapping our up conversation a pair of crotch rockets came screaming down the road and he never even looked up, lol. I guess it was my time to get handled by the "Man"

I'm researching the statutes I was warned about, when I find them I'm going to print them out and carry them with me, I think he was BSing and knew it.

The best thing to do is let him go thru the motions , say nothing , as you will never see him again. If he gave ya a ticket , take pix of the muffler lettering and give it to the judge. Don’t forget to ride the tri to court :D

Thank the ''A'' Holes that think loud pipes save lives for the pull over...:(...

My thoughts too Jack but I didn't go there, we just wanted to get out of there and make breakfast before the specials were over, lol.

When I first moved to Florida I got pulled over by a State Trooper on a Harley

He was bustin my chops over this and that

When I asked him if he was going to write me a ticket He said nah, I just wanted to look at your bike:p

When i had one of the First Spyder's in Jersey 2008....I can't count how many times i was pulled over......It was combination of curiosity and are those things street legal......

So you took one for the team so to speak.:) I happen to agree that those that think their straight piped bikes sound great are causing trouble for everyone. And in case they don't know, they actually sound down right crappy anyway. It takes just the right combination of muffler and baffle to get a great sounding bike. Plus, many of those straight pipe things don't even run correctly. Today, back pressure is part of what makes a bike running like it should. Too bad they can't understand just how bad those bikes actually sound. Chances a good that they can't hear anyway.

Last year three of us ALL ON GOLDWINGS got pulled over, and the LEO put some kind of a sound device near our muff's...We just stood there and smiled .....The police just shook their heads in mis-belief....They thought that the sound device was broken ......Toooooooooooooooooo Quiet!

Ronnie

One year at americade they stuck the night stick up the muffler, if no baffles were there you got a invitation.

Quite often at the Army arsenal near me [Picatinny]They will test fire new cannons , The sounds bring back happier days;)....Now they have to issue a warning and use extra safety precautions after a stray piece of 105? went though the roof of a house off bace and killed the family's cat.....

OK, found the statute the warning was issued for, they were just getting their 'quota' in my opinion for the folks that were complaining.

Statute 316.610(1) Any police officer may at any time, upon reasonable cause to believe that a vehicle is unsafe or not equipped as required by law, or that its equipment is not in proper adjustment or repair, require the driver of the vehicle to stop and submit the vehicle to an inspection and such test with reference thereto as may be appropriate.

:cop:..AKA.....Probable Cause....

Dang Gary, I have followed your trike at Maggie Valley. Definitely not loud enough to draw attention from any LEO... it just has a good rumble to it! It was your turn in the barrel for sure!
