Help with sick 103

Long story short, I upgraded my 09 Ultra 96 c.i. to a 103when I Triked my bike out in 09. Now I'm hearing a knocking in my motor. Harley tech said it sounded like a wrist pin or a rod bearing. Question is should I rebuilt it or go up to a 107 or 113.

You cant rebuild the crank or rods, mother Harley made it so you have to buy the whole crank assembly, around 1400.00 just for that. I just went thru that whit my 2009 triglide 103. It is now an S&S 106. Just breaking it in so don't have any input on it yet.

Sorry to hear this.

Unfortunately, the majority of HD "techs" are NOT mechanics. I would get a second opinion from an experienced mechanic.

If you do need a new crank, for me, it would be the perfect opportunity to drop in a crate S&S motor.

Also to consider if you want to stay with a HD motor you can buy a rebuild from the factory if you want to stay stock. So many options its hard to give you one answer. A lot depends on what you want. HD 120R is also a possibility if you want to spend some bucks.

How deep are your pockets? Do a lot of research. Ask a lot of questions. There are excellent kits and there are excellent builders. Am looking at doing the same thing and I'm find my biggest problem is finding a tuner whose dyno can handle a trike. Tony

A lot of good advise here. Some things to keep in mind when going bigger, what else will not be up to the task of the added HP and torque. Stray too far from stock and you need to consider clutch, the stock clutch is marginal as it is for a stock 103 in a Trike. Bolt in a 124 and now your looking at throttle body and injectors plus a good extra plate clutch setup with heavy spring and possibly a billet pressure plate.

One thing that is a given, the stock Harley crank is a throw away item. Right now S&S is building the best replacement crank for the Twin Cam.

I had a 110 with the same clutch set up.... didn't work well. now have a 480lb. spring and still not great under hard throttle.

Heard a lot of bad stuff about the 110, so I'm thinking a 107 or the 113 with cams, but need a good clutch but My left hand is not very strong due to medical reasons.

I put a Barnett extra plate clutch, 480# spring, & Clutch Wiz in mine, & the pull was slightly less than with the stock unit. I didn't measure the pull, but it feels better.

The 107 or 113 are still a built engine using your cases. If you start into a 113 you want to get a good crank and have the Timken bearing conversion done to the left side of the crank.

I don't need a new engine like joelin, but I have been thinking of going a little bigger & stronger for sometime in the future. Because I'm slowly beginning to realize my body does not want me to do most of the work myself, is there a shop that sells a complete eng. that TT members would recommend? The eng. that I want is something with a lot of torque, but not a parts breaker. Thanks for any recommendations.
