Front tire

Did you replace the tire with a rear tire? Looks like tire mileage is around 10,000 but by putting on a rear tire it goes up?

Getting close to the 10 thousand mile mark and starting to think about a new tire on front . In Arkansas this week , lots of twistes . Tires holding the road very well. My ribs are sore from my wife poking me and telling me to slow down. Meeting many people on Trikes that have herd of Trike Talk . I tell all of them they are missing out . You learn so much from everyone here . The lift kit , tire pressures , all this makes it sooooo much more fun! Thanks to all who post their mile of experience here .

I got over 12 thousand miles on my first front tire[Dunlop 11 T/G] So I replaced it with another Stock Dunlop, And so far I have 16 thousand on that, And over 28 thousand on the rear stock tires... So I see no need to experiment with different tires..
With my Two wheelers I was lucky to get 6 thousand out of a set of tires...

I had 21K on my original front tire and I replaced it with the same Dunlop on my 2011 TG. I could have probably gotten a couple more thousand on the tire but was going on a trip from ND to Boise, ID and didn't want to risk the tire going bad somewhere out in western ND or Montana either going out or coming back. You could be looking at 200 miles to the nearest HD out there. Most everyone I know around here with TG's all replace their front tire with the same Dunlop. Two of them have gone 25K on the front before replacing.

Thank you everyone for your help and experience. Here is what I have found out about why the tire and mounting direction.

We have a 14 with 10,000 miles and almost at the wear bar on the front tire. Have been in contact with several people with 14's that have the same mileage and they all have the same wear. Have no idea if it is just the 14's or other years also?

Tread depth is about doubled by going to a rear tire (manufacture does not matter) only dimension that changes is overall diameter and that is only because of the added tread depth. All other dimensions are the same.

As to why the rotation change this is a web site from Avon that explains it very well.

This info helped me understand why, hope it helps someone that had the same questions.

I put the stock Ultra Limited's rear tire on the front in reverse direction. Check Avon's website.

Gary and a lot of us on here have done this and get the best results... There are also at least 2 million threads on here concerning front tires... Look at the archives and you will find a ton of info and experiences to help you make a choice. ;)

I mounted a rear on the front this spring, and have a few thousand miles so far. Mounted it forward. Got all worried about it peeling back, so went out and looked real close, and can see no problem so far. Will continue to monitor. Next tire will go on backwards, due to reading the Avon information, if there is a next time -- I'm pretty old:mad:!

Smitty, just ride backwards.

How old are you? I'm 70 and still have at least another 15 years of riding left. :pepper: :pepper: :D :pepper: :pepper:

Just curious as to what pressures everyone has been running. For the stock front tire on Tri Glides, as I assume this is what most are replying about. My wife's 2011 has 15,000 miles on it now. According to the tire depth gauge I have, it should make it to about 20,000.

I'm pretty anal about tires and pressures. My dad used to preach about tire safety. He built them for Firestone and Bridgestone. But in all honesty I kept the stocker at or near 36 psi most of it's life so far. Now I run it about 2lbs. low, or 34 psi. Seems to have widened the wear pattern to a degree. Maybe I should have done it sooner, but old habits are hard to break I guess.

I know 15,00 ain't a ton of miles for a trike that age but we still work. Last year it was family issues that kept us with fairly low miles. This year I lost my job of 27 years. But we are blessed in a sense too, we managed to work in the Dragon Tail and the Devils Triangle this year instead of Florida 3 or 4 times.

Check out this link to Dunlop tire sizes and tread depths. I'm takin a copy of those numbers to my tire guy tomorrow to see if the 10 mm tire will fit the front of out TG. I wonder if the 6mm is what HD has been sellin us???

Finally got around to changing the front tire. Put on American Elite reversed mounted. Took Trike out today, 100 miles it does seam to steer a little easier than it did when it was new. It does make a difference on the curves for the better.
