Dealer service

Now first off this is not a thread about who does and who does not do their own service.Just a little FYI.While working on my buddies 09 Tri Glide I went to remove the drain plug for the primary and it was just slightly more than finger tight,the trans plug was even looser.I removed the oil drain plug and it was kinda tight coming all the way out.And it was coated with teflon tape.All three drain plugs had teflon tape.
He purchased this Tri used from a reputable dealer so it kinda surprised me.So those of you who let the dealer do your service it would be a good idea to know where these three plugs are located and know what the torque specs are.And save your self a problem out on the road and just double check them when you get it back.

I truly believe that the guys that do oil changes at the dealers do not even own a torque wrench and even if they did it probably not be calibrated. I think they use the Teflon tape so they wont have to tighten the plug too much in the fear of stripping it and then they would be in trouble. That is why I do my own oil changes and such.

How do you know the dealer did it?
I've known some that will clean up a trade in and that's the extent of the "service" prior to putting it up for sell!

I remember when the Spyders first came out, [2008] And then quite a few of the new to tools, Owners would try to change their own oil, And use a Torq's to remove the Allen drain plug, Then strip it and blame the dealer for over tighten
the plug and causing it to strip...:laugh:

Well when he bought it it had a list of service that the dealer said they did ,so not wanting to go into how do you know we have to take their word for that.

A guy at work stripped his oil drain plug and about crapped when he found out how much the dealer wanted to r&r his pan.I think the pan alone is around $ 400.He asked me if I could fix it for him,so i made a special stainless steel plug that would cut new oversized 1/2-20 threads then rinsed his oil pan with kerosene,installed an over sized drain plug and it saved him a bunch of money.

NAPA has all kinds and sizes of re-threading plugs for just those occasions...Been there 'Striped that...:blush:

Thats what i started with but it so tight going in i was afraid it would split the pan so that why i went that route.
