lift kit

This is the first time I've heard of a warranty claim being denied due to a lift.

Possibly it was because the lift was installed incorrectly? There is no way a properly installed lift can cause damage to a belt, therefore, there is no basis for the lift to void the warranty.

Of course it is not worth it to fight a legal battle with them...but if the lift was installed correctly, then a claim being denied because of it is bogus.

The other side of the coin is that belts are not covered under warranty. It is a wear item. Many times HD will replace a belt on a low mileage bike/trike, just as a PR move.

We have well over 100 HD Dealerships install our Comfort Lift™ Kit on brand new Trikes...I doubt any of them would deny a claim. Those that are not familiar with the Comfort Lift™ will not even know, 99% of the time, that there is a Lift installed, since it looks so much like the OEM bracket.

I would like to hear more about why/how the belt lost it's teeth...it certainly was not from the lift kit. The belt was not adjusted right, or there was some road debris that got caught in it. If it was road debris, the riders insurance should cover the cost of repair. A photo of the belt would be nice. (I guess it could be from a defective belt, but those are EXTREMELY rare)

Kevin

That is what I though. H-D does make 'customer satisfaction' adjustments from time to time when conditions warrant it even if not technically a warranty item. However, I seriously doubt that any ESP contract would cover a drive belt for any reason. Those guys fight tooth and nail to not cover anything. And you do not have the Federal Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act to give any protection with and ESP. An ESP is not a warranty - it is a service contract.

I agree....But to Paraphrase Paul Harley.....Wait for the rest of the story...

WoW !!!! 10.2hrs. Last time I replaced one it took me a little over 3 hours. Had one replaced on the road at Horney Toad in Temple, Texas a couple 4 yrs ago and was a little under $700.00. And that was installing a HD heavy duty Kevlar belt used on sidecar rigs vs the OEM style belt.

Man I'm in the wrong business.

I was at the HD dealership the other day. One of the parts sales guys was talking to the dealership owner about a getting and installing "Legend" lift kits. I looked up Legend lift kit. Not impressed at all. Nowhere in thier add did they mention Comfort. Just lifting and easier steering. Way more money. I'm going to approach the dealership and see if they would install DK Convertible Comfort lift. I need the lift because I have a crappy driveway. I need Comfort because I have a crappy back. If I had J&S Jack, I would install it myself. Jerry

What is the advantage of a lift kit?

Not being a Harley owner, I thought I would ask. :)

Levels out the Trike. HD Trikes have the rear drooping a bit. Leveling it out not only looks better, it give more clearance for the tail-pipes not to drag going in a driveway.

Makes it a bit easier to steer...less input needed on the bars to turn.

With the Comfort Lift™ it changes the angle of the shocks, helping them to absorb more of the smaller bumps, resulting in a plusher ride quality.

More details HERE.

Yeah, the ESP is actually regulated by State Insurance Commissioners, since it is considered insurance.

I have had really good experience with the ESP. Never had to fight them, never had a claim denied, and I've used them a lot. Every ESP I've had has more than paid for itself. That said, I do not do more than a Stage I on my engines...more than a Stage I is where they can start getting finicky on what they cover.

Yes, the Legend lift kit is a copy of DK's Original Lift Kit. As far as I know only one (un-named) company has quasi copied our Convertible Comfort Lift™ Kit so far.

Give us a call or email, and we'll look up a Dealership near you that installs our Kits.

Yeah, it is pretty hard to mess up, but it is possible if one does not follow the instructions.

We add new Dealerships, almost everyday, that are buying and installing the Comfort Lift™. Unfortunately at least a couple of times a month we spend an exorbitant amount of time on the phone with a dealership saying the same thing 50 different ways..."Please read the instructions or watch the install video". Some "Techs" at dealerships seem to think they know everything, and therefore do not need to read the instructions. :xzqxz:

Isn't that a guy thing? :xzqxz:

Kevin. I received the e-mail sent by DK. You gave some dealerships that install the trike lifts. Does that mean that they actually sell and have in stock the lift kits? or should I purchase the lift directly from DK? Thanks Jerry

Hi Jerry,

Just saw this, everyone else is gone. I don't know how to get into the dealer list. If you email back and ask them, on Monday they will be able to let you know which dealers on the list are stocking dealers.

We have dealerships that stock, other dealerships that order as needed, and still other dealerships that install, but want the Customer to supply the part.

