Will a defective radiator cap cause the coolant recovery tank to overflow. After replacing coolant I have coolant dripping around the recovery tank. 2006 gl1800

Thanks for any help

Pressure releases the radiator cap which sends the coolant to the overflow tank. A faulty cap will release the coolant too soon resulting in an overflowing reservoir. If your machine isn't over heating the cap is certainly suspect.

Putting too much in the recovery tank when the bike is cold can also cause an overflow.

Any time the pressure in the radiators / cooling system exceeds the cap's pressure rating excess is sent to that recovery tank. When it cools, it draws just enough back into the cooling system until all is "in balance".

It's a constant transference that takes place in heating and cooling cycles and the level in the tank when cold needs to be low enough to allow the overflow when up to operating temperature.

Are you sure it is the overflow tank? The 1800s have probably over 30 clamps throughout the cooling system and are known for having various leaks due to loose clamps.

Get 1 of these, they are cheap and worth the money

Thanks for all the responses. I talked to the service dept of A local Honda dealer and they suggested two places to look. The first one was where the coolant hose plugs into the coolant tank. That was the problem. I extended the hose about (4) inches to allow much easier access of needed again.
