To All Our Vets...

Sully, every time I look at the stats, it kicks me hard. I know that this is just one event in the history of war, but I was there and still suffering the results of being a boots on the ground soldier. Jim

I was Boots on the ground [66].......And i think the country is still suffering the results of that war....IE.. The lying presidents getting us into that mess, And the disrespect for the Military it brought on.. There wasn't one North Vietnamese who was going to come over here and blow up buildings , And if anyone still believes in the Domino-Theory, Or the Golf of Tonkin...They are still waiting for their Elio to be delivered...

No I didn't, I was born five years too late, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express...:). I served from 1979-2009, but too late for Nam (a good thing I think).

Only in country for about two days. One air mission off the west coast. Tracked ballistic missile submarines during the cold war days.

Thanks James, I will look them up. I keep a membership in the Legion but don't really stay too active, just visits once and awhile at a couple different ones. Dropped the VFW after a few years. I got tired of all the crap they sent out trying to get you to buy all the time.

It is amazing how something just jumps out at you and you have to read it all the way through. That is what happened with this thread.

I am NOT a VN vet but I was in the Air Force ‘73 – 79’. I will say that I am a VN Era Vet but I am very adamant about NOT using the term ‘VN Vet’. I feel that it would dishonor those that actually were in VN, “Boots on the Ground”, if I were to say that. I also have no respect for anyone that would or will falsely use that term to get attention.

I am pretty much a loner, apparently have been much of my life. Only had one or two friends in school, and none of those were what you would call “lifelong”. So when it comes to losing ‘friends’ in the war, I am just not sure. I guess I say that to get to this.

My sister and brother-in-law were visiting us and the VN Wall ‘traveling wall’ was in town for the weekend. I had never gone to ‘The’ wall for the reason that I mentioned above. But I have always wanted to visit. So we went. A motorcycle group was there as hosts and as we walked into the field, a silence was cast over the whole area. As I stepped up closer to the wall, I just broke down and cried, much as I am doing as I write this. I never expected it to hit me like that. I was totally awe-stricken by the sheer number of names on that wall. It seemed like it goes on forever.

Yeah, I volunteered my service to my country. I served my time. I would have gone had they sent me. But ‘I’ didn’t have to go the VN. I was one of the lucky ones. Or at least I have thought so. I have the utmost respect for those that served in VN. And THAT is why I will never refer to myself as a VN Vet. I DO NOT have the right to.

THANK YOU for your service. Thank you for your courage. Thank you for your honor. Thank you for your willingness to give your lives for others.

Running From Irma

We closed up our Cape Coral home early (Tuesday) and headed our in the RV. I-75 was still pretty busy but didn't have much trouble and all the gas stations were still open. Ended up in Cottondale Florida to sit this thing out.

Camper next to me had seen my VN sticker on the back of my RV. He asked me about it which started a conversation. Bobby B. (USMC) had not talked to anyone about his 3 years in country until the two of us stood in this campground and chatted it up. I found a campaign ribbon sticker later and gave to him which I'm sure he will put on the back of his RV.

We exchanged emails later and I'm sure will stay in touch. Him and his wife just began full time traveling in their RV and if Irma doesn't blow our home apart we will be selling and doing the same for a few years.

This friendship began because of that $2.00 VN sticker on the back of my motor home!

Maybe someone can explain this to me, I watched this video earlier today and I am a bit confused, not by the ceremony, but that two individuals being pinned were not in Navy uniforms, one was Air Force and the other Army and they were pinned as CPOs and carried their Navy cover. It was a very nice ceremony.

In the military it's tradition that advancement in grade can't be worn on the uniform until pinned on by a superior officer. Pay date and date of rank are the date of the order to advance in rank. The pinning ceremony could be as long as a month after the orders are published and can be a joint ceremony. CPO is the acronym for Chief Petty Officer. Hope this sheds some light and enjoy the ride.

The Navy use to allow other services E-7s to voluntarily participate in Chiefs initiation/transition. Afterwards they were afforded all of the military courtesies normally given to Navy Chief Petty Officers. This practice was stopped about 12 years ago, but I'm guessing the Pentagon folks have revived it. I was a Navy Chief Petty Officer (or above) for 21 years of my 30 year career and I never liked the practice. Primarily because the other services folks didn't have the same experiences that Navy personnel had getting there and their frame of reference was different. And, to me honorary titles just sucked....

Thank you. I got it now, that's not fair in my opinion to the men and women of the Navy who actually 'Earned' CPO.

That's my take on it too. When I was initiated in 1989 there was a Marine that went through it with us and I had a hard time accepting him as an honorary Chief. He was a nice guy and all, but he earned the title by just going through 8 weeks of initiation with us.

I am done watching NFL games. I will not follow my team any longer, I will not ever attend another game, nor will it be broadcast on any of my home TV's.

It is one thing when a handful of overpaid players refuse to stand for the National Anthem and disrespect this country, especially our veterans. But now when Miami Dolphins owner Steve Ross supports players that show this type of disrespect, that was the last straw for me. Ross said the protesting players are "smart young men of character who want to make our world a better place for everyone. They wanted to start a conversation and are making a difference in our community, including working with law enforcement to bring people together".

By making this statement I can only draw the conclusion that kneeing during the National Anthem has something to do with racial issues or intercity issues, but when I see them do it I only see spoiled overpaid young men who have never defended our country disrespecting our country and it pisses me off.

I am only one old veteran. My opinion will never count, nor will my withholding a few dollars from NFL purchases ever mean anything to a rich Steve Ross. However, it will make me feel better to be done with the NFL.

I, too, have had my fill and will be joining with you. Jerry Jones has stated that any Dallas Cowboy who disrespects the flag and what it stands for will have to find employment elsewhere in the NFL, but that will not apply to the teams they play. So, enough of the NFL, and Dallas, Texas for that matter.

The players are disrespectful to the military and the country and the 'Greedy' NFL will want to line their pockets with the money from the sales of 'Salute to the Services' merchandise. They can stick it where the sun doesn't shine, don't use our military to make money.

Thank you for your service.

Thanks to all for your comments. One of the best things about this forum is the FREEDOM to express issues that are upsetting or unfair to our veterans. I am an RVer and active on a couple of those forums. They are very restrictive if you want to bring up a subject like this, too political.

As a veteran of 30 years of service, I won't watch one of these games or buy any of their merchandise until they start acting like Americans and stand for our National Anthem. I still can't believe those knuckle heads stood for God Save the Queen and kneeled for our anthem. Don't they realize that the reason the USA exists is because of the oppression heaped upon our forefathers by Britain? I guess history is optional in school nowadays.