If you wanted to order it from us, any of them will install it if you bring it in to them...but the stocking dealers would probably rather that you bought it from them.

Appreciate your business!

Kevin

Thanks Kevin. One of the dealers that is on your list as installers is about 45 minutes from me. I could call there tomorrow and ask them if they stock the lift kits or not. If they don't, I'll order the lift kit on Monday. Thanks for your reply. Jerry

Cool! I believe you'll be pleased with the improvement.

Hey 520fd you will like the lift kit. And by the way the J & S trike jack won't help you install a lift kit, the rear needs to be free floating so to speak, I guess you could use it jack it up and then put jack stands under the trunk frame member, most just use a regular floor jack to get it up and set the stands.

Oh well, looks like you are having a dealer do it so you are good to go, enjoy the lift when installed, I love mine and know quite a few in this area that have them and they liked them alot

All for now Trampas

I called the dealer In Coralville, Iowa and asked the if they have them in stock or would I have to buy it. They said they have some in stock, but they said they didn't fit the 2017 trikes. Among other's. I asked them if the have the regular lift or the Convertible lifts. They said they didn't know. I know it makes a difference. The convertible lifts are made to fit the 2017's. I guess I'll have to make a trip up to Coralville on Monday or Tuesday to see what they have.

Information over the phone is very spotty at best, Most times a road trip to the dealer is the best way to go....ThumbUp

Sounds like you should buy a Convertible Comfort Lift™ Kit and carry it it for them to install. Then they will see that there are ones that work with the '17-ups.

Same dealer for me. I drive right by a much closer dealer because ... (insert one of many reasons here). The Coralville dealer has been nice to me. I may visit them for a lift install.

They told me that they won't work on the 2017's They said they didn't want to stock a lift that won't fit all of them. They showed me the lift that they are selling and installing. It came from "trikestuff" ?? Bright red in color. Had a lot of holes on the end that the shock mounted to. Looks to me like a weak point with all those holes.

Well, I Put a DK lift kit on my 2016 tri glide have driven over 5K miles so far.....one of the BEST things I've done for the comfort and handling of the trike!!!! Really! You wouldn't think raising the butt up an 1 1/2" would make that much difference = It certainly does! (and no more draggin' the pipes going into driveways or gas stations either)

....got kit on Amazon (its just 2 each metal plates).

Salute!

Why wouldn't Harley void the warranty for installing a lift kit. It wasn't on the bike when new, It changes the geometry of the bike.

In my opinion Harley has every right to void the warranty

He said,I'm not sure they did, they told me IF they tried to warranty it that Harley would kick it back for more information or send a rep to check it out.

So does adding a lift kit void the warranty?

The absence of any foreign object getting between the belt and pulley would indicate a faulty belt of faulty adjustment.

When installing the lift kit it MAY be necessary to re-adjust the drive belt.

Since a lift kit changes the swingarm angle and this would allow the belt to become loose, just as weight of rider and passenger will tighten the belt.

When a loose belt slips, there go the teeth.:badmood:

It usually happens between shifting gears when you unload and load the belt rapidly on downshift.

What adjustment would need to be made to the belt?

What adjustment would need to be made to the belt?

Welcome to Trike Talk ' depending upon what part broke they can void the warranty' The adjustment would be belt tension . that said I put 45,000 miles with a lift kit on my 2011 Triglide and never adjusted the belt

I have a lift kit on my 17 and while it was in for a warranty issue on the idle problem I asked them to check the belt tension. They said it was within spec

I too have the lift kit on my 2017 Tri Glide and have bought the Harley belt tension tool to verify and be able to refute any baloney that the lift kit would cause a belt failure because I measure it at each service interval and record it as being within spec :D

Works fine on mine! No issues at all. You can pick your shock angle.

Glad we have many vendors to choose from .... and appreciate the support we get from vendors here!

This bike had 2400 miles on it,wouldn't consider this an item that should be replaced at such low mileage.Considering HD recommends belt replacement at the 50,000 mile service.

I agree. 2400 miles is ridiculous considering that the only one I know of being changed was my own at well over 100.000 miles and then more for looks than anything. There were no teeth missing but the outside was getting weather checked. I suspect there is more to the story - like maybe the belt wasn't properly adjusted after the lift kit was added. As someone else noted, if a toothed belt slips it's curtains.

How much does the tool cost? Makes sense to me.

Thanks, Bob
